Frankie helped me with my clarinet tone within the first 15 minutes of the first lesson, and gave me many more helpful playing tips throughout the hour. He was really interested in what my goals were. Looking forward to many more lessons with Frankie.

Banjo:
If country picking, blue grass, or even pop/rock is a favorite of yours then banjo is a really fun instrument to learn. As with all instruments I teach, we would start with basics and in no time the be picking and strumming away on songs you love. I also incorporate learning the notes, chords, theory, and picking, strumming, techniques and rhythms to become a well rounded musician.

I thought I wanted to take viola lessons. Then I read her website and I realized that she might be able to help me get my voice back! I thought there was no hope ever. She has been extremely generous with her time, and I haven't seen her yet, but I'm not buying the viola I was planning on buying. I play cello, and piano still, but I am going to see if she can help me with my voice. She sounds incredible. I never dreamed that I could even have HOPE like this!

From the rank basics to traditional tunes, to timing and tone, technique and theory, I can show you what you need to make your journey easier. Rely on my 15 years of music teaching experience to save you countless hours of bewilderment and frustration!

My journey as a musician which began at the age of 8 has now carried me to 48 states and a dozen countries, including 4 tours in continental Europe. I spent 7+ years performing, recording, and giving workshops with talented acoustic acts based in Nashville and the southeast. I am lucky to have been involved and contributed to a handful of IBMA and Grammy-nominated albums.

Increasingly, however, I turn my focus toward private teaching.
I find great joy and pride in helping a student reach their goals and surprise themselves with their own potential.

I am greatly encouraged by my progress. Except for the limitations of my hands, I want to continue with Bryan. Many thanks. Until January, have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Blessed Christmas.

Bryan elevated my guitar playing in just a few short lessons to a level I never even thought I would reach. His lessons are very relaxed and he works on what you want to focus on.

If there is a specific song you want to learn, beginner, intermediate, or advanced, Bryan has a version for you. He is an awesome teacher, a great guy, and an outstanding guitar player. Booking that first lesson with him was the best thing I could have ever done for my guitar playing.

I teach old-time clawhammer banjo in the festival style, with an emphasis on backing up fiddle tunes.

I founded and played banjo for the first two records by Ragged Mountain String Band, and was awarded 5th place in the banjo competition at the Highland County Fiddler's Convention in Monterrey, Virginia. My approach to the instrument is an attempt at synthesizing Round Peak, African-American, and Festival styles.

About Dan

I've been playing music since I was five years old (so, over 35 years now), beginning my 'stage career' as a saxophonist in school bands, then playing guitars, keyboards, accordions, mandolins, banjo, and bass in a variety of live acts throughout my adult life. I've made (as of January 2020) 16

My first lesson with Zach was great! 5 stars. He asked the right questions as to what aI am looking to do. And we quickly came up with a lesson plan that with the right amount of work in my part will get me headed in the right direction. Zach does a great job of making his students feel comfortable and good about their abilities.

"Mark is an exceptional teacher. I have been taking banjo lessons with Mark, both bluegrass style and clawhammer. He is able to teach well so many other string instruments like ukelele, mandolin and guitar. His wide knowledge base allows him to help you with any instrument or situation. He is very patient, observant and detail oriented. I like that he is able to assess my issues quickly and provide good feedback. He builds confidence in you. The best thing that you can hear from Mark is "for you the best way to approach this...". His lessons are really tuned to you as an individual with the best plan and strategy that will work for you and your weaknesses and strengths. You end up doing things that you thought were too difficult for you just a week before. He's great!"

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
