Farobag C.

Homer Glen, IL

Specializing in a broad array from arithmetic through Calculus. Lessons may also be arranged via Skype.

About Farobag

Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principal conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.

A double graduate of the Eastma
n School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States. In addition to the Suzuki curriculum, he is also associated with the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program that sets a national standard of musical achievement in various fields.

Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto. A New Year's eve performance in Los Angeles is scheduled for 2014.

Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.

Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.

*** Lesson Details ***
Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. This is of great import if the prospective musician wants the audience to truly enjoy his or her performance !

Whether it be the 3 Rs or preparation in the performing arts, a remarkable instructor must go well beyond the subject matter at hand and help imbue the student with a spirit of wonder that, in due time, will foster enthusiasm necessary for excellence.

A child emulates and learns to communicate in his or her mother-tongue through a supporting and nurturing environment. Likewise, a student needs to be sufficiently motivated to embrace learning in a familiar supportive manner.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lesson take place in the living room. Driveway parking. No pets.

*** Travel Equipment ***
None; I do expect a reasonably good piano / keyboard at a student's home.

*** Specialties ***
Traditional and Suzuki-based education. Performance and musicality training is open to all instrumentalists.

I love listening to music. I took each of my sons to music lesson starting at age 4. Music and singing come natural to them now as adults.
My favorite times are listening to them and I would love to join in but I am always self conscience and don't want to embarrass them.
When we recently retired I decided to take some classes for enjoyment and also to push myself to conquer some fears..I was going to go to a local music teacher to inquire about singing lesson, but somehow I happened on takelessons.com and was matched up with Mr. Farobag. Lucky me!! I have been taking lessons on Skype for over 6 months now! Farobag is the kindest and the most patient teacher in the world..really, really..he makes me feel like I can keep a tune and that I am capable of improving.
I actually pleasantly surprised my family by volunteering at a camp talent show over the summer. I might not have been the best but I was given a standing ovation for trying. (and probably the oldest up there!)
..and this is the best..I was taking lessons for more than 2 months when I decided to look up Mr. Farobag on the TakeLessons site..Oh My Goodness! I really lucked out - that is all I will say- as I could go on and on about his talents and cv!
Thank You Thank you Farobag for your encouragement.

Mr. Farobag provides piano lessons for my teenage daughter. She has been working with him for about 10 months. Since she started working with Farobag, her love for playing piano has grown, and her skills have improved exponentially. In addition to his obvious talents, he is professional, patient, and also very flexible with scheduling. He has a genuine interest in seeing his students learn and improve. I would highly recommend him for anyone interested in taking lessons. He also has a strong background in math, and has offered to tutor my 3 children, if needed. We may be calling upon him soon for that!

I can not describe my level of admiration and respect for Farobag. He is a great teacher, very much in sync with his inner child and therefore a perfect teacher. Hard to imagine he giving up of any of his students no matter how hard at times teaching appears to be.

Benjamin K.

Chicago, IL

I have been teaching math for several years now and understand the need for a good foundation. I work with students to find any concepts they have missed or do not fully understand. My goal in teaching math is always comprehension not grades. After laying a good foundation, it is amazing to see the improvement and success my students have had!

About Benjamin

My expansive breadth of interests has led me through years of experience in the arts and natural sciences. I'm a voice instructor, math tutor, and biology teacher. Now, I'm pursuing a career in opera and vocal performance.

I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for many years and continue to add to my own technique. I have been in many operas and musical theater productions. I am currently enrolled as a second year masters student at the Chicago College of Performing Arts studying vocal performance. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz, rock, and pop. I have prev
iously taught at The School of Rock in Indianapolis Indiana. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. Several of my students have recored albums and are currently performing all over the U.S. I use the appoggio technique of breathing and believe all singing should be produced in a way that does not damage the vocal folds.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectations that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice lessons with me are fun and effective. You can expect to hear improved technique form day one, eventually reaching your long term goals. I teach an open throat technique called appoggio. It is the technique opera singers use, but can be applied to any music style. This technique allows the singer to sing with their entire voice using a relaxed larynx. I begin every lesson aligning the students voice through various vocal warm ups and exercises. We then work together to pick repertoire that will suit the singer'€™s voice and they will enjoy singing. During a lesson we will also cover performance presentation, acting, diction, rhythm, musicality, style, and interpretation.

During tutoring you can expect a personalized plan based on your goals and aspirations. Since every student is different you can be assured we will come up with a plan that is designed just for you. I am a laid back tutor but will be sure to get the most out of you after our time together. Most students see at least a one letter grade improvement. My main goal for every tutoring session is student learning and comprehension.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, recording equipment, large collection of sheet music, subscription to IPA source (foreign language translations and pronunciations), several math and science textbooks

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students find their true singing voice.

First time I signed up my 5 year old for lessons and Ben has managed to incorporate a serious learning environment with a fun twist for her. At first I thought we were all in over our heads in this venture. But after getting used to the lessons I can see my daughter's learning and love for song will grow more every week. It's not what she initially invosioned in a singing class but I can see she'll realize the value of how singing is done.

Benjamin is my second instructor I have had on TakeLessons, I stopped with the first when I did not think it would be a good fit. I have only had two lessons and I can already see that Benjamin has high attention to detail and is very skilled. I want someone to teach me the fundamentals, point out my bad habits and teach me methods to correct them - no compromises. I am confident that Benjamin will get me on the right track and intend to continue on with him.

Amadou C.

Chicago, IL

I have a passion for mathematics, because it is universal, and I travel a lot. So practically, it's the one language that I can communicate with everyone with. one of the highlight of my math career was when I used the math I'd mastered to create and program an awesome automated condiment dispenser, and help a doctoral student get an 'A' on her statistics assignment upon starting our lessons just two days before the due date.
And yes, I love sharing my vast pool of mathematical intellect with anyone whose willing to 'swim' in it, by breaking it down theorem by theorem until it's an 'empty set', that I can reassemble into a more understandable and entertaining form.

About Amadou

~ I am a distinguished graduate with Summa Cum Laude honors from Ivy Tech College. I make it my duty to break down many of the complexities in math and science that have been plaguing students since the beginning of time. I have years of experience, and have taught several middle-school and high-school students math, science and ACT/SAT prep who have went on to make 180 degree turns in their grades under my instruction. And because I have worked with such a vast diversity of people over the span of 16 countries throughout the world, I have developed the patience and understanding that is cruci
al in producing stellar students. And age is never a problem with me, as I've helped several post-graduate students straighten out their grievances in math and science. I am majoring in mechanical engineering, so naturally, I maintain an exemplary study ethic that inspires my students to achieve more. All in all, I bring results. I know how to relate to my students, by incorporating some of the things that they like (sports, hobbies, music, etc...) into their most challenging courses in order for them to eventually foster a passion for them. I make a conscious effort to work at each student's own pace and I make sure to decompose enigmatic topics into components the can be more easily consumed by my students, effectively increasing their grades and giving them the self-confidence and optimism they need to fuel their future academic endeavors. I guarantee quality, commitment, and a passion for training my students to be the best. I am also sophomore in college who loves sharing his knowledge with others. I was always the kid in class who was constantly trying to make sure all of the others understood the material. I have been to over 16 countries in the world, including France, the UK and even Djibouti in the horn of Africa. And as a result of these extended expeditions, I can speak French fluently. I also have a very strong background in math and in the natural sciences. I have consistently maintained a 4.0 G.P.A since 11th grade, am now taking Calculus III, and I have gotten 5s in all of my AP Chemistry, AP Physics and AP Biology exams. I have also been the winner of many STEM-related competitions, through my demonstrating of exemplary leadership qualities and through my brainstorming of blue-sky ideas. I am also "Mental-Math" expert and tutor. Everyone has potential, but potential is worthless unless one can make it kinetic. In other words. you need to set your abilities in motion in order to achieve your goals. And fortunately, you have experts like me who are dedicated to helping you make that a reality. ~

The most wonderful thing about Amadou is his innate capacity to connect with young people, and in doing so, he make the tutoring sessions and the learning that takes place seemingly fluid and effortless. I hired him to tutor my 10 year old son in math. We met at his office in Hyde Park and we stayed with him for about 2 months, but then we had scheduling conflicts. My son has an innate ability with math (inherited from my husband). He's very intuitive with it, but he also had a problem with focusing and taking time to work through each and every step (also inherited from my husband). He would get frustrated working with me, so I thought having someone else who would make math fun and challenging would ensure that he was advancing appropriately in math. Amadou's sessions were structured, he factored in breaks (incl. snacks!) and he provided workbooks and homework that he would go over the next lesson. He was always looking for ways to engage my son's mind, but make it interesting. He went step by step through a sample problem,, and then would work through additional problems and point out errors and talk them through with my son. He was also open to listening to me when I made suggestions about content and approach. He was very good. As my son told me, "an hour just flies by with Amadou, it doesn't feel like work at all!" I recommend him highly.

Michael P.

Chicago, IL

Qualification: Economics B.A. with Physics Minor from the University of Chicago. I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of math skills. I teach everything from algebra up through college calculus and students can expect thorough preparation based on any material or information they provide me from their classes.

About Michael

I've been playing drums and percussion around the world for over fifteen years, mostly for fun but with a few professional gigs thrown in there as well. Most recently, I have just ended a stint with my heavy metal band Erlang Kovata. Our album 'Shattered' has been nominated for best metal/hardcore album at the independent music awards. Prior to that, I played with a number of different groups and organizations: a couple of student groups at the University of Chicago, the Middlebury College Orchestra, the Champlain Philharmonic, Bella Voce Women's Chorus, the Vermont Youth Orchestra, and more.
I have given occasional drum lessons through the years, but my teaching experience comes mostly through my time as an English Teacher in South Korea, and as an Academic Tutor for the past several years. My teaching focuses for drums will be hard rock, heavy metal, and unpitched percussion.

I have also excelled academically, with my academic career culminating in an Economics B.A., Physics Minor with General Honors from the University of Chicago.
