Kipp K.

Long Beach, CA

We work on proper breathing (absolutely crucial), pitch, enunciation, speech-level singing (singing without vocal strain), range and enunciation. I want my students to sing easily, and with reliable pitch.

About Kipp

I fell in love with the guitar when I was ten years old, and it’s been one of the most satisfying, long-lasting and healthiest romantic relationships of my entire life. I am still in love.

When I began to play AND sing, the magic multiplied. Through performing solo and with bands, I discovered that other people also enjoyed the magic that was being channeled through me musically.

Then I found that I could teach. This was a surprise to me. I found that I am the kind of person who can explain concepts and demonstrate technique in a way that makes the new information fun for a student. My s
tudents enjoy learning, and I enjoy the fact that they are enjoying it. It is SO MUCH FUN for me to see a student’s face light up because something suddenly makes sense to them, and they GET IT. I love adding one person after another to the club of people who love to play and/or sing.

If you want your child to have more balance and a way to soothe or express strong emotion in a healthy way – and in a way that pleases them – I would like to help you to give him or her that gift. As a child and a teenager, I spent countless hours in a room with my guitar, and it really helped me to stay on an even keel. It also taught me about discipline: practicing on a daily basis brings satisfying results. I was able to make music that was beautiful to listen to, and as long as I kept practicing, it got better and better. It proved to me that regular focus on something I wanted to be good at would bring results. That’s true of most things in life. I make a point of telling my young students that practicing an instrument is just like doing homework: you get out of it what you put into it. And the results can be joyous.

Perhaps YOU, an adult, are the musician or prospective musician. It’s never too late to fall in love with a musical instrument! It’s a joy, and a meditation, a sedative or an outlet, and it’s all YOURS. There is always a creative element to playing an instrument – when two different people play the same music, it never sounds exactly the same, because a person’s personality always shines through. The creation of music or the re-creation of music is, as I said before, magical. And I would like to give you a guided tour of that wonder-world.

If, by chance, you should find that you want to play with other people, I will prepare you to be able to do that and have a BLAST. There’s a reason that the word for what you do with an instrument and what children do with toys is “PLAY.” Fun is always the objective, and I’ve never had more fun in my life than when I was playing with other great musicians. The collaborative effort multiplies the creative results beyond all understanding. This is not just fun, it is BIG FUN! I love to give people the tools they need to be able to experience that. I’ll teach you how to play and sing easily and comfortably, and give you the foundation you need to play any style of music you desire, well. I've been privileged to have really amazing teachers as I learned and developed, and I've stolen from them all the best techniques for sharing musical knowledge. I’ve made music my life’s work, and I have so much to show you!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very relaxed in my approach, and use humor to lighten up the situation. Most people are initially tense and self-conscious with a new instructor -- my job is to make a student relaxed and happy so that we can focus on the work at hand. There is a way to be disciplined and focused about learning how to play an instrument and about your practice time, but it should be enjoyable. Stress makes it harder to immerse yourself in the music, and that's what's necessary for satisfying development. I've got lots of helpful hints about how to relax and get the most out of your music time. Musicians NEVER STOP LEARNING, no matter what their level, so with music, it's doubly important to learn to enjoy the moment.

I like for my students to be able to read music, at least on a basic level. The ability to be able to decipher musical notation allows for so much more access to all kinds of music, that I really want my students to be able to learn any music they want to by looking at a piece of paper, or a post on the Internet. I use a beginning classical guitar book for my guitar students, and a generic basics book for bass students. I also like to use music of the student's choice for teaching. If they like the music they're learning, it's much easier to TEACH.

For guitar and bass students, I also teach tablature (or "Tab"), since that's become a popular and easy way of notating music.

I like to find out where a student is in his or her development, and then start their instruction from there. If it's a beginning student, we'll start with parts of the guitar, tuning the guitar, and explanations about rhythm and melody. We'll go on to basic chords, easy bass lines, keeping time, and easy melodies. If a student is more advanced, we might start with a song that the student wants to play, but is having difficulties learning. We may work on music theory so that the basic framework can help them to learn music faster, and remember it more easily. We may focus on playing technique so that the student plays more easily and efficiently. I like to identify the things that will take a student to the next level NOW, and then focus on those things until the student feels confident and comfortable with them.

Voice students get the same kind of personalized lessons, and we focus on creating sound easily and without strain, as well and pitch, timing, and tone quality. I want you to like your voice, and to feel good about singing. I want you to sing easily, and happily. The right technique allows a singer to do that, and also protects the voice from damage over time. We'll explore the ways that you can learn a healthy way of singing that sounds great to you and your listeners.

*** Studio Equipment ***
There are two Roland cube bass and guitar amplifiers available for use. Also, there is a drum room with a kit in it if I want a student to play along with a drum groove to help improve their rhythmic abilities.

In just a short amount of time I learned a lot from chords to technique from Kipp. She is an awesome guitar teacher with experience to back her up. I started learning guitar relatively late in life -in my late twenties- but I am confident Kipp can teach any age group.

Classic Guitar Lesson for 7 year old

Signed my 7 year old nephew up for 30 min weekly lessons to learn the classic guitar. Kipp did a great job making him feel comfortable and he is improving each week. She has a great skill for communicating with children and making them understand the importance of what they are learning while making it fun. I will definitely continue classes with Kipp.

About Carl

During your first lesson I do a computer analysis of your voice, I find out what your goals are in singing, what your favorite kinds of music are, and I take you in the direction you want to go and show you how to get there in the shortest possible time.

Think you're the only one who feels that terrifying nervousness? Most everyone does, including the biggest stars. One of the four books I've written is a book about it, entitled, "How To Conquer Nervousness For Singers", and I'll teach you to not only handle it, but to direct its energy into your singing, making your performance soar. I'
ve also written, "How To Get Standing Ovations For Singers" to teach you to drive your audience to their feet for a standing ovation.

I always record my students so that they know how they sound to others. I also make a CD of them singing to background music if they wish, included in the cost of the lessons for no extra charge.

Learn to sing beautifully, and most important, emotionally. Learn the parts of your vocal instrument, How each works, How they work together. Develop Breath support (80% of singing). Learn "The Singer's Formant", that "ringing" sound of professionals. Learn how to conquer nervousness, learn about Resonance, Overtones, Vibrato, How to sing high notes, Learn the "singing vowels", and more.

I would rather teach singing than eat chocolate, and if you knew how much I like chocolate, you'd know my passion for teaching singing. I've been studying voice since third grade, and teaching singing for eighteen years.

I've had nine singing teachers myself, so I know just how you feel. I get you comfortable, and I listen closely to what you want to do and where you want to go with your singing voice.

My students learn all the important aspects of singing right away, rather than drawing them out over time.

I teach beginner, intermediate, advanced, and professional students of all ages.

I teach all styles of singing, including pop, blues, gospel, classical voice, rock, jazz, SCAT singing, belting, country and western, and RAP.

I teach singing in English, Italian, Spanish, and German.

As my singing student you'll have access to the four books I've written on singing: SING BETTER FAST: a complete but concise treatise on vocal technique (It includes a Practice CD with a free recording studio program to install into your computer); How to conquer nervousness for singers, how to get standing ovations for singers, and sing better fast 2, advanced singing. These four books are the most current and relevant works on these subjects available today.

My Bachelor's and Master's Degrees are from California State University Dominguez Hills.

Put your singing voice in my hands. You'll love what happens.

*** Lesson Details ***
My introductory class includes a computer analysis of your singing voice, then describes the main parts of your vocal instrument, how each works, and how they work together. It teaches you what a song is, and how to sing a song well right away.

During the first lesson I record every student and play it back, both for computer analysis, and also so the student can hear how they sound to others. Remember the first time you heard yourself in a recording and said, "That's not me!" I'll explain that to you, and why it's so important to record yourself and listen to your recordings.

Your lessons are designed toward YOUR goals and desires in singing, and include specific guides for your between lessons practice sessions.

I also teach how to sing karaoke and impress an audience. I've been studying audience psychology for more than 15 years, and my entire orientation in teaching singing is to, "DRIVE YOUR AUDIENCE TO THEIR FEET FOR A STANDING OVATION!"

I record CD's with custom labels for students, with their picture, included in the price of the lessons. You can have a CD of yourself singing for you to to play, to give to your family and friends, or perhaps to sell.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are in my home studio, with recording equipment which we use to record you in lessons and on CD's, high quality studio monitor speakers that let you sound exactly the way you sound to others, high quality recording microphones, computer, control panel, keyboard, and music stands.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When I come to your location for lessons I bring portable equipment to do a computer analysis of the student's voice, and to record and play back my student's progress for analysis and discussion.

*** Specialties ***
I teach singing in English, Italian, Spanish, & German, in all styles, including Pop, Blues, Gospel, Classical, Rock, Jazz, Scat Singing, Belting, Country and Western, and Rap.

You will like Carl as your instructor. He is an expert at what he does, especially voice analysis with techniques to better any singing voice. He knows from A to Z what needs to be done to correct and improve, and this he imparts with specific instructions, coupled with lots of encouragement. He has generously worked with both my husband (a very good voice) and me (a bit of the ordinary) and we have always been satisfied with his professionalism and love of the art. Thanks, Carl.

Athena M.

Anaheim, CA

Experienced singing teacher of 18 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of solid vocal technique and musical performance skills. I specialize in pop, opera, classical and gospel, typically request that students record their lessons for practice at home and have students select most of the songs they'd like to study.

About Athena

About Me

If you can recognize your favorite song when you hear it, you already have what it takes to be a great musician!

MY PROMISE TO YOU:
1. Your lesson will always be geared toward what YOU want to learn, and if it seems like we are working on something that doesn't match that, I will always take the time to make clear why what we are doing will have you be able to play what you want.
2. You already have every skill you need to be a great performer, and my job is just to steer the ship in the right direction to have that happen. All I am ever doing in a lesson is making su
re that we are moving you in the ultimate direction that you want to be going musically.
3. I will do everything I know how to do to make sure that what I have learned that will benefit you becomes something you have mastered. If I could take the "computer chip" in my head and put it in yours, we would do that. Study with me and you will get the next best thing!
4.If I say something that isn't clear, or isn't useful to you, I will ALWAYS re-explain, or say it a different way, until it is useful to you and something you know how to use for your benefit on your instrument.
5. If you have a practice schedule set up with me, and for any reason you do not have time to practice or get an assignment done, I GOT IT! You can always tell me, because I've been there and I know. Music Lessons are NOT school, and I will never act like they are.

OK, now for the credentials:

MY EDUCATION

I learned how to read music at 4 years old, before I had even learned to read English. If I can do that, anyone can do that given the right set of elements.
1. I started singing at three, piano lessons at nine, began teaching myself guitar at twelve and I have never stopped playing and learning since then.
2. I earned a B.A in Music from Towson University and graduated Magna cum Laude with a Major in Jazz/Commercial Piano Performance and a Minor in Opera.
3. I made my stage performing debut in a solo role at six, and I have never stopped performing since then. I wrote my first song, all by myself, at eleven and have composed over 1000 pieces since then.
4. I have studied brain science and practical neurology for fifteen years as part of my continuing education.

MY EXPERIENCE

In addition to my extensive study of the piano, I have had many other valuable experiences as a musician and teacher, including but not limited to the following:

1. I have been a choral singer for twenty three years, and during that time toured Italy, sang at St. Martin of Tours Church in Los Angeles for fifteen of those years, and worked on mastering just about every form of sacred choral and gospel music.

2. As a soloist, began performing professionally in 1988 and have done numerous performances of my own compositions around Southern California. I also have had songs of mine pitched to major artists in Nashville and currently compose both contemporary music and feature songs for film and television.

3. I developed a method of curing tone deafness, and authored a course that teaches this to anyone whether they are a trained singer or beginner. I also authored a second course specifically for karaoke singers to learn stage presence and better performance skills.

4. I have been teaching for twenty years, working with students from 3 to 78 years old at every level of musical experience. I have taught not only music performing and instrumental technique, but song-writing, arranging, and the tricky task of singing while playing an instrument to accompany one's self. Believe me, this is a skill that DOES take a separate set of lessons to master, but every student who studies it with me does!

In short, if it's music, or even music-related, I've done it and I can teach it and I can figure out the best method to have your brain master it!

My Specialties:
Working with kids and young people in a SAFE environment to learn their instrument
Rhythm, and understanding why it is your ticket to musical mastery
How to use your own brain to be your own best teacher (when I'm not there in a lesson with you!)
Pop, Classical, Gospel, Rock, Musical Theater,

Your BRAIN is your greatest musical asset, and I have spent the past twenty-five years learning how to make the musical brain easy for everyone.

I've been a musician since I was in the cradle, and I
learned to read music before I could read English! Over the past twenty years of teaching piano, voice and guitar I have learned how to use your brain, and the basic musical skills you ALREADY have to help you turn yourself into a great musician and performer.

If you can tap your foot along with a song, and you can recognize Mary Had a Little Lamb, you've got what it takes. My specialty is taking these simple skills you already have and using them to teach you EVERYTHING you want to know how to do on your instrument. I also teach combined
lessons so that you can learn more than one instrument in your course of study if that is what you choose.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Large studio space with a piano and plenty of room to make noise! In fact, our room just got a terrific upgrade with new carpet and paint, so it looks great, feels great and sounds great.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student provides piano in their home for piano lessons. Voice students provide a recording device to record their lesson for their practice. Guitar students provide their guitar, any amps, cables, anything else they need for their rig. All students provide any CD's or mp3's they are working with during study. They pay for all books needed.

Miss.Athena was a blessing to my son. Her cheerfulness is very infectious. She was a perfect teacher for my highly energetic 5 year old son. She knew how to bring the best out of him and at the same time challenge him to do better. Her knowledge and flair in playing the piano is a treat to watch.

We moved 30 miles away from Fullerton hence had to discontinue the classes because of the distance.

Thanks Miss.Athena for instilling the love of playing Piano in Ashwin. We miss seeing you!

Matthew M.

Lakewood, CA

About Matthew

Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orc
hestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting in-front of a crowd full of cheering fans, performing music you love.

I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material, and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.

Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!

*** Lesson Details ***
For starters, understand that you're going to have a blast! Within months of working together, I'll have you playing your favorite songs, or feeling prepared for that upcoming audition. I remember what it was like to have second thoughts about auditioning and performance, and I'll make sure those thoughts are a thing of the past for you!

During our lessons, I enjoy addressing the material you have to work on, whether in school or just for your own enjoyment. At the same time, I will present music and materials of my own, and I encourage you to do the same!

I have always enjoyed learning from my students as they have learned from myself, and I could only hope to express how rewarding it is when I see a student of mine progress from week to week and achieve their own goals.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, you can be guaranteed we'll make steady progress and we will achieve your goals. Get ready to wow your friends and family!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Metronome
Post-it Notes
Music Stand(s)
Chairs
Computer/Internet
Keyboard
Guitar(s)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide utilities including music stand, metronome, some external source of pitch.

I expect the student to bring any and all assigned music/material they wish to work on. The student will also begin the lesson prepared with basic necessities, including a pencil (please, no pens) and all music assigned from prior lesson (if this is a first-lesson, bring any/all music you currently have and/or are working on). Vocal students will bring a bottle of water. Trumpet students will have their own valve oil and mouthpiece (if not originally included with your horn).

*** Specialties ***
Trumpet methods include (not limited to) Arban's, Clarke, Sachs, Rubank, Getchell, Adam, Schlossberg, Colin, Bai Lin.

For instruments outside the trumpet, methods will address school curriculum, unless student has advanced beyond provided materials.

I strongly encourage students of voice, guitar, and piano to pick material of their choosing.

Classical and rock are the genres to which I am most attracted

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!

Cerritos, CA

I hold a master's in vocal performance from Cal State University, Fullerton and a Bachelor's in vocal performance from USC. I've been teaching voice for over 13 years. As a classical singer, I've had professional experience doing lead roles with various performing groups. This has taught me the level of expertise which is required in the real world of singing. In teaching singing, I focus on a breath-based technique where we focus on technical exercises designed to help you breathe more efficiently. We also work a lot on proper vowel formation and strive to eliminate excessive tension in your vocal instrument. Last but not least, we work on interpreting the music (musical phrasing, pronunciation, subtext). My goal is to help you become the best performer you can be. I encourage singers to take part in 2 studio recitals a year as well as various evaluations and competitions, depending on your own personal goals. I am a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and ...

About Shannon

I hold a master's in voice from CSUF and a double bachelor's in piano and voice from USC. With over 13 years of experience as a private voice and piano instructor I have had the privilege of helping many students achieve their musical goals. As a member of MTAC and NATS, I enter many students in Certificate of Merit, Student Evaluation Program, and other festivals. For pianists, I work on songs, scales, theory, ear training and sometimes improvisation. For singers, we work on a breath-based breathing technique and songs that reinforce good singing habits but that are also engaging for the sing
er. We also work on sight singing and theory.Though my training is mostly in classical music, I do work on other styles with my students.

For pianists, I recommend the Premier Alfred piano course, or for older beginners/adults, we use Adult Piano Adventures. I also recommend purchasing a scale/technique book and a theory book.

For singers, please bring a recording device (phone is ok) so that you may later practice the exercises which we learn in the lesson.
