Gregory H.

Astoria, NY

One of the most enjoyable instruments to play when done correctly.

About Gregory

As a younger brother at the age of five, I began studying the piano because my older sister did. After my foundation in music strengthened I fell in love with the trumpet. At first, each note took time to develop and I enjoyed the challenge. The trumpet allowed me to travel all over the Southeast later in life and even to China with a 1940's Radio Show. I enjoyed many top-level bands the kindled my love and passion for good music. I want to share that kindling with my students in a nurturing and guiding situation, just like my teachers gave me.
I used to go to lessons and become
so motivated and inspired that I thought I could change the world. I always knew that I would want to give back exactly that. As my performance opportunities grew into venues like Churchill Grounds, The Rialto, and The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta and Radio City Music Hall, 54 Below, The Jazz Standard, Bowery Ballroom, Shapeshifter and Flushing Town Hall in New York, my fire for wanting to develop my teaching did also. I was always thinking back to what my old teachers gave me, inspiration. I then understood that inspiration is the key to success in life.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons will be something the student looks forward to every week. We will work through common method books and learn material that the student has an interest in. For example, some students want to learn to play high notes, a popular song, improvise, or write their own songs. I am a laid back guy, but I do expect effort in the lessons and at home. I believe whatever you put into music is what you get out of it, and I will inspire and motivate the student to get as much out of the lessons as they can. Students will create, with my advisement, and update short term and long term goals every few months.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Keyboard or Piano and Music Stand

*** Travel Equipment ***
They should provide their instrument, instrument care products (valve oil), method books and sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz and classical music. I use many common methods depending on how the student tends to learn the best, and will even combine different methods if the student requires it.

We could not ask for more in a teacher. Gregory helped our son prepare for NYC high school auditions this year and he was extremely professional, a very, very good teacher and overall just a very nice person to deal with. He gets our highest recommendation.

Michael is great at listening to what I want to learn, and then teaching it to me in a way that I can understand easily. Also, he's very patient when there's a skill / technique that I'm trying to figure out how to master.

Dr. Merkel is the first tutor we have come across that is honest, forthright and actually TEACHES my daughter what she needs to know to reach her goals. He doesn't just tell her what he thinks she wants to hear to get her to come back next week. He's the real deal. He is a gentle corrector while being stern enough to instill what is necessary to succeed. The difference in her after four weeks with the Doc is amazing when compared to the last EIGHT YEARS she has been playing without his tutelage. We cannot say enough about him at this point and are thankful to have found such an expert!

Bobby S.

Brooklyn, NY

The trombone is a colorful and exciting instrument played in many styles of music throughout the world, from jazz and classical to funk and soul to reggae, afro-beat, and Latin American music. In addition to covering the basic technical requirements of the instrument, I'm particularly interested in the many genres in which the trombone can be found, and I like to focus on the styles of music that most interest and challenge my students. I began playing soprano trombone over ten years ago, and I have taught tenor trombone privately and in public school programs for several years. I encourage the use of long tones, air support, and brass calisthenics to improve tone, increase range and endurance, and work towards greater flexibility.

About Bobby

I am a jazz trumpeter, improviser, and composer as well as an avid listener and enthusiastic educator. I maintain an active performance schedule playing improvised music as well as funk, soul, afro-beat, reggae, hip-hop, and American folk music. In addition to trumpet, I have experience performing and recording on slide trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, and french horn. I write and arrange music for my own groups and regularly write and record horn arrangements for folk, pop, and reggae groups. I have attended Berklee College of Music and Ithaca College, and I have a Master's degree in jazz tr
umpet performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.

I have over nine years of experience working with students ages 7 to adult. I have worked both from my home studio and though several public and community music school programs including the Hudson Arts Alliance in Hudson, MA, the Kittredge Elementary School in North Andover, MA, and the Performing Arts Center of Metro West in Framingham, MA. I have studied jazz performance with trumpet greats John McNeil and Walter White, improvisation with jazz gurus David Schumacher and Jerry Bergonzi, and George Russell's Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization with master composer and theorist Ben Schwendener.

As an educator, my aim is to inspire in my students an enthusiasm for the artistic performance of music of any style. I strive to convey my own excitement for the art to young trumpeters and improvisers, and I have worked to encourage self-motivation and a longstanding interest in musical self-expression in elementary through high school students and adults. I have experience performing many styles of music from jazz and experimental improvised music to funk, reggae, and afro-beat, and I use my knowledge of divergent genres to encourage creative experimentation and convey the expressive artistic elements shared by all music. As an improviser I am particularly interested in teaching the theory and philosophy of spontaneous composition and musical communication.

Abdulrahman A.

New York, NY

Major focus on the technical aspects of the instrument.
Major focus on understanding music.
Learning how to develop routines for individual growth.
Perfecting solo repertoire.
Developing stronger jazz improvisation.

About Abdulrahman

Hi! I am a trombone player fluent in both Jazz and Classical music. I have developed my foundation for the instrument by studying with principal trombonist of the Metropolitan opera, Weston Sprott, for 4 years. If we were to study (whether it was for trombone, tuba, or baritone students) we would work on building a solid technical foundation and start developing repertoire for auditions and for stimulating your growth. Jazz students I have will also spend time building technical foundation but will also be taught jazz starting from where there knowledge stands. I am strong in classical theory
and ear training as well from 6 years of intense study. Students of all ages welcome.
Me- I am currently at the Manhattan School of Music on a full scholarship studying jazz trombone as well as classical trombone. Music is a passion to me and I am willing to give to those who seek. I do not play games when it comes to bringing students to their highest level so be prepared for intense lessons.
