Peter got right down to business and it is clear he knows what he is doing. My son is 5 and Peter kept his attention for the full 30 minutes, which is really saying something. At the end of the first lesson, my son was introduced to and could repeat note names; could play a five-note scale; and was learning his right hand from his left. I myself went to Juilliard and Yale for music and am so pleased Peter will be teaching our child(ren).

For eight consecutive years, I performed with many other youth orchestras and served as concert mistress several times. At the age of thirteen, I auditioned for and joined The Venice Symphony during the 2004-2005 season and was a part of their ensemble for seven consecutive seasons, including the position as assistant principal. Hello!,

My classical training began at age 10, when I started to play the viola. From there, I was able to translate my musical skills to violin, guitar, piano, voice, composition, and songwriting.

Originally a biology major at SUNY Purchase College, I quickly became restless knowing that I was unable to focus on music enough. So, I switched it up, followed my passion, and began studying music theory and production. Since then, my life has been focused on teaching, performing, writing, and recording music- and I wouldn't have it any other way!
It's been quite a journey, and I can't wait to share all that I've learned along the way with you.

I usually work with children or teenagers and I can teach someone who has never played an instrument before as well as intermediate players. I use a variety of books that teach theory, rhythm and playing songs such as the Suzuki method, I Can Read Music, the String Builder series and Winning Rhythms by Edward Ayola. For the pieces I focus on a routine to prepare and perform "performance ready" pieces so students gain confidence in their playing and know the level of expectation for what a professional polished piece sounds like.
For complete beginners I focus a lot on the correct positioning because that is the base for playing and it is very hard further down the line to change a bad habit related to positioning.
For more advanced players I focus on the core skills such as intonation and the ability to read notes and rhythms but I also incorporate how to add musicality and flare to a piece so that it is emotional and interesting to listen to.

I am a computer science student and musician at Bryn Mawr College. I have been playing music for 12 years and teaching for 4. At college, I am principal viola of the Bryn Mawr-Haverford Orchestra and I also am part of a chamber music group. In high school, I was in the Maryland All-State Orchestra for four years and was in the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra (MCYO), one of the most prestigious orchestras in Maryland, for four years. During my summers, I attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts high school music program. I have been taught by musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic.
My students improve significantly since when I first meet them. One of my first students whom I now give Skype lessons to successfully got into one of the best orchestras in the DC area and is now principal (1st chair) of
the viola section of that orchestra. I use a comprehensive set of books that teach theory, rhythm and pieces that I use to teach students how to prepare and perform "performance ready" pieces.

About Dimitry
My teaching principles are based on outlining the advantageous mental and physical practice techniques revealed through research in Sports Psychology. These methods help my students strategically overcome the numerous psychological obstacles in order to develop a consistently high level of performance.

Given the current levels of performance excellence and the consequent fierceness of competition, consistency in performance quality is indispensible in attaining the degree of professionalism. This implied link between musical and athletic disciplines is a logical one. Similarly to athletes, musicians must achieve high levels of technical skill, efficient movement patterns, acute focus, composure and extreme concentration, all while maintaining a consistently high level of performance.

Musicians ‘play’ music as athletes ‘play’ sports. Therefore, like sports, a musical performance is a physical activity with extreme demands on technical facility, training ethics, discipline, deliberate practice, structure, dedication, determination, motivation and inspiration. Like sports, it is a form of self-expression, performed in front of an audience and demanding astounding mastery of the human mind and body. Both performance practices provide the performer with opportunities for excellence, though the journey may bring forth intense pressures, challenges, anxieties, fears and psychological phobias. Adapting the methods and principles developed by research in sports psychology, affords tremendous advantage in a musician’s constant desire to elevate, not only the quality, but also the consistency of quality in their performance.
