French Horn lessons for the dedicated student that wants to excel in music.

About Ben

I first heard a French Horn long before I saw one and knew it was what I wanted to do with my life. I'll admit when I finally saw one I was a little disappointed. I'd hoped it would 'point outwardly', and look 'cool' like a trumpet or trombone. Nevertheless I took up horn and played throughout my school days in band, orchestra, various youth orchestras, and the honors groups in my area. I attended Shenandoah University, where I branched out and learned to apply Horn to contemporary music, musicals, pop, rock, jazz, and many other styles. Currently I perform in and around Philadelphia with
a variety of groups, and in various settings. Lately, you can see me perform with the Philadelphia Wind Symphony, the Patriot Brass, and Beta Test (an ensemble that performs video game and sci fi music).

And each lesson plan will be a living slate to work towards these goals.

Mic's, Mixing boards, stands, music, and repair materials. I have everything a working music professional needs, and everything needed to ensure a stellar result from any lessons spent together.

Outstanding horn teacher!

Ben is an outstanding horn teacher. He is eager to help me improve my horn playing, and he teaches me something new in every lesson. He cares very much about my progress, and he gives me exercises to improve my technique. Ben is very patient and kind. I highly recommend Ben as a horn teacher.

Parent comment: Coming from NJ, I find Ben's studio easy to access & I appreciate the ample, free parking directly outside his door. I also give Ben my highest recommendation.

Allison P.

Morrisville, PA

My primary instrument, I have been teaching French horn since 2006. I have been playing French horn for nearly 15 years.

About Allison

I received my BA in Music Education from Rowan University in 2008, and my MM in Music Therapy from the University of Miami in 2013. Since 2006, I have provided piano, French horn, and beginning guitar lessons to children and adults. Additionally, I have been providing adapted lessons to individuals with and without disabilities, including ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder, for nearly 5 years.

*** Lesson Details ***
Learning to play music is like learning to read a book. It takes time, patience, and practice. My main goal is for students to be excited about music. Therefore, I try to pr
ovide fun, mind stimulating experiences during lessons, while setting high educational goals and maintaining clear expectations.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should have their own instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in working with individuals with disabilities.
In addition to music lessons and adapted music lessons, I provide MUSIC THERAPY sessions to individuals with emotional, social, cognitive, neurological, physical, and behavioral impairments.

***Background Check***
In case you are wondering, I have not renewed my background check because my after-school schedule is full and I am not looking for young students due to limited availability during the hours 3pm-8pm. I am looking for adult students who can meet for lessons during the morning or early afternoon hours. TakeLessons does not require a background check for individuals 18 years or older.

Dan W.

Philadelphia, PA

My goal for students is for them to obtain an appreciation, a love, and an understanding of not only the horn, but of music in general, and to develop problem solving and analytical skills that can help them in all aspects of life, from sports, to academics, to psychology, to health.

I have been teaching private horn lessons and performing professionally for more than 15 years. Students of mine consistently place high in region and all state auditions, and have gone on to study at major music schools across the US and Europe.

About Dan

* Principal Horn - Pennsylvania Ballet (Philadelphia)
* Principal Horn - Chamber Orchestra of New York
* Recordings for NASCAR, Sony Classical, and Naxos Records
* Active Clinician, Chamber Musician, Orchestral Musician, and Soloist
* Performances with Dave Brubeck, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, John Legend, Gloria Estefan, Carlos Santana, Mannheim Steamroller, Patti Lupone, Leann Rhimes, Josh Groban...

I have a Bachelor Degree in Horn Performance, with outside studies in Piano and Composition from Indiana University. I have been performing professionally for 20 years, and privately
teaching and coaching for 12 years. Experience includes:

* Faculty Westminster Choir College - 2003-2006
* Faculty Summertrios festival - 2002-Present
* Coach and clinician at Rutgers University, University of Central Arkansas, Kutztown University, Eastern Michigan University

My approach to teaching is based largely on students' goals. While I do work with a variety of ages/levels, step 1 is always ensuring a proper foundation of the basics. Additionally, I am well versed in Nutrition, Fitness, and establishing a healthy mindset. Integrating this with a focus on body awareness and problem solving aids students in developing a highly efficient and analytical strategy for horn, sports, academics, and life in general.

*** Lesson Details ***
The first 3 lessons with any student is a trial period. By the end of the third lesson, I encourage the student to assess whether or not they have learned something, and whether or not they feel comfortable with me as their teacher. During this trial period, I will be assessing how motivated the student is to reach his or her goals on the instrument, how attentive and responsive they are during lessons, and how well they prepare the work they have been assigned each week. Once fully accepted into the studio, the following expectations are in place:

- Students should arrive at the lesson on time, warmed up (when possible), and ready to play.

- Students will be responsible for purchasing their music and bringing it to the lesson.

- Students are expected to practice no less than 3 days per week. This is the bare minimum. Specific amount of time per practice session may vary anywhere between 15 minutes and 3 hours, depending on level, material, and specific goals.

- I am to be made aware of any life or health issues that may interfere or affect the performance of the student.

- In addition to their instrument and all appropriate music, students should bring the following with them to each lesson:

pencil, metronome (or smartphone metronome app), a notebook of manuscript paper (their lesson book), a stand mirror (only if specifically requested)

Adam L.

I like to gear my lessons towards the individual student's strengths and weaknesses. I focus on the basic of good tone production and sound while also understanding the value of good technique. I'm flexible and can teach the basics of horn playing as well as work with developing players of all skill levels. I take a lot of pride in the growth of my students and will work with you as much as you need to help you become the best possible player.

About Adam

My name is Adam and I am a recent graduate from the University of Connecticut where I studied Horn. I have recently moved to Allentown PA to work with Youth Education in the Arts and am looking to start giving private lessons to music students in the Lehigh Valley Area. I have played with the UCONN Symphony Orchestra as well as the Wind Ensemble and my time with these ensembles has given me the opportunity to play in halls such as Carnegie Hall in NY as well as Mechanics Hall in MA. I have played in a number of world premiers with the University of Connecticut Wind Ensemble and have premiered
pieces for the Sackler Composition Contest. I am comfortable teaching classical horn repertoire, basic brass techniques, and other musical styles.
