Whether you're 3 or 103, if you're playing viola (or starting to play!) I hope you're EXCITED about it!! Over the years, my students have said that their lessons are/have been their favorite times of each week. I believe learning to play viola should be full of joy, learning, thinking, and feeling. Bring that joy alive for yourself by partnering with me as your musical guide. I bring over 30 years of experience and pure joy to my work, and I'd love to share that with you!

Viola:
A stringed instrument that is bowed or played with varying techniques. It is slightly larger than a violin and has a lower and deeper sound. Since the 18th century it has been the middle or alto voice of the violin family, between the violin (which is tuned a perfect fifth above) and the cello (which is tuned an octave below. The strings from low to high are generally tuned to C3, G3, D4, and A4. My lessons always start out with the basics! We start out by learning notes by plucking the strings and then the bow is soon incorporated. The goal is to eventually learn all the notes on the fretboard and also learning how to read and play chords. As the student progresses advanced techniques are introduced, music theory and learning how to solo.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

Viola lessons are geared toward student goals: better orchestra seating, youth orchestra auditions, coaching for chamber ensemble performances, college auditions, or simply to master the instrument. I'm fun and engaging, and make the lessons informative without being overly taxing.

My name is Max Simon and I would love to teach you viola. I have played viola since I was a child and I have a bachelor's degree in bass performance. I did not go to school for viola but I have had ample experience with string instruments from the entire family. I had taken lessons as a child on the instrument and I know the technique well. Thanks for reading my profile and I wish you success with your studies!

Max was very helpful as a teacher. He gave me a lot of good insight into picking the bass for bluegrass music. I've been primarily playing bowed music. I plan to continue my lessons with him.

"My 12 year-old daugher has been practicing viola with Jill for 7 months now. From day 1, I have been impressed by Jill's teaching style that is rigorous, but also flexible and supportive. In just a few lessons, my daughter's music playing deepened. The most important to me was to see and hear my daughter starts to breath, feel and enjoy her music. I believe that now my daughter is not playing for me but more for herself. I am extremely thankful to Jill and recommend her highly as a violin and viola instructor. I believe her instruction will have a lifelong impact on my daughter. On top of things, my daughter and I enjoy our time during her lessons very much."
