When inking your cartoon you will slip and make a mistake.  No problem.  You can cover up this mistakes using an opaque white paint using a brush.  See how easy it is to make corrections. 

Cartooning

I always liked drawing as far as I can remember.  I took up doodling while earning my engineering degree in college.  After graduation,  I started my career at Ford Motor Co. but I never gave up my interest in cartooning.  I found a syndicated cartoonist ,Ken Muse who was teaching at a Macomb Community College in Warren Michigan.  I studied with him for many years and started getting published in magazines and local commercial ads.  I was featured in his book, “ The Total Cartoonist” as one of 16 professional cartoonist.  I published my own book , “ Secular Humorism” in 1987. 
I have always found ways to include cartoons in my work and presentations.  I look forward in sharing what I learned from the old masters to new students.

I’ve been painting with oils for three decades, and drawing for as long as I can remember. I’ve been a full time fine artist for over a decade now, and have been doing guest demos, private and group lessons for many years, for various subject matter and age groups. 

After graduating from Tyler School of Art at Temple University with a major in Painting, I had jobs making signs by hand, doing T-shirt designs, and in a graphic design studio with clients like M&M Mars, and Revlon. As a freelance artist, I did logos, movie poster illustration, album art and packaging design. I even scored and created sound effects for some short films! Yes, I play keyboard as well.

I’ve worked in many different mediums, but painting with oils and drawing are my preferred mediums. I teach painting in oils, as this is my forte, but I am not the best fit for students that are interested only in acrylics. I’ve painted and drawn many different kinds of subjects, but the figure is my favorite. I've worked from photo reference and from life (something right in front of me) as well as from my imagination; the range of styles that I have used have gone from photorealism all the way to cartoons. I am also proficient in Photoshop, which I often use to edit the reference for my paintings. My work has been displayed in many shows across the country, and has sold internationally.

There are all kinds of different ways to approach drawing or painting the same thing. You should use the techniques that feel most natural and work best for you. I will customize your lesson to the subject, medium and speed that you prefer, so that as long as you've got the necessary fundamentals taken care of, you can make strides in whatever area you want. I have been teaching since 2006 on a variety of topics.  I graduated with an BA from the University of Wisconsin.  My degree is in History with and emphasis on East Asian history.

I've taught all age groups from age 2 up to retirees.  My teaching experience includes one-on-one and group classes in a variety of settings.  I've taught corporate classes, private lessons, small groups, and traditional classroom lessons.

We have a student-centric philosophy of learning. Lessons are generally relaxed and designed to work towards accomplishing student determined goals. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. Special focus on topics like music theory, self-accompaniment, composition, song writing, and home recording are available as well. 

What are your personal goals? We'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. 

Lessons with small children are more focused on just having fun while developing a good musical foundation, but we prefer for them to have as much personal ownership of their lesson as possible.

My son has really enjoyed learning calligraphy from Joey - Joey explained things clearly and moved the lesson at an appropriate pace. He's an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher.

Emily is an excellent animation tutor. My 10-year old daughter really enjoys working with her. Emily has been extremely professional and helpful to us as we worked to get the right technical setup for her lessons. I've created many cartoons in the context of illustration, comics and 2D animation. My specialty is in expressions, character designs and story-telling. 

My mission is to spread this knowledge of cartooning and to help achieve the goals of students.

I specialize in drawing/illustration, digital painting, and 2D hand-drawn frame-by-frame digital animation, mostly in the context of video games (with 2D graphics). Many of my drawing/animation students have been interested in drawing/animating human figures and animals, including furry/anthro characters. I've helped students complete tiny looping animations, creating memes as well as short films. Each student can work on whatever they're interested during my classes, whether they want to draw their favorite cartoon character from reference or animate their own original character to their favorite animation meme. 

I've been working professionally as an artist since 2009, making graphics and illustrations for clients and having worked for Disney Research for just over a year. I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor's in Fine Arts in 2012.

My hope and mission is to successfully distribute my knowledge, skills and experience to anyone who wants to acquire them.

I'm capable of a large range of improvements, from goals as hobbyists to more professional goals. I have successfully helped students get admitted into their desired art schools through portfolio preparation, as well as helped artists get their first gigs as freelancers. I can serve as a mentor for an artist's early years as a contractor. 

Lessons are taught through video calls where I always share my screen to clearly show my demonstrations in real time. Students may also share their screens if they are working digitally. If students work on paper or through a tablet like an iPad, they may take phone pics or screenshots and message/email them to me during class, or hold up their work on the webcam if it's high enough quality. For animation classes, students should use a laptop or desktop so that they can share their screens. This is the best way for me to view students' animations in real time.
