Ukulele Lessons in Los Angeles

Devin K. - Los Angeles Ukulele Teacher

My name is Devin K., and I teach ukulele lessons in Los Angeles. I am always thrilled when a student decides to take up ukulele, as it is one of my favorite instruments, and I find it to be delightfully accessible to all kinds of people. Los Angeles has a wealth of resources for those hoping to begin playing or hone existing skills on the ukulele. Below are some of the wonderful events that happen here, which students can seek out to better their knowledge of this fun little instrument.

1) The Los Angeles International Ukulele Festival is a great place to watch some beautiful performances by expert ukulele players. Watching ukulele performance is a great way to get an idea of the range of this instrument. There are also several great workshops for players of all levels, from beginner to advanced. Attending the festival is a sure way to make some new friends who are passionate about learning ukulele. This event takes place at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. More information can be found at the website http://www.ukulelewebsite.com/Ukulele_Website/L.A._Ukulele_Festival.html.

2) The Santa Monica Ukulele Festival is another great festival that hosts a gathering of musicians of all ranges. The venue is Santa Monica High School's music department and all donations go to support the venue. On the list of activities, there is time set aside for open mic performances, as well as a Grand Concert in the evening. Workshops are available, as well. Keep visiting the website to find out when the next festival will be: http://www.santamonicaukulelefestival.com/.

3) There are a number of groups that can be found on Meetup.com. One of the standouts is The Pluckin' Strummers. This group meets at Christ Church Griffith Park, Atwater Village. Lots of information about this enthusiastic bunch can be found at https://pluckinstrummers.wordpress.com/. This group focuses on making great ukulele tunes accessible to people who are learning to play, or who simply want to improve their repertoire. It is also a great opportunity to socialize with like-minded individuals. The Pluckin' Strummers meet twice a month and are very welcoming.

4) U-Space in Little Tokyo is a fantastic place for ukulele-lovers. This establishment houses several great classes for students of varying levels, as well as Uke Jam nights, which provide a great opportunity to play ukulele with others. U-Space is very dedicated to helping people gain skills in ukulele while building a musical community. More information can be found here: http://uspacela.com/index.html.

Ukulele is an instrument that can be played by people of all ages and skill-levels; so, I say any time is a great time to pick one up and learn to play a few chords. While taking ukulele lessons in Los Angeles, all of these events and groups will help you along your path to learning the instrument that brings beaches and palm trees to mind with just a few strums. Keep adding songs and chords to your repertoire, and soon you'll be playing with the best of them.

About Glenn

Hi, I'm Glenn. Thank you for viewing my profile. I've been teaching students for over 20 years, playing all styles and levels of music, from day-one beginners to seasoned pros seeking to sharpen their playing skills. I teach both traditional notation and tablature, writing my own teaching methods in both formats. I can transcribe any song or solo for you, and can arrange the music to fit your particular level of skill.

I earned a B.A. in Music Composition and an A.A. in music theory, and have worked as a professional musician since graduation. I play in a variety of bands that cover ro

The first song I learned to play was "Pipeline." I own and play several acoustic and electric guitars, as well as ukuleles, mandolins, bass guitars, and lap steel guitars. I'm personable and patient, and my lessons include songs, techniques, and instruction for improving your musical skills. I look forward to meeting you and having fun learning and playing music together.

Lucas is the rarest kind of teacher; the special kind who can turn a student's confused babble into a clear question with a definite answer. I signed up for music theory lessons after writing a lesson plan on Stravinsky's The Rites of Spring (I am a teacher myself) and realizing as I did that I actually had only the vaguest idea what I was talking about as I informed my students that a riot occurred on opening night back in 1913 because Stravinsky build the music on tritones, creating weird chord progressions that built a tension that was never fully resolved because the chord that came where the tension should release was close enough to tease but not close enough to fully resolve that tension. Believe it or not, that is why I decided to take lessons in music theory. I would have driven any teacher but Lucas crazy. If you want to know something about music theory but can't say exactly what, Lucas is your best bet.

Megan W.

Los Angeles, CA

Ukelele is a super fun and easy instrument to pick up - with only four strings, it's a little easier to handle than a guitar, and it's widely used in popular music today. I have students as young as 4 years old all the way up to adults looking for a new hobby in their retirement.

Let's sing and play together!

About Megan

I grew up in a music store, and learned a love for music at an early age. I started piano at age 3, and just kept adding instruments from there. I majored in music at MidAmerica Nazarene University, where I was on scholarship for Piano, Trumpet and French Horn. I have taught General Music, Beginning Band, and Beginning Orchestra in four LA area private and charter schools, as well as teaching music classes for home-school co-op groups in the Hollywood area. I've been teaching private lessons for nearly 10 years, taking students from ages 4-adult, from beginner to intermediate skill levels.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music should be fun, and my lessons are geared towards keeping students engaged and excited. I've developed a very out-of-the-box teaching style that takes into account the student's learning style, interests, and goals. It's important for students to feel successful from day 1, and it's my goal to have each student playing a song by the end of the first lesson. We sing, move, and play our way through music!

I can't say enough positive things about Megan. She works with both of my sons, teaching them piano. They have extremely different personality types and learning styles. It is amazing to see her adapt, creating the best learning environment for each of them. She has given them so much more than knowledge of how to play. She has given them a love for creating music.

Rodrigo is a great instructor, super knowledgeable and an expert musician. Although he is well versed in may styles, we focus on the theory, technique and culture of the Latin forms. Rodrigo is passionate about his craft but easy going and patient. I always look forward to our sessions and highly recommend him as an instructor.

Rodrigo is the best teacher! He has a keen understandings of main concepts of music and showed me the proper postures and fingerings of the instrument. While he was teaching me how to play the instrument, he also introduced me a various genres and styles of music. He is very knowledgeable of music theory such as chord transpositions, terminology, as well as the musical notations. He also was willing to modify the lessons to meet my needs and abilities so that I can be successful. He truly is a multi-talented teacher and very very nice one, too. Most of all, it was so fun to take lessons from him.

Troy T.

Ukulele is such a great instrument for younger students and beginners. No matter your age or experience you can learn every aspect of music on a ukulele from rhythm and timing to theory and chords! Also, the ukulele is a great instrument to learn as a transitional instrument into guitar, especially for the young ones!

About Troy

Hi my name is Troy, I currently live in Los Angeles, California. I've been teaching music for 4 years. I say teaching "music" specifically because I like to teach the many nuances of being a musician, performer, and artist in addition to technique, reading, and music history. I believe in music education being fun, productive, and something one looks forward to!

Now that you know a little bit about my teaching philosophy let me tell you a little about myself! I've been playing the guitar for 14 years, I received my Bachelor's in Music Performance and Minor in Jazz Studies from George Mason
University in Fairfax, Virginia. I studied classical guitar with Larry Snitzler, student of Andres Segovia, and jazz guitar with Rick Whitehead, of the United States Airforce Band's Airmen of Note. I also studied with Mike Melchione, Grammy award winning guitarist of Buckwheat Zydeco. I have been teaching guitar for over 4 years as my main source of income. I've played in many bands and ensembles in all sorts of genres including: rock, jazz, pop, indie, punk, metal, and many variations of classical guitar ensembles. Music is my greatest passion and I love teaching people of all ages!

Troy and his students have worked with me and my students for several years on Summer Jam projects. Our students now perform numerous times a year in various ensembles doing pop and rock music. He conducted fun rehearsals and trained his musicians to practice effectively. He definitely made the whole band experience so fun for them and got everyone so excited to perform and rock the stage!
