I am interested in helping students struggling with math from basic algebra to calculus. When I was a computer science student, I took about 10 math classes; Calculus I, II, and III, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math I and II, Discrete Probability, Statistics and Continuous Probability, and Numeric Method on Digital Computing. I got good grades for all these classes. I enjoyed solving problems in math and often found myself taking the challenges of solving extra credit problems. It would be a very rewarding experience if I am able to share the process of solving math problems with others and help them improve their abilities to solve problems on their own.

I was born and raised in S. Korea. I studied piano performance at Cleveland Institute of Music and University of Iowa and hold DMA in piano performance and pedagogy from University of Iowa. Other than music I hold BS in Computer Science from State University of New York, Albany. I began to play the piano when I was six and won prizes from the local competitions sponsored by Daegu Board of Education and Dague Division of Korean Musicians Association. I performed in major cities in Korea, the US and Europe such as Seoul, Paris, Vienna, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I participated in The Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition during my last year at University of Iowa and was mentioned by the judges as a technically very good pianist. For additional studies I participated in Aspen Music School and Music Festival, Claude Elffere's Master
Class (Paris, France), Mozarteum Summer School and Music Festival (Salzburg, Austria) and Vienna Music Seminar (Vienna, Austria). I was awarded scholarship when I attended Cleveland Inctitute of Music and Aspen Music School. My teachers include Jinsook Kim, Donald Walker, Paul Schenly, Gabriel Chodos, Viktor Teuflmayr, Claude Elffere, Anne Epperson, and Vivian Hornik Weilestein.
Previously I was a rehearsal pianist of operas, II pagliacci by Leoncavallo with Daegu Opera, Snatched by the Gods and Broken Strings by Param Vir with University of Iowa Theatre department, and contemporary operas based on the works by Francesca Cavalli with Temple University Opera. Other than operas I worked with Missoula Children’s Theatre for the performance of Aladdin. As a collaborative pianist I performed in numerous concerts and performed in master classes of Joseph Silverstein, Steven Isserlis, Julliard Quartet, Isaac Stern and Richard Stoltzman. I have been teaching piano at the university settings (University of Iowa and Catholic University of Daegu) or privately for 10+ years. Recently I taught at Half Note Music School in Bellevue, WA and was a pianist at St. Columba's Episcopal Church and United Christian Church in Renton, WA.

I view algebra like a game: there are simple rules that govern what you can do, and if you know and understand the rules, the game is a whole lot easier. The same thing can be said for algebra. If algebra seems to be a struggle for a student, I can help them identify the basic concepts (i.e. rules) on which they need to strengthen their understanding. Algebra is an essential tool I use to solve a myriad of problems every day as an engineer, and so I am intimately familiar with its many different topics, and perhaps because I understand its value, I genuinely enjoy teaching algebra to others.

I remember what it was like to personally struggle with algebra, and I know the most common pitfalls which make it seem more difficult than it actually is. I am a UC Berkeley biomedical engineering graduate, and as such, both math and science are a significant part of my daily life. However, I believe that it is my genuine passion for STEM that makes me a good teacher of math and science.

As a tutor, my goal is not to impress students with how much I know. Rather, my goal is to impress my students by showing them how easily math and science concepts can come to them when they are presented the material in a straightforward way. The late physicist, Richard Feynman, posited that the ability to explain complicated ideas in a simple manner is the true mark of understanding. I agree with this assertion, and I make it my goal each tutoring session to explain even the most complex phenomena in a simple way, so that my student will come away from the lesson invariably understanding it. Additionally, I emphasize a strong understanding of the fundamentals, because both math and science are heavily inductive disciplines; many of the theorems and laws are founded on other, more fundamental principles. I have personally experienced the discouragement of trying to learn material that is beyond my foundation level, and so I can empathize with students who are in that boat. Fortunately, I have learned that the remedy is always a return to, and a strengthening of the basics. That is the approach I take with students who find themselves struggling in a course.

My online teaching platform is a “black board” drawing program that my students can follow along with as I explain concepts and solve problems. I simply share my screen with them during the session, and at the end, I take a screenshot of the notes and email it to my students for their reference. Colin is absolutely amazing teacher!
Last time I studied math was 20+ years. I am 40 years old and about to finish my second degree CRJ, and like many others I left math class at the end. Taking the math prep test (which I failed) placed me almost in kindergarten..Lol! and I knew I needed help to re-learn math. I am so happy Colin answered my request (I sent 15 requests, and only 2 teachers answered). I wanted to start eating the study guide provided by CSN and just focus on the topics, but Colin wanted to show me the "why we have numbers, type of numbers, etc" definitely I wanted to fly before I could walk, and I am so grateful he had a different plan............because IT MAKE SENSE!
I mentioned I prefered to have a lobotomy (siks!) instead of facing math in my 40's because I never had a chance to understand math, I just digested the fact I was going to fail and obtain an "s" for grade. I am looking forward to like, learn, and comprehend math with Colin's help so I can graduate in December 2018.

I've worked with Palig for several months now as part of Boston Junior Derby. She has been teaching our very introductory roller skating course.

Awful. I had 33 questions and she only helped me with 2. She kept saying that if you solved it and you got that answer then maybe it be fineasier. I was the only one who was talking as if I were the tutor.

I believe in in-depth learning. In-depth learning helps my student build the foundation necessary to succeed in their future courses. To facilitate this type of learning, many of my lessons feature derivation of formulas. For the lessons that do not involve formulas, I present a few simple concepts from which we can derive and solve many other problems. My lessons also feature numerous questions to enhance student engagement and to improve student confidence of having them solve the problem on their own as much as possible. I then drill my students with practice problems and get them to explain until I'm fully convinced that my students truly understood the material.

Though I specialize in gifted students, I also have worked with students from all kinds of background. Most of my students are either high school or college students, but I also worked with younger students. I also helped some students implement organizational tips and develop study skills necessary to succeed in their future classes. Math has always been a passion of mine. This passion has led to a very important lesson: every math class is very dependent on the last one. Making sure you have a firm grasp on the subject at every step is extremely important. Algebra is no exception, without a firm understanding of algebra it will be almost impossible to advance in the math field. I have been tutoring math since high school and it has become very obvious to me that a good tutor is key to understanding algebra inside and out.

I am a graduate of Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and an emphasis on secondary education. My student teaching was with middle schoolers and I've always enjoyed working with adult learners. While there is something fantastic about every student, I think I am a uniquely perfect fit for the student that is math-phobic or even hates math.

Math did not always come easily for me and I vividly remember being extremely frustrated, especially in high school. One teacher in college, though, had a different presentation style, and everything started to click. I have 8 years of experience as a tutor, including a gap year running an after-school tutoring program for at risk youth. I'm a firm believer that, despite what many students believe, almost no one is "bad at math." As a consequence, a major component of my job as a tutor is to help students develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed in any math class. 3) Love of Learning – This is perhaps the most important element to me. My favorite teachers were not the ones who managed to cram the most amount of information in my head, but those who helped me be excited about the subjects they taught. As a tutor, I work with students to develop excitement about the subject matter and a love of learning more generally.

Finally, here’s a bit more information about me. Currently, I'm a public health researcher at a large non-profit, and specialize in systematic reviews and project evaluation. I studied Sociology and Public Policy at UNC Chapel Hill. I graduated summa cum laude and received a Chancellor's award for excellence in my field of study. Josh was a very patient and a hands on tutor. He took time to get to know each student in order to better assist them personally. He had good boundaries with the students and was able to stay professional while being able to have fun with them. We saw personal gains based on the VA SOL test scores at the end of the school year after his assistance.
