*** Lesson Details ***
Music is fun.

My personality is laid back, but I would never say that I teach that way.
There is a delicate balance between learning, fun, and concentration.

I have watched my students (especially the beginners) grow as people as well as musicians over the course of a few months. It's really amazing to watch someone do things they never thought they would do, sing or play something they thought was beyond them.
That alone makes what I do really special to me.

Gregory H.

Astoria, NY

The key to this instrument is its simplicity! Learn to have unlimited technique to play any style.

About Gregory

As a younger brother at the age of five, I began studying the piano because my older sister did. After my foundation in music strengthened I fell in love with the trumpet. At first, each note took time to develop and I enjoyed the challenge. The trumpet allowed me to travel all over the Southeast later in life and even to China with a 1940's Radio Show. I enjoyed many top-level bands the kindled my love and passion for good music. I want to share that kindling with my students in a nurturing and guiding situation, just like my teachers gave me.
I used to go to lessons and become
so motivated and inspired that I thought I could change the world. I always knew that I would want to give back exactly that. As my performance opportunities grew into venues like Churchill Grounds, The Rialto, and The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta and Radio City Music Hall, 54 Below, The Jazz Standard, Bowery Ballroom, Shapeshifter and Flushing Town Hall in New York, my fire for wanting to develop my teaching did also. I was always thinking back to what my old teachers gave me, inspiration. I then understood that inspiration is the key to success in life.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will be something the student looks forward to every week. We will work through common method books and learn material that the student has an interest in. For example, some students want to learn to play high notes, a popular song, improvise, or write their own songs. I am a laid back guy, but I do expect effort in the lessons and at home. I believe whatever you put into music is what you get out of it, and I will inspire and motivate the student to get as much out of the lessons as they can. Students will create, with my advisement, and update short term and long term goals every few months.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Keyboard or Piano and Music Stand

*** Travel Equipment ***
They should provide their instrument, instrument care products (valve oil), method books and sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz and classical music. I use many common methods depending on how the student tends to learn the best, and will even combine different methods if the student requires it.

We could not ask for more in a teacher. Gregory helped our son prepare for NYC high school auditions this year and he was extremely professional, a very, very good teacher and overall just a very nice person to deal with. He gets our highest recommendation.

Bobby S.

Brooklyn, NY

The trumpet is a colorful and exciting instrument played in many styles of music throughout the world, from jazz and classical to funk and soul to reggae, afro-beat, and Balkan music. In addition to covering the basic technical requirements of the instrument, I'm particularly interested in the many genres in which the trumpet can be found, and I like to focus on the styles of music that most interest and challenge my students. I have been playing trumpet for more than 18 years, and I teach my students valuable brass exercises based on lessons I learned under the tutelage of John McNeil, Laurie Frink, and Walter White. I encourage the use of long tones, air support, and trumpet calisthenics to improve tone, increase range and endurance, and work towards greater flexibility.

About Bobby

I am a jazz trumpeter, improviser, and composer as well as an avid listener and enthusiastic educator. I maintain an active performance schedule playing improvised music as well as funk, soul, afro-beat, reggae, hip-hop, and American folk music. In addition to trumpet, I have experience performing and recording on slide trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, and french horn. I write and arrange music for my own groups and regularly write and record horn arrangements for folk, pop, and reggae groups. I have attended Berklee College of Music and Ithaca College, and I have a Master's degree in jazz tr
umpet performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

I have over nine years of experience working with students ages 7 to adult. I have worked both from my home studio and though several public and community music school programs including the Hudson Arts Alliance in Hudson, MA, the Kittredge Elementary School in North Andover, MA, and the Performing Arts Center of Metro West in Framingham, MA. I have studied jazz performance with trumpet greats John McNeil and Walter White, improvisation with jazz gurus David Schumacher and Jerry Bergonzi, and George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization with master composer and theorist Ben Schwendener.

As an educator, my aim is to inspire in my students an enthusiasm for the artistic performance of music of any style. I strive to convey my own excitement for the art to young trumpeters and improvisers, and I have worked to encourage self-motivation and a longstanding interest in musical self-expression in elementary through high school students and adults. I have experience performing many styles of music from jazz and experimental improvised music to funk, reggae, and afro-beat, and I use my knowledge of divergent genres to encourage creative experimentation and convey the expressive artistic elements shared by all music. As an improviser I am particularly interested in teaching the theory and philosophy of spontaneous composition and musical communication.

Bobby is a great teacher! During my time taking lessons, he always found a way to explain concepts in a manner that I could relate to. Coming from flute, I knew basic fundamentals of reading music and structure and Bobby took the time to make suggestions that were along the lines of my musical experiences and strengths. If you're looking to learn the trumpet, I'd definitely recommend Bobby because he's able to break down concepts and is very patient. If you've been playing trumpet for awhile and wish to get even better, I'd suggest taking lessons with him because Bobby definitely has the resume, experience and knowledge to help any trumpet player go further.

Jessica S.

Woodside, NY

I have 5 years of experience teaching beginner and intermediate trumpet. In my lessons I like to incorporate the use of conversational solfege and the Arbans method, the rest is up to you!

Students are my number one priority. I believe in teaching outside the book, to give each one of my students an individualized plan to reach their goals. I will always go above and beyond to steer you in the right direction, and to make your music experience last a lifetime.

Students can expect to be appropriately challenged with repertoire, in a supportive, communicative environment. I am happy to work on school repertoire, pop tunes or music from the standard repertoire. I believe in efficiency and getting the most out of your practice time. We all lead busy lives, I will teach you how to accomplish your goals with the time you want to invest.

Jess is not only an amazing French horn player, but a dedicated teacher as well. I first met her when we both attended the University of Delaware, where I got to work with her as a fellow musician. She has amazing discipline when it comes to studying and practicing, and she brings that dedication to her teaching as well. With her bachelor's and master's degree in Performance, she has a vast array of techniques and exercises at her disposal that she is excited to share with any student who is willing and ready to learn. As a teacher, she will take the time to individualize a students' needs and goals. She loves to share her passion for music and will share in her students' success.

My son, a freshman in high school, has been taking lessons with Karl since January 2015 and it has been a great experience. Karl is knowledgeable, patient and punctual. He has helped my son prepare for upcoming auditions and exams as well as helping him improve his technique and breathing. We have been very impressed by Karl's enthusiasm for his craft and how he is able to pass this on to our son.
