John is a committed and passionate instructor who is willing to go the extra mile for his students (and their parents). I approached John to help bring the spark and joy for Trumpet back for my 13 yo son and boy has he delivered! He is patient, supportive and understanding but at the same time creative, consistent and persistent to help my son continue to excel. He finds what is relevant so that the student remains interested and engaged. I am so pleased we have found him and would recommend him 100% to anyone looking for a music teacher.

Trumpet:
A trumpet is a musical instrument commonly used in classical and jazz ensembles. The trumpet group contains the instruments with the highest register in the brass family. They are played by blowing air through almost-closed lips (called the player's embouchure), producing a "buzzing" sound that starts a standing wave vibration in the air column inside the instrument. I begin teaching from the beginning with the very basics of breathing, embouchure, fingerings, reading, notes, rhythms, songs, scales, theory and improvisation.

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

I enjoy nurturing musical creativity in my
students.

It is Rapturous for me when a student realizes
their own musicality by going past just
playing the notes on the page, to actively
expressing the Message (which could be a
Thought, Emotion, or a Scene) that is
inherent in the piece.

In a Brass instrument lesson, I have the student play:
-A quick and effective warm-up with me.
-A quick review of their assigned
technical exercises.
-Their assigned Etude or Chart or Solo.
-A Duet with Me.

Technical aspects of Performance:
1. A mastery of ability to Sight Sing.
2. Clean Articulation.
3. A wide (and well-sounding) Range.
4. Moving between partials is Flexible.
5. A beautiful Tone.

I wish for my students to become more than
just good instrumentalists, I want for them
to always have fun with music. When a
student realizes that music can ultimately be
Emotional and Creative Outlet for them,
they will be Musicians for life!

Mr. Scott really is a nice person to meet. For my first voice lessons, He helped me identify what range I was comfortable with and introduced a few of his works that opened my perspective on reading music. He knows how to teach his material if you specify what exactly you want to accomplish.
Mike
Scott is someone who expertly emphasizes both the fundamentals of trombone playing and musicianship. I have had the opportunity to read his melodious etudes arrangements with him and his arrangements are expertly crafted to force the performers to work on listening, phrasing, intonation and sound quality all in one fell swoop. Scott's attitude is very warm and not condescending in the slightest. He is very positive while always encouraging the player to grow. If you are a low brass player who wants a deeper understanding on the intricacies of low brass performance and overall musicianship, you should absolutely give Scott a try.

He is so knowledgable not only in Jazz, but all other genres of music as well. Dave won't just make you a better trumpet player by focusing on technique and learning the instrument, but he'll also make you a better musician overall with his well rounded approach to music and theory. He is also just a super awesome guy and easy to get along with and feel comfortable around. Definitely recommend for any ages or skill levels!"

"Hunter taught me beginner trumpet and he's no doubt one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is very rigorous without being intimidating and puts great emphasis on encouragement so that you feel motivated to practice and get better for the next lesson. You can tell he's a very disciplined musician himself and the atmosphere of the lesson is always relaxed. You know you can ask him any question you may have as many times as necessary. Without ever neglecting technique, he had me trying tunes from the very begining so that I could see how technical exercises immediately transfer to making enjoyable music. He has many different tools to tackle a specific blockage you may have in the learning process."
