New York, NY

Kick your face, land those double pirouettes, and have some ballet meets jazz/musical theatre FUN with me! With a primary focus on classical ballet technique, we move from basic barre exercises, to the center for some more jazz-y warm ups, then go FULL OUT into some musical theatre combos. #work!

About Steven

Hey guys! I have a passion for Musical Theatre and all that comes with the wonderful art form--acting, singing, dancing, and doing all three at the same time :). I'™m here to meet my students where they're at and help them grow from there.
I have a knack for getting my students to tell their stories in a strong, direct way. I focus on using the words the lyricist or playwright has given achieve the character'™s objective (and consequently, grip the audience's attention). However, that'™s all the delicious whipped cream and frosting at the top of the cake. In order to create an arc in
a song, a character with an objective, and a human being fighting for something, we need to get in touch with the instruments we are using: our voice, our body, and our mind.
Focusing our mind on presence is the key to accessing an open body. Without presence, we aren't in our bodies. Our minds race, the inner critic judges, and we can go through a whole lesson (or performance!) without actually having witnessed our creative expression. Once we can focus our mind, we begin focusing our body. We make choices, or in most cases, our bodies make the choices for us, while we sit back and allow the expression to develop organically. In order to access presence, I use exercises borrowed from a number of body, mind, and voice techniques: meditation, yoga, and being a goof ball.
Then we can start with the voice. I love helping students find new sounds, range, and texture to their voices. To do this, I use basic exercises that emphasize a number of skills we need to hone: open vowels, forward/nasal placement, palatal alignment, and using the lighter mechanism of our voice we so often want to ignore. Once our body, voice, and mind are aligned, we are ready to tackle the song, scene, monologue, or dance combination we are working on in our lesson.
Let's do it!

Great Voice Teacher

I had a singing lesson with Steven last week and it was great! I was having vocal difficulties with a song, which prevented me from expressing the emotion the song needed. Steven listened to me sing, he identified the problem and we immediately embarked on vocal exercises that unlocked my voice. Then we worked on interpretation and the emotional arc of the song. Steven’s teamwork approach was productive and a lot of fun. His perceptive coaching helped me find new ways to approach the song. I highly recommend Steven as a vocal instructor and coach.

Steven's great, and won't break the bank

Steven is not only incredibly patient with me in our lessons, but he is also very efficient in our time together. One thing I like about his way or teaching is that we work on technique and then always make sure to applying what we're working on to a song so it's never strictly exercises. It's also great that Steven is a singer himself and actually works professionally.

I will cater to what each individual needs, working with dance material you already know teach you choreography to achieve the following:

-provide personalized feedback to help improve technical and artistic growth.

- give tools to improve and deepen your understanding of technique

- explain how to connect your expressiveness with your technique

My style is very supportive and direct. I believe that to improve as a dancer you need personal feedback and hard work. I am very passionate about sharing what I know to help other dancers reach their goals.

About Amanda

I am currently dancing with the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company and on faculty teaching at the Paul Taylor School. While maintaining a professional dance career in New York City, I have been passionate about teaching dance for the past 9 years.

I have taught Master Classes and Intensive Workshops in the Paul Taylor style throughout the nation, as well as teaching Vaganova Ballet at the Joffrey Ballet School. I have taught in numerous public schools through teaching residencies with Rioult Dance Company and Education In Dance. I believe these experiences have taught me how to assess individuals
quickly and provide clear feedback in a positive and supportive way.

My teaching style is energetic, and focused on the personal experience each dancer is having, while giving direct and clear feedback. My goal is to help students reach their artistic potential in their dancing by helping to combine technique with lyricism, rhythmic dynamics and emotive qualities.

Private lessons can be catered toward each individual. Either for an upcoming audition, feedback on solo or ensemble choreography, to help personalize technical corrections and to help push technique to a higher level, or for non dancers to help understand movement and feel comfortable in a beginning class.
