Are you ready to start speaking French? This online French class is perfect for beginners who are taking the first steps toward becoming fluent. An expert instructor will teach you the basics of the French language, including the alphabet, proper pronunciation, grammar rules, and verb conjugation.

You’ll also pick up a variety of essential vocabulary words and phrases that will take you one step closer to being able to have full conversations in this beautiful language. Here are some of the topics we’ll cover in this fun and interactive, group class. Join today to quickly expand your knowledge of basic French and start communicating in no time!

    The French Alphabet

One of the first topics you’ll cover when learning French for beginners is the alphabet. Fortunately for English-speaking students, the French alphabet has the same letters as the English alphabet. However, there are many different accents that add some flair to our familiar English sounds.

A majority of these accents occur on vowel sounds, and your expert instructor will make sure you know how to pronounce each one. She will spell out each French letter phonetically, including the tricky “R” sound, and as you repeat the sounds back you’ll receive instant feedback and guidance!

This will help you develop the right foundation of skills before you begin to learn entire words and phrases. You’ll also get to have fun while learning and play a few games with your teacher and peers. These games will help you memorize all of the new sounds you’ve been introduced to.

    Proper Pronunciation

Correct pronunciation in French is key because if you mispronounce a word, it can take on a whole new meaning! One example is the slight difference between “roue” and “rue.” The first word means “wheel” and the second means “street.”

Because French pronunciation is very different than English’s, your expert instructor will spend some time sounding out and breaking down difficult words. Students will have a chance to repeat each sound back to the instructor to ensure proper pronunciation.

Did you know that French has one extra vowel sound in addition to English vowels? In this class, you’ll learn about the difference between the “ou” and “u” sounds. One common mistake that beginners tend to make is mixing up “je” and “j’ai.” As you practice speaking, your instructor will catch and correct these mistakes so your pronunciation improves.

You’ll also listen to audio clips and translate back what you heard. The more you listen to proper French pronunciation, the more you’ll begin to see your own accent getting better and better. Poems, tongue twisters, and reading through dialogues will also help you master the diverse sounds in this beautiful language.

    Grammar Rules

French has a lot in common with the English language. Following the Norman Conquest in 1066, French became the language of English royalty for several generations. As a result, French influenced the development of English, so the two languages share many of the same roots and grammatical structures.

In this online French class, your instructor will go cover the basics of French grammar, including subject pronouns (such as I, you, he/she, we, and they), present tense verb conjugation, and sentence structure. You’ll learn about the two most important verbs - “être” for “to be” and “avoir” for “to have” - as well as how to use them in the right context.

Although French does have a lot in common with English, there are some key differences. For example, in French there are two ways to say “you.” Also, all nouns can be either masculine or feminine. If you have studied or are fluent in Spanish, then you’ll already be familiar with these unique qualities of the French language.

Some beginners may find that the differences between French pronunciation and its written form are hard to grasp, but the French language is actually very logical. Its written form follows patterns that can be learned and easily recognized, as long as you commit to studying and practicing them on your own throughout the week.

    Vocabulary and Conversation Skills

Once you have a solid understanding of French pronunciation and grammar rules, you can now advance to forming complete sentences and having conversations in French! To start off, your instructor will introduce you to some helpful vocabulary like numbers, colors, and food, using a visual presentation.

You’ll learn how to greet new people, introduce yourself, convey likes and dislikes, accept or refuse invitations, and discuss the weather. You’ll also have the chance to ask your classmates questions to keep the conversation going! These are all essential topics for basic conversations in French and they can be easily memorized using the right techniques.

To reinforce all your newfound knowledge outside of class, your instructor will recommend a few valuable resources, such as online flashcards and worksheets. Listening to French music or watching French movies is another excellent way to improve your conversation skills and accent, especially when it comes to making the prevalent nasal sound!

Mikayla is an absolutely amazing teacher!! I enrolled my 10 year old daughter in Take Lessons during the summer of 2016 to prepare her for a new private school atmosphere. Honestly, I was hesitant, this was her first time being exposed to a second language. I'm happy to say
, Mikayla helped her rise to the occassion! She is not only excelling in her class but she is speaking French fluently and confidently volunteering for roles in various plays at her school. She is currently one of the top students in her class and is always eager to share her week with Mikayla to be challenged with new goals. We will continue our journey with Mikayla as long as my daughter continues to master the love and language of the French Culture. We highly recommend taking lessons with Mikayla!!!

This is our fourth week with Mikayla. As a mom, I can already tell a difference in my son's ability to make english to French connection. His confidence is up supremely in class and most importantly, he seems to be enjoying learning the language more. Working with Mikayla is
something my son looks forward to weekly. Incorporating lessons with her has greatly improved my son's success in French class. I only wish we had incorporated lessons with her sooner. Extremely satisfied!!
