Carolyn B.

Cary, NC

About Carolyn

I am a pianist and theorist who is enthusiastic about helping you learn more about music! I have a Bachelors of Music Performance from Appalachian State University and a Masters of Music Theory from B
owling Green State University. Music is one of my passions, a passion I would love to share with you!

I have experience with classical, classic, jazz, and Broadway music, among other genres. My performance and scholarly studies were primarily classical, but not limited to classical music.

Whether you pursue performance, scholarship, a greater appreciation of music, or simply a fun experience, I will help you reach your goals! None of these is exclusive, as all of them should be fun!

*** Lesson Details ***
I prefer to teach in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where the student can ask questions and offer opinions without fear. I am a patient and encouraging teacher, though I do expect students to prepare for lessons and improve over time. Lessons and curricula are tailored to the individual, depending on the student's goals. Should those goals change over the course of his/her study, the curriculum and lesson format will reflect that change. I believe in a well-rounded education, incorporating not only memorization or sight-reading (for example), but the underlying theories and relevant historical information. Most importantly, I will endeavor to make lessons enjoyable as well as educational for all involved!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide sight-reading/singing materials, handouts, and copies of music. I expect the student to provide his/her own instrument, textbook, and staff paper.

*** Specialties ***
Music Theory/Aural Skills: tonal through post-tonal theory, including counterpoint, part-writing, Roman numeral analysis, set theory; tonal and atonal sight singing (with solfege, numbers, and European letter names), rhythmic and melodic dictation, chord series

Piano: primarily tonal music (Baroque through Romantic), sight-reading, show tunes, popular songs

Excellent piano teacher!! Very patient, kind, reliable and communicates very well with my 10 yo son. She is so enthusiastic and has really gotten my son interested in music, despite that he is very shy. I have been impressed with how quickly my son has learned to play the piano in just a few months. We have been so thrilled with Carolyn that our other two children are to start lessons this month!!

Samantha G.

Cleveland, OH

About Samantha

Hi! My name is Samantha, and I'm currently a junior at Case Western Reserve University, where I'm majoring in flute performance as well as international studies. I've been studying music, specifically
flute, for 12 years and counting, and I dabble in piccolo, alto saxophone, clarinet, voice, piano, and pennywhistle. If I can play it, I enjoy it, and if I can’t play it yet I usually enjoy it even more!

I've participated in and helped run a myriad of ensembles, from simple classical quintets to 70-piece marching bands--so whatever type of music my students want to learn, I'm ready to coach them through. I take a holistic approach in my lessons, tailoring them to each student, and incorporating elements of theory, history, and healthy practicing techniques as we go. Whether you are getting ready to audition for an advanced group, or are just starting out, I'm ready to listen and help you reach your goals!

Having explored, studied, and performed a variety of musical genres (Baroque, Classical, jazz, Broadway, modern, etc), I own a large library of repertoire and have something to fit most any student's interests. I'm passionate about bringing the joy of music to my community, and as a classically-trained flutist, I also have a solid grounding in theory and pedagogy--not to mention experience with how auditions and concerts are run. I hope to teach my students a little of all these things, but also about the parts of music that aren't technical: commitment, story-telling, and artistry.

Do you have a need for speed? Below, piano teacher Ryan C. shares some piano finger exercises that will help you increase speed when playing the piano... What makes a great pianist fun to watch? Is it his or her sense of musicality and his or her ability to play gorgeous music with apparent ease? I think both. However, there is another skill that really makes a pianist great…speed! Have you ever watched an amazing pianist play ridiculously fast and wondered to yourself: “How in the
In the Pits: How to Succeed as an Orchestral Pianist
Being a piano player may seem like a very solitary way to go about learning an instrument. As a piano student, you may yearn to make music with others, and if you're naturally drawn toward group music making, it may be that you already study an orchestral instrument, or sing with a choir. You may also have extended your piano training to accompany some of your friends for concerts or exams, or explored the wide variety of chamber music repertoire available involving the piano. However, had you c
3 Tips for Playing Loudly (and Beautifully) at the Piano
Piano dynamics indicate more than just playing softly or loudly -- there's actual technique involved that you'll need to learn! Here, New York, NY piano teacher Nadia B. shares her tips to keep in mind...   You're approaching a passage with the word 'fortissimo' written on the music, and you're building up to a musical climax. As you feel the power of the music, you want to play loudly, but when you do, it doesn't sound as beautiful as you imagined. Playing loudly at the piano is easy
