Each of the guitar lessons I teach is as varied as the students who take them, but their are some general areas that I try to focus on with every student, regardless of ability level.

The first area is technique. Identifying and addressing technical issues in both the right and left hands, and creating a personalized warm-up and practice routine to address those issues, is an important first step for both the brand new and the advanced player.

The second area of importance is music theory, but don't let that scare you off. I only teach enough theory as each student needs to get where they want to go on the guitar, and I take it as slow as I need to make sure that everything is understood clearly. This can be anything from knowing the names of the strings and learning some basic open chords for the beginner, to advanced picking and chord/melody etudes.

The third key area is repertoire. Technique and theory are great, but it's by applying these concepts to music which is ...

About Ian
Hello! My name is Ian, and whether you're young, old, a novice or an aspiring professional, I can't wait to work together to help you hone your craft and achieve your creative goals. I've been singing for as long as I can remember, and playing the guitar since I was 11 years old. I studied music and theatre at Salem State University, where I earned a B.A. in performance in 2004, in addition to having studied guitar privately with a number of teachers over the years. For the last decade+ I've mainly been working in the world of theatre as a freelance pit-musician (guitar, bass and mandolin), music director and occasional actor in and around the greater Boston and Providence areas. Additionally, over the past 5 years I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to work extensively with children and adults with moderate to severe specia
l needs. I first began learning about the subject as a Music Director for children's theatre, then as a one-on-one aid in a specialized classroom for middle school students with severe and profound autism. From there I moved on to a similar but much more intensive position in a private, year-round school designed especially for students whose autism was severe enough to prevent them from attending public school. While working there, I made a connection with the adaptive music program that would come into the school, and now I teach for them during the day, running adaptive music classes for students and adults with autism, as well as adults who have suffered traumatic brain injury.

I love teaching, and I try to make my lessons fun, engaging and personally tailored to help each student achieve their unique goals. I've worked with individuals of all ages, ability levels and walks of life, and I put a real emphasis on developing my students' creativity, not JUST their technique. I love teaching beginners and helping them navigate their way through what can be a very intimidating subject at first, and I also really enjoy the challenge of helping more experienced students as they seek to deepen their ability for self-expression.

Great teacher and nice guy!

I started singing lessons as a complete beginner, although I am in my 30s. Ian was happy to teach me the basics and then we dove right in to something I was interested in learning to sing. He was easy to talk to and encouraging, but willing to point out what I could improve as well. I would recommend him to others.

Awesome teacher!!!

Took a couple singing lessons in the past with a different teacher and I didn't get very far. Ian has a great teaching style and I can already hear a difference in my singing just in the first few weeks of lessons. He is very encouraging, especially for a beginner like me. His constructive criticism is equally helpful. Highly recommended.

In addition to thoroughly addressing all of the issues that initially spurned my desire for vocal lessons, we also examined and exercised other critical areas that he brought to my attention, and laid a strong foundation for singing technique.

Some press:

Phil's compositions showcase a variety of ideas and are quite effective at setting up the soloists to explore the various permutations suggested by his tunes. His compositional originality is matched by his incisive playing which ranges from "inside" lyricism to hard edged, riff based, screaming rock and satisfying surreal textures aided by his intelligent use of electronics."
- David Kane, Cadence Music

"With demonstrative technique, Phil is cognizant of the tradition but thinks outside of the box."

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). Phil's a warmhearted, patient, brilliant teacher and an outstanding and creative musician, seamlessly putting together everything he knows--jazz, shredding, classical--there's no boundaries for him! He's great at explaining things, and he never belittles a question, no matter how dumb you might have thought it was. Phil's a great friend and a great teacher. -John Funkhouser, Berklee College of Music, Boston

In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. He is well versed in so many genres of music, and has such an effortless grasp on improvisation. Any guitarist, from immediate beginners to seasoned professionals, can learn so much from Phil. Learning Guitar can be fun! From beginners to advanced. With almost 30 years of playing and 10+ years of teaching experience, I can help you learn guitar while having fun. Any genre and both acoustic and electric are welcomed.
For beginners, we will start from the basics. Guitar and gear talk. Favorite band and music. Basic chords and notes.
For intermediate, we will talk about simple solos. Basic scales, chords, triads and arpeggios.
For advanced, we will talk about some great solos played by the masters(jazz, rock, blues). Guitar harmony and voice leading.

I really love teaching, sharing my musical knowledge and meeeing new people.

About Steven
Hello!
I am a musician, guitarist and a educator. I have been playing guitar for over 30 years. I have been playing Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk and Gypsy guitar. I have graduated from Berklee College of Music '07. At that time, I've played as an accompanist for the Berklee Vocal Dept. for many years and played shows with various faculties. I have been teaching music since 1999 privately. Also I am a faculty at the Seoul Digital University Music Dept. for 6 years and counting.

Interaction between players are one of the most important elements in music. As a musician, I highly value that. As for my teaching, I love to interact with my students. Hopefully I can let them know how music is wonderful like I did.

I love teaching music. I first picked up my first guitar when I was 13, and haven't put it down since! I've had many different teachers over the years, but the ones that helped me grow the most, were the most patient, understanding, and encouraging. These are the values I bring to the forefront of my practice. I believe making music is something that everyone is able to do, when they find the process and conditions that work for them. It is my job to help you discover those things, and have fun in the process!

The guitar is a miraculous instrument because of its distinctiveness and versatility. It can sing lead, or backup the rhythm section. The direction you choose to pursue on the instrument is entirely unique to your experience and perspective. I've learned to create a wide range of sounds on the guitar from blues and rock to folk and soul, by playing with many different types of musicians over the years. I look forward to helping you learn the patterns and principals of music ...

About Scott
Hello fellow music lover!

My name is Scott, and I'm a musician with 15+ years of performance experience. I've studied performance at Berklee College of Music and performed in various configurations from funk/soul ensembles, to folk-rock bands and I write my own music that I perform as a solo artist.

I love teaching because it allows me to share my love of music and help people grow creatively in the direction of their choice. My feeling is, if you're choosing to invest in your artistic development, it should be an enjoyable experience based around what you're interested in learning about. To that end, all of my lessons are customized to the tastes and preferences of each student. We'll identify the goals you'd like to work towards, the music you want to play and take concrete steps in line with your creative vision.

My areas of e
xpertise include folk, blues, rock, soul, funk and pop music with particular interests in songwriting and improvisation. However, I'm versatile and open minded, so I'm willing to apply my skills to help you learn any style or sound that you are excited about!

Cheers,

Another reason to take lessons with Scott - he's incredibly talented and plays multiple instruments. For example, I wanted to practice playing drums in a "band" setting, so Scott grabbed an electric bass and we started jamming.
