LeAnna S.

Los Angeles, CA

I have been teaching acting for all ages and levels for 10 years now and I focus on a student's innate creativity. Lesson are concise, relaxed and fun as we go through basic actor techniques and conclude with monologues and audition practice. Lessons are geared toward stage, commercial and film.

About LeAnna

Hello, welcome to my profile and thank you for taking the time to check it out. I am happy to introduce myself to you and share that teaching the performing arts is one of the greatest joys of my life.

I am a performing artist and teacher in Los Angeles, teaching a variety of classes from music, dance and theatre. I graduated from San Francisco State University in 2009 where I received a BA in Classical Music, a BA in Dance with a focus in choreography, and a minor in Multi-Cultural Theatre. I have such a strong, well-rounded background in many styles because I value creative explorati
on.
As a vocalist, I studied classical voice since I was 16 years old, trained at SFSU and La Universidad de Catolica in Santiago, Chile and consider that as strong foundation, but always explored other styles. I loved singing with the SFSU Gospel Choir and the SFSU Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble, playing a mix of Latin folkloric music, Salsa and jazz. Currently I am focused on musical theatre and my own compositions. As a pianist, I began playing piano when I was 7 years old and basically self taught. I received more formal training at SFSU and in music education classes, yet I credit my skills more to my own exploration. I approach my lessons with more creativity and patience, allowing students to discover how they best learn music. I consider the same with trombone. I feel in love with it one day hearing Dixieland jazz when I was 16 and haven’t stopped playing since.

I have been teaching private and group piano, trombone, voice, theatre and dance lessons for the past 8 years. I have taught from my private home studio, private music studios, community centers and public and private schools. I have worked with children as young as 5 years to adults in their 60s. I have also worked in after school programs for many years and supervised and designed music, dance and musical theatre programs for children K-8th.

*** Lesson Details ***
Considering taking lessons with me? Great!

I am very insightful, sensitive, flexible, patient and focused. I like to have fun with lessons and I laugh a lot. Joy is key and I enjoy seeing my students learn and improve. With my training as a musician, I always make sure that there is good technique and good practice habits. I wouldn't consider myself totally laid back because I do expect students to practice, (otherwise, how do you expect to get better?) yet my expectations depend on the personal goals and level of the students. I am here to teach you what YOU want to learn and tailor my lessons to that. This includes teaching whatever style you want to learn, be it pop, classical, musical theatre or R&B. It's all good to me.
As for the lessons, I start with fundamental techniques that are then later applied to songs. My intention is to assist students in reaching their personal music goals, which could range from wanting to feel good about their voice to preparing for a talent show or professional audition. I always encourage students to learn how to read music and basic theory as well performance techniques.

How I structure lessons:

Voice
1) body awareness and warm-ups
2) breathing exercises
3) vocalizes
4) focus on one vocal technique for the lesson
5) ear training with solfeggio
6) song and performance

Piano

2) finger coordination exercises
3) scales and arpeggios
4) ear training with solfeggio

2) breathing exercises and warm-ups
3) scales, slides and arpeggios
4) ear training with solfeggio
5) song and performance

Dance

1) warm-ups and isolations
2) dance material

STYLES
Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Cha Cha, Waltz, East Coast Swing

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring a small keyboard for vocal students with no piano, though I'd prefer if students have their own keyboard.

*** Specialties ***

Crystal S.

Los Angeles, CA

With a BA in Acting from London's Central School of Speech and Drama, Crystal has learned to use the nuts and bolts of technique to support freedom in artistic choice. With a focus on stage performance, she works with students to find their own unique approach to acting.

About Crystal

Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she
was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and began working regularly as a theater performer, appearing in twenty world premiers and re-imagined classics. Most notably she played the lead role of Keely Smith in the big band jazz musical “Louis and Keely: Live At The Sahara” during its eight-month run at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse. She also formed her own rock band, The Honeysuckle Jones Revival, with whom she performed her own songs all over Los Angeles. And she began working as a studio session vocalist, providing demo vocals for other songwriters, as well as arranging and performing back-up vocals for original artists, including Laura Roppe (currently in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Uncharted list of emerging artists.) Crystal played the lead role of Brooke in the new operatic rock musical “The Burning Opera LA” during its Los Angeles run in 2011 as well as providing ensemble vocals and playing piano and bass. She also performs holiday tunes from the Golden Age of American songwriting with musical quartet The Sleigh Belles.

Crystal believes that music is serious business but that it should be fun. She encourages her students to play music they love, as well as expanding their musical knowledge. She is a firm believer in basics first and emphasizes theory and technique as the tools to support creativity and provide freedom, power and control. She believes effort beats talent every time and the student who practices consistently will see results, whatever their level of ability. Most of all, she believes we were all born to make music.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson structure varies depending on the student's instrument, age, level of experience and musical style. However, all lessons focus on:

Technique
Music theory
Performance style

After 3 or 6 months of consistent lesson attendance and practice, students will have a clear understanding of how their instrument works and how to care for it. They will be able to read basic music notation. They will be working toward clearly defined musical goals and they will have at least three performance pieces learned.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Loft Space: full size electric piano with weighted keys, small digital recorder, microphone, Garage Band, parents can sit in on lessons

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring a small keyboard for vocal students with no piano, karaoke tracks and a digital recorder. I also bring a selection of games. Students are expected to purchase all necessary books and sheet music.

Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. She loves to perform in front of others now and has a confidence level that amazes me, especially now that she is going into those “teen” years. I think a lot of thanks needs to go to Crystal, for assisting my daughter in reaching her current creative level!

Great piano instructor

Crystal is an amazing piano instructor. She is patient, understanding and dedicated. My daughter has learned so much from her. My daughter’s love for music has increased immensely since learning how to play the piano. This would never have been able to be accomplished without Crystal’s professional and caring teaching style.

Wonderful person and excellent instruction

I have been taking lessons from Crystal for a few months now. I took lessons from others before I moved to the area, and I have had multiple new breakthroughs with Crystal. She is great at finding the language that allows me to understand adjustments, and is very patient and understanding. I was at ease from the first moment I met her. I highly recommend her to other adults looking to get into singing of any kind!

Melanie M.

Los Angeles, CA

Through working on monologues or scenes, they will learn about character choices, subtext, and how best to use their vocal and physical attributes in creating various characters. They will work on one piece for awhile, in order to get all the nuance they can from doing it, as well as exploring different ways of doing it. They will learn that there is not one "right" choice, but many!

About Melanie

I have been a working actor/playwright/director/teacher for many years. I began my teaching as a volunteer with HOLA (Heart of Los Angeles youth group) in 1991 teaching theatre and playwrighting to kids 5 - 20. From there, I expanded my teaching by creating my own after school program in tandem with Theatre 40 and the BHUSD called KIDS ACTING OUT. Over time, I created workshops for those kids that concentrated on Greek theatre, Elizabethan theatre, Kabuki theatre and Persian theatre. I wrote multiple plays for each of these genres (some of which are published). I also began working with
LA's Best as an after school theatre teacher in various schools throughout the LAUSD. I further expanded my teaching by beginning writing and Staged Reading classes for seniors in various sites. My oldest students are in their 90's and still going strong!

As a student of hers I am impressed by the enthusiasm and energy she brings to class. She is always prepared and it is clear she had done her own homework before showing up. She is charming, encouraging and supportive with students, and strives to make learning fun and thoughtful. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience and shares it in a way that excites and motivates her students. She's a terrific teacher.

To whom it may concern:

It is with pride and with great enthusiasm that I offer my highest recommendation for Melanie MacQueen.

I am the Artistic & Managing Director of a professional theater in Beverly Hills, California called Theatre 40. We have successfully been in business for 50 years producing award–winning and critically acclaimed plays for the public. I have many employees as well as volunteers on my staff, who work diligently producing our professional productions, many of whom are in customer service positions, dealing with the public.

For the last 20 years I have known Ms. MacQueen and have always found her to be a knowledgeable, intelligent, competent and energetic woman always excelling at whatever task she has undertaken with our theatre operation. I have given her a number of difficult and complex jobs to manage. She has performed each with excellence, attention to detail, great competence, punctuality, and honesty and always with a very positive attitude focused on doing the best job she can at whatever is asked of her.

I have found that she works well with her fellow artists and is very good with the public. Having taught and conducted an Adult Education Seminar program for many years, she is an excellent teacher. She is smart, has a talent for learning quickly and retaining what she has learned, and has excelled in every project that I have asked her to undertake, including directing several successful and complex productions and serving as a member of Theatre 40's Artistic Committee. She leads by example and our membership and the enrolled students in our Adult Education program look up to her. She has initiative, good judgment, is a team player, easy to get along with and is always exceeding my expectation in terms of the excellence that I ask for from those who work at Theatre 40.

I feel strongly that if you are considering Ms. MacQueen for a position that you will be, like I have been, very happy to have her as part of your team. She is an excellent worker and co-worker always focusing on getting the job done right as well as efficiently, correctly and quickly. She exhibits attention to detail and conscientiousness. I have found her to be a problem solver and she always remains calm and focused under pressure.

For many years I have had the pleasure of having Ms. MacQueen work on our staff and I have found that she stands out and is one of the best we have. Our adult students and other staff members enjoy her presence and her professional and pleasant demeanor. Theatre 40 has benefited from having Ms. MacQueen on our staff and I am certain that should you decide to add her to your staff that you will find, as I have, a great asset and a great employee. She is dedicated to excellence and will serve you well.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me.

Sincerely,

David Hunt Stafford

6 Mistakes You’re Making on Your Acting Resume
Professional actors often can’t help but feel a little powerless when it comes to the process of auditioning and booking jobs. Sure, from the outside people think that actors have some say in creative aspects, but your input and personal preferences are really quite insignificant in the process (well, not until you're on a Brangelina level at least). So while you're on your way to superstardom, it's smart to leverage the opportunities at hand. The first area you have control of as an actor is t

Acting Tips: What's in your Toolbox?
As with any profession, actors have tools. Just as a doctor needs a stethoscope or a fireman needs a hose, there are certain items an actor must keep in their toolbox. I usually start classes or lessons by asking my new students or clients what they think these tools might be. Sometimes, the answer is very literal ("Script!"), and other times abstract ("Passion!"). None of these is a wrong answer. Being an actor or artist is subjective and everyone's process is different and valid. But th
