Amber R.

Blue Bell, PA

Since 2008 I have maintained an active music studio teaching both violin and viola! My lessons are designed around you and your goals for music. I use a combination of Suzuki method and traditional (meaning you'll learn how to read music right away if you can't already) My lessons are catered to your needs, but warm ups, scales, etudes and repertoire are the building blocks of my lessons. Technique is a huge part of the way I teach--so you'll definitely get a solid understanding of how to play beautifully and accurately! I'm a relaxed and gentle teacher, and I'm never going to have anything but a smile on my face, so there's no need to feel stressed or nervous.

About Amber

Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 2013
Masters of Music in Viola Performance in progress at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 2015

Ms. R. began her studies on violin at an early age. After studying violin for 10 years, she made the switch to viola and never looked back! She performs internationally--most recently traveling to the Isle of Man for the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition as a finalist to compete in the 2013 competition (this is one of the two international competitions in the world for viola!). In July of 2014,
Ms. R. will be returning to perform at the Interharmony International Music Festival in Arcidosso, Italy. She has studied as well as performed in Shanghai, Beijing and many other cities across China. Ms. R. is currently a graduate student at Temple University in Viola Performance as well as a freelance musician and private teacher of the violin and viola. Her principle teachers include international viola soloist, Hong Mei Xiao and Kerri Ryan of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Other interests in no particular order include ancient history, philosophy, astronomy, Earth science, veganism, quantum physics, traveling, spirituality, anything interesting and following her heart always.

When we first meet, I'll ask you to play me something so I can get a feel for where you are...whether its a scale or a piece you have been playing. If you don't know anything that's fine too! My lessons are designed around you so every lesson is a different depending on the student, however, below is an example of the materials generally covered.

Example Lesson
1. Warm up (scale, open strings, or finger exercises)
Address technical issues--tone production, posture and set up, various bow exercises, intonation, etc.
2. Positions
3. Etude
4. Repertoire
5. Recap

It might sound like a lot--but don't worry I'll have a smile on my face the whole time and be working with you and encouraging you to do your best!

After 3-6 months:
Read notes (if you can't when you first come)
Count rhythms
Have a correct set up
Full tone
Developed ear
Scales
Greater finger facility
Repertoire

*** Studio Equipment ***
Stand, Metronome, Tuner, Music (but eventually you will have your own) You will need to provide your own instrument.

My preferred teaching methods are Suzuki and Sassmannshaus, Mark O'Connor Fiddle Book (violin and viola)

Recital Opportunities
Studio recitals are held biannually in December and June! They are a great chance to perform for friends and family, as well as meet the rest of the studio. You do not have to perform, but are certainly encouraged to : )
(Location varies, but usually they are held at a local church or university)

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Folk

Amber is a great Violin/Viola teacher and has been very knowledgeable and helpful! Amber hones in on where a student needs improvement in their playing and explains in a way that's easy to understand how to improve. Lessons are always fun and you can tell Amber enjoys teaching!

I've played brass instruments throughout High School and decided to attempt to teach myself the Violin after I graduated College. After almost a year of struggling I started to take lessons with Amber and she quickly helped me improved my form and technique with my left and right hand, obtain proper equipment, and provide exercises on what to practice to continue improving. I have noticed a drastic improvement since I started taking lessons with Amber and I highly recommend her as your Violin or Viola teacher!

Stephen R.

Aston, PA

Typically, I use the Suzuki and Strictly Strings books for beginner students, and I will then advance to etude studies such as Wolfarht and Sevick in addition to the Suzuki sequels for my intermediate students. Lastly, I will add Introducing the Positions, Mazas, Josephine Trott Double Stops, and solo concertos to my advanced students.

About Stephen

Stephen began violin lessons at age three. When his family relocated to Parrish, Florida in 1999, he joined the Florida West Coast Youth Symphony at age six and performed with them for six consecutive years, serving as concert master and assistant concert master. He then auditioned for The Venice Symphony and was accepted at age thirteen, the 2006-2007 season. He has performed with them for three consecutive seasons. In addition, he has also performed with the Sarasota Pops for two seasons from 2006 to 2008. He then joined The South Shore Symphony Orchestra in 2010, and performed with them for
their first five concerts and has served as principal second violin. He also has joined Anna Marina Island Concert Chorus and Orchestra and has performed with them for the 2010-2011 season. In February of 2011, he relocated to the South Philly suburbs and is currently performed with the Delaware County Symphony and the Rose Tree Pops. Throughout the years, Stephen has performed with Elicia in a number of events, including weddings, Christmas shows, and entertainment at restaurants such as the 800 Bay Restaurant and Club.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons offer an extensive education in technique, musicality, music theory, and most importantly, effective practice methods that increase capability and skill rapidly. I tailor my lessons specifically according to the student's abilities and strengths, while incorporating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

After a few months, my students acquire a well rounded knowledge and feel for the violin and classical music and appreciate the art and beauty music brings to life. They are always strongly impacted and inspired to pursue and achieve higher goals and activities.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In the music room there is a piano and music stands, and music available for purchase if necessary.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would bring my own instrument, but would expect my students to have an instrument, stand (or a piano is fine), music (if it is not a first lesson) and a willingness to learn!

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical violin, and I have worked with the Suzuki Method, but I am also very open to other methods and schools. I also teach varied styles of violin such as fiddle.

As a violin teacher, I am impressed by his ability to work with a variety of age groups and skill levels. He relates well to children and brings joy and humor to every lesson, while explaining the mechanics and the physics behind the technical aspect of music to more mature students.

I highly recommend Stephen to anyone who has a desire to learn the violin and a passion for music!

As an adult student, Stephen provides patience, guidence, and timely prompts. A relaxed style that keeps one form getting tense and frustrated!

Nice location as well! I would highly recommend anyone in the area to take from Stephen!

Amanda B.

West Chester, PA

I have been teaching violin for the past five years. Technique, rhythm and confidence building are my main focuses for violin students. I aim to give all my students well rounded musical knowledge about theory, music history and musical terminology.

About Amanda

I am currently studying at West Chester University of Pennsylvania majoring in Violin Performance, with oboe as my minor instrument. I perform with the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Baroque Ensemble and many other small ensembles on campus. I am also an active performer in the local area, and I especially enjoy playing in operas and musical theater. I have experience playing classical, fiddle and rock genres, with my focus being classical. I have been furthering my teaching skills through American String Teachers Association membership, Suzuki training, and pedagogy s
tudy at the Starling-Delay Symposium on Violin Studies held at The Julliard School.

I work to help students create and achieve their musical goals. Every student goes home with a list of points covered in their lesson so they know exactly what must be practiced for the upcoming lessons. This list helps students practice in a more focused fashion so they can improve as steadily and quickly as possible. I customize my teaching style for each student to ensure that they get the most out of lessons. Students with longer lessons (45min or more) can benefit from music theory workbooks and games which I incorporate into the lessons. My goal is to make every lesson fun and challenging for my students!

I give my students multiple performance opportunities each year. The past two years I had a formal spring recitals where my students had the experience of playing with an accompanist in a recital hall. Another performance opportunity I offered in the past was a more casual Duet Day where my students and I performed duets for their family and the community in a park. Of course, these opportunities change from year to year, but the emphasis is always on having fun in performance!

Emma tailors the lesson to your needs. I'm a fast learner so Emma ramped up the difficulty of the lessons and assignments accordingly. She's also been in music for a very long time since she was a child.
