I was very blessed to be on of Tom's students for a few years, working along side him in his shop. I was the untraditional student, an apprentice in a world where such students have become lost. Already a seasoned musician, that didn't mean there wasn't room for me to learn from Thomas. He helped teach me how to play his folk harps, as well as make them and repair them. I learned a great deal of folk traditions, and with his help, stepped outside of my classically trained box. Not to mention, his guidance and support actually gave me the confidence to become a performer, well paid at that. He encouraged me in ways most of my musical teachers failed me...all the more reason to praise his abilities because he was able to help me make many breakthroughs despite many bad teachers over the years. My college education was actually in education, and so, i can proudly say, he was also the most excellent teacher in teaching me how to teach. I was able to witness many of his lessons. Thomas is full of patience, love of music, and enthusiasm...all of which foster any student, no matter what the age or curriculum, to do his or her best. The years I spent with Tom will always be years i remember as extreme growth and fond memories.

Tom McShane has exposed me to a lot of great folk music from a variety of cultures and time periods. He gets you into playing songs right away. This preserves the joy of making music and gives you a sense of accomplishment . I'd taken instrument lessons in the past where the instructor would get all bogged down in technique and I'd never get to play any music, which destroyed my natural joy and motivation. Now I'm regaining it back, so for that I am very grateful.

Alison S.

Louisville, KY

Violin and viola are similar, in fact, I play both not only for students and lessons, but professionally as well. Although, violin was not my first instrument, the principles and fundamentals are so similar to the viola - in fact, you'll learn that you can someday transition between the instruments yourself if you'd like!

The first lessons usually are spent learning about the fundamentals - it's a lot to take in at first, but it will start making more and more sense as we start to apply those basic principals. I'm not a strict teacher; I'd rather my students enjoy the learning process and have fun with their instrument. I teach every student a little differently based on their age, previous knowledge, goals, learning style, and personality. I encourage my students to practice thoughtfully - I value quality practice time verses just lots of mindless playing. I have a very thoughtful approach to my teaching style - and I'm always learning and reevaluating how I teach based on ...

About Alison

I'm passionate about music and love sharing that through performance and teaching. I received my degree in viola performance from the University of Louisville School of Music in May 2010. I studied under Chien-Ju Liao along with many other great violists in the Louisville community. I've also had the pleasure of playing with many quartets, chamber ensembles and orchestras including Louisville Youth Orchestra, All-State, the UofL Symphony, and the Louisville Orchestra. Some of my greatest moments involve playing in Carnegie Hall and premiering a world-class ballet performance with the UofL Symp
hony Orchestra. Music has been a part of my life since I was little and I can't imagine life without it. Along with viola, I also study, play and teach piano and violin.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm not a really strict teacher but I do encourage my students to push themselves and really make the most of their practice time, especially if they have busy schedules. I believe in customizing my teaching style to my student's needs and desires. I give positive feedback, while never sacrificing constructive feedback.

After 3 months with a beginning Viola, Violin, or Piano student, I expect you to be able to read the notes (without having to write them all in), understand basic rhythms, have learned how to play a scale (or more), and have completed a few of songs.

After 6 months, I expect that my students will have relative ease with reading their music, playing with hands together on piano, and starting to master basic bowing techniques and coordination on Violin and Viola.

Learning an instrument is difficult, but so rewarding, and with the right teacher, can be a wonderful experience. I want my students to have that wonderful experience, I am encouraging, enthusiastic and I make my teaching style as comprehensive and interesting as possible!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room, grand piano, room for parents to wait on a couch or chair, music stand, metronome

*** Travel Equipment ***
music, instrument, shoulder rest and rosin (violin and viola)

*** Specialties ***
I mainly focus on classical. As I teach, I incorporate music theory so that my students may have a better understanding of how the music is structured. I also teach popular music for my students that what to learn some music from their favorite bands!

Playing the piano is fun.

The first lessons Alison coached me on the fundamentals of piano playing, but also spent a good time listening to me play. The following lessons she added a songbook, delved deeper into the core course book, and added Beethoven (which I love). In short she had adapted our lessons to her evaluation of my ability and my feedback to build a course trajectory that would keep the lessons engaging, challenging, but fun.

Overall she is a great instructor and you feel no pressure playing in front of her.

Lauren S.

Louisville, KY

Music should never simply be a rote-learning process. We develop real artistry. My students learn how to interpret, transform, and create music. From the first lesson, we experiment with various musical "ingredients" and revisit these tools often as we move through a lesson series or repertoire. Students explore a variety of styles and learn to read, compose, and improvise. Students as young as five have created their own theme and variations on a favorite tune with these techniques.

About Lauren

Hello! My name is Lauren, and I am excited to bring out the musician in you!

Whether you're searching for yourself or your child, I would love to invite you to my beautiful creative space and help you meet your musical goals.

I focus on developing true artistry with my students and giving them the fundamental tools to be able to play and write various styles of music including classical, musical theater, folk, contemporary, Christian, and more.

From the first lesson, we engage with the instrument and explore its sound potential right away and learn other concepts such as music theor
y, literacy, and technique in subsequent lessons.

Please send me a note! I can't wait to get started.

Students can expect to be both challenged and inspired in lessons. I believe that learning and playing the Violin should be fun, but also taken seriously if you're actually paying money to learn. Students will be pushed to their highest potential and will leave with the motivation to learn more and become a better violinist.
Usual schedule

We will discuss the piece and how it was played (etc)

Hannah J.

Shelbyville, KY

Experienced violin teacher of over 10 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn the music they want to learn while also building a strong foundation of classical violin and music theory skills.

About Hannah

I have been playing violin for 24 years and teaching for 10. I have performed for weddings and special occasions around the Louisville, Lexington, and Southern Indiana areas. My husband and I live in Shelbyville and are expecting a daughter in November. I teach at my home and at a church in Louisville. My schedule will be changing after my baby is born and I will be more flexible.

I use the Suzuki method of playing for my beginner students but also try to incorporate any music genres that the individual student enjoys. My goal is to not only advance the student in violin technique and musi
c theory but also instill a love of the instrument and art in general. I studied for many years with a Julliard graduate and have a minor degree in music from Judson College.
