I was the top calculus student in my high school class, and received a 5 on the AP Calculus exam. I also won the high school medal for top math student in my high school.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, I graduated from Cornell University in Electrical & Computer Engineering, with a minor in Music. While in college, I was President of the Cornell Piano Society.
I went on to work for Intel & Apple as an engineer, while continuing to teach and tutor on the side. Later on, I founded my own startup company centered around Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, and unmet needs in the B2C market.

I've been teaching calculus for twenty years and my students have gone from no knowledge at all to grasp the basic. Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to solve simple problem about derivatives and as time goes on you'll be able to solve types of integrals of elementary functions. I am an MIT tutor specializing in math and science, and I have taught math anywhere between pre-algebra and calculus (including algebra) for 5 years. I have taken AP Calculus BC while in high school, and I have taken Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations at MIT, and I actively participated in many math competitions through elementary, middle, and high schools.
Before the lessons, I like to talk with parents, students, and/or teachers to fully gauge what they have been struggling with and how to best help them. Then I identify the student's gap in knowledge while helping them complete their homework and give them additional drilling problems as needed to help them fully master the materials and do well on their tests. I always carry around AP Calculus prep books or college calculus practice problems (depending on the students' levels) so that the students can practice these problems as needed. I also provide them with additional resources and practice problems as needed.

I believe in in-depth learning. In-depth learning helps my student build the foundation necessary to succeed in their future courses. To facilitate this type of learning, many of my lessons feature derivation of formulas. For the lessons that do not involve formulas, I present a few simple concepts from which we can derive and solve many other problems. My lessons also feature numerous questions to enhance student engagement and to improve student confidence of having them solve the problem on their own as much as possible. I then drill my students with practice problems and get them to explain until I'm fully convinced that my students truly understood the material.
Though I specialize in gifted students, I also have worked with students from all kinds of background. Most of my students are either high school or college students, but I also worked with younger students. I also helped some students implement organizational tips and develop study skills necessary to succeed in their future classes. My students are from all over the world--China, France, Korea, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, Vietnam, and United States. To this day, my closest friends are still the international students. English is my second language as well, and I certainly empathize with students who struggle with the English language.

Matt is a rare gem in the tutoring world. He has an amazing style of teaching. He really goes in depth. My 11th grader son has a lot of respect for him. According to my son, "Matt is a genius". Calculus is a new realm of math and thinking and it opens up the entire universe! I have taken Calculus 1 & 2 & 3, Differential Equations, Real Analysis 1 & 2, and Complex Analysis. I have also used Calculus 3 in my graduate work.
I love tutoring and my approach is three-fold. First, I help each person learn how to become more successful and independent lifelong learners. Second, each tutee should complete their assignments as much as possible before each session so we can identify and focus on specific trouble spots. Third, I work within the framework and scope of their primary mathematics teacher to supplement and augment what is happening in the classroom.
I have experience as a nationally certified tutor, tutoring in high school and college, as well as volunteer tutoring of the GED math tests. I also teach university math remediation classes (AKA developmental education) as well as classes to bypass remediation by preparing for the Accuplacer/Compass admission tests.
I am familiar and comfortable with current technology (graphing calculators, computer algebra systems, computers, mathematics programming) as well distance learning (online homework and testing and MyMathLab, WebAssign, Khan Academy, Skype, etc.).
In addition to tutoring online I enjoy working in person with each student. Meeting at local public libraries is ideal as some branches have reservable private and safe study rooms with white boards.
For each appointment the tutee needs to bring all their materials, text book, class notes, completed homework (as much as possible), specific questions for me, and any completed instructions from our previous session. If online homework is used in class then please bring a laptop. If you don't have one, there are often Chromebooks available for checkout at the library. One hour appoints are preferred because they allow more time for specific learning and growth.
Additionally, I can supplement or substitute regular homework with specific and tailored lesson plans.
Shortly after each session, I will report our progress and my obervations, including instructions for follow up.

I have been taught Calculus 1 and 2 both by highschool AND college teachers, getting straight A’s all 4 times. I can help students struggling with any topic to help them do better in the course and even catch them up if they are behind. I also have experience in tutoring so I’m positive I can help anyone achieve their goal!
After all this time of learning and using calculus I have reached a benchmark in my life and believe that I am knowledgeable enough in the topic to tutor others the way I would have liked to be taught as a student.
