Benjamin K.

Chicago, IL

I have been teaching math for several years now and understand the need for a good foundation. I work with students to find any concepts they have missed or do not fully understand. My goal in teaching math is always comprehension not grades. After laying a good foundation, it is amazing to see the improvement and success my students have had!

About Benjamin

My expansive breadth of interests has led me through years of experience in the arts and natural sciences. I'm a voice instructor, math tutor, and biology teacher. Now, I'm pursuing a career in opera and vocal performance.

I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have been in many operas and musical theater productions. I am currently enrolled as a second year masters student at the Chicago College of Performing Arts studying vocal performance. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz, rock, and pop. I have prev
iously taught at The School of Rock in Indianapolis Indiana. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. Several of my students have recored albums and are currently performing all over the U.S. I use the appoggio technique of breathing and believe all singing should be produced in a way that does not damage the vocal folds.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectations that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique form day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I teach an open throat technique called appoggio. It is the technique opera singers use, but can be applied to any music style. This technique allows the singer to sing with their entire voice using a relaxed larynx. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, recording equipment, large collection of sheet music, subscription to IPA source (foreign language translations and pronunciations), several math and science textbooks

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students find their true singing voice.

Benjamin is my second instructor I have had on TakeLessons, I stopped with the first when I did not think it would be a good fit. I have only had two lessons and I can already see that Benjamin has high attention to detail and is very skilled. I want someone to teach me the fundamentals, point out my bad habits and teach me methods to correct them - no compromises. I am confident that Benjamin will get me on the right track and intend to continue on with him.

Benjamin has improved my vocals beyond words. Within the first 2 months I increased my range by an octave more on my chest and head voice, dramatically increased my control, and learned how to sing with much less stress and tension then before. His teaching approach deals with logic and anatomy which resonates more to me then memorizing a million stupid little tricks like with my old teachers. I have Benjamin to thank for my dramatic increase in vocal sound and confidence. I will continue to take lessons with him until i run out of money!

Ms. Rachel was a great Spanish instructor. Her schedule was always very flexible, and she taught me a lot of material in the time allotted. Also, Ms. Rachel always created lesson plans before our lessons so I knew exactly what I would be learning that day. She keeps in touch with her students even after they're done taking lessons. If you're considering taking lessons, you should definitely have Ms. Rachel as your instructor.

Rachel was an excellent instructor and took the time to help me learn Spanish the way I wanted to learn. I was more interested in learning Spanish through reading a Spanish/English Bible, news articles and through song lyrics than just a text book. Text books can be so boring! If you want to learn Spanish in fun and creative ways Rachel would be a great tutor!

Amadou C.

Chicago, IL

I have a passion for mathematics, because it is universal, and I travel a lot. So practically, it's the one language that I can communicate with everyone with. one of the highlight of my math career was when I used the math I'd mastered to create and program an awesome automated condiment dispenser, and help a doctoral student get an 'A' on her statistics assignment upon starting our lessons just two days before the due date.
And yes, I love sharing my vast pool of mathematical intellect with anyone whose willing to 'swim' in it, by breaking it down theorem by theorem until it's an 'empty set', that I can reassemble into a more understandable and entertaining form.

About Amadou

~ I am a distinguished graduate with Summa Cum Laude honors from Ivy Tech College. I make it my duty to break down many of the complexities in math and science that have been plaguing students since the beginning of time. I have years of experience, and have taught several middle-school and high-school students math, science and ACT/SAT prep who have went on to make 180 degree turns in their grades under my instruction. And because I have worked with such a vast diversity of people over the span of 16 countries throughout the world, I have developed the patience and understanding that is cruci
al in producing stellar students. And age is never a problem with me, as I've helped several post-graduate students straighten out their grievances in math and science. I am majoring in mechanical engineering, so naturally, I maintain an exemplary study ethic that inspires my students to achieve more. All in all, I bring results. I know how to relate to my students, by incorporating some of the things that they like (sports, hobbies, music, etc...) into their most challenging courses in order for them to eventually foster a passion for them. I make a conscious effort to work at each student's own pace and I make sure to decompose enigmatic topics into components the can be more easily consumed by my students, effectively increasing their grades and giving them the self-confidence and optimism they need to fuel their future academic endeavors. I guarantee quality, commitment, and a passion for training my students to be the best. I am also sophomore in college who loves sharing his knowledge with others. I was always the kid in class who was constantly trying to make sure all of the others understood the material. I have been to over 16 countries in the world, including France, the UK and even Djibouti in the horn of Africa. And as a result of these extended expeditions, I can speak French fluently. I also have a very strong background in math and in the natural sciences. I have consistently maintained a 4.0 G.P.A since 11th grade, am now taking Calculus III, and I have gotten 5s in all of my AP Chemistry, AP Physics and AP Biology exams. I have also been the winner of many STEM-related competitions, through my demonstrating of exemplary leadership qualities and through my brainstorming of blue-sky ideas. I am also "Mental-Math" expert and tutor. Everyone has potential, but potential is worthless unless one can make it kinetic. In other words. you need to set your abilities in motion in order to achieve your goals. And fortunately, you have experts like me who are dedicated to helping you make that a reality. ~

Shannon M.

Chicago, IL

I have been teaching Math for 15 years. I have experience teaching 3rd grade through 8th grade math with various topics. I can teach students who are as scared of math as I am of the dentist. I can also teach students who feel like they have it all figured out, new things. I can assist in homework or create new lessons to review or enrich. I enjoy finding new ways to approach learning through hands on and real world math. I believe it is important to understand the "why" behind math.

About Shannon

Hi, my name is Shannon. I am a 4th and 5th grade teacher and I love it. My approach to teaching is to find things that captivate my students and use that to teach them. I use music, current events, and lots of technology as resources for learning.

I grew up in Springfield IL. I loved growing up there, but so happy to be living in Chicago. I left Springfield to attend college at Saint Mary's College across the street from Notre Dame. Go Irish!!! After fours years at school, I moved to Chicago and began teaching. I have been teaching for 15 years and feel lucky to have found somethi
ng I love doing and am good at. Besides spending time with my students, planning lessons, and grading papers, I enjoy running and have run the Chicago Marathon twice. I have a Golden Retriever that is 10 years old and I love to take him for long walks. I coach the 5th and 6th grade girls basketball team, love baseball, and enjoy cheering on the Bears.

The public school system of today requires individuals to function as a different kind of educator. They need teachers who will not only teach, but will also inspire and lead. Moreover, they need administrators who understand the different relationships between students, parents, and schools. As an administrator, I oversaw the successful deployment of several tutoring programs and worked to ensure the longevity of these initiatives. I have a wealth of experience and knowledge to contribute.

About Celeste

I am a graduate student in Language and Literature at the University of Chicago. Still, I have a wealth of experience in the classroom and in after-school programs. I have been a tutor for over ten years and have taught a wide variety of subjects to an array of different students.
