Priscilla D.

Silver Spring, MD

About Priscilla

I love to mentor young creatives between the ages of 5-17 in music and the arts and I thrive in being personable with each of my little musicians. I believe I'm 100% qualified in educating youth in music theory, piano, guitar and visual arts. I'm a versatile professional who truly loves to teach and learn music and visual arts. I believe in the importance of adapting my teachings to each students needs. Through my 15 years of studying and teaching Music in both here in the US and in Brazil I've come to realize with the support of my mentors, peers and my family that my goal is to educate child
ren in the arts for the enrichment of culture in our community here in the DMV metro region. It's vital to me to teach arts alternatively and I'll do so for always with great passion that some say is contagious! So get on board with me and let's Make Music and Create Art!

*** Lesson Details ***
I have an easy-going, yet structured approach that allows each student to achieve results effectively at his or her own pace. I believe that there is a connection between music, movement and language that intertwine and support each other through the development process. I specialize in teaching all kinds of styles from Classical, Pop,Bossa Nova in guitar, piano and music theory lessons. I Love to emphasize various playing techniques, music theory, ear training, music reading, and more. The materials for teaching varies.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, Books, Metronome, Guitar

*** Travel Equipment ***
note book, assigned books and sheet music assigned

*** Specialties ***
Guitar, Piano, Music Theory and Performance is what we do !
My main goal is to present students with simplified arrangements of standard repertoire concentrating on sight-reading and writing composition as well as playing all sorts of variety of music genres. Use of the metronome is needed, and very often the exercises defy the tendency to play by ear or in the position pattern. We will focus 1/2 of the lesson on repertoire and 1/2 the lesson on the technique. I have my students let me know via email what songs they would like to work on for the weeks lesson a few days prior to the lesson, then I cater the technical study during the lesson to help them learn the song we are working on. It has been proven to be very effective and makes the technique and theory are less uninteresting.
Through good vibes we all learn and grow tremendously so with that said come and Jam with me.

Priscilla was a very enthusiastic and welcoming instructor for my 6-year old who has never taken piano lessons before. She also had a nice way of introducing her to the piano.

Yelena has been a wonderful piano teacher. Always cheerful and patient and has been flexible with my crazy schedule. I appreciate that she took the time to challenge me and encourage me as I got started on learning to play the piano - something I've wanted to do for years! Even though I can no longer continue (due to my work schedule), she's given me lots to practice at home and hopefully I'll be able to return later. Yelena is the best!

Dennis B.

Bethesda, MD

About Dennis

I have been teaching guitar for 25 years in the Washington DC metro area. I work with students 12 years of age and up, but I am especially experienced at teaching adult students regardless of whether they are beginners or have previous guitar experience. I have performed in acoustic Celtic, new age, funk, progressive rock, fusion and contemporary jazz groups and am currently performing regularly as a solo acoustic guitarist. I have composed over 40 works for solo guitar as well as numerous pieces for small jazz bands. I have played on numerous CDs including my most recent solo CD 'DARK MATTER'
.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor the lesson materials to suit the interest of the student but I am dedicated to teaching students at any level to learn to better understand the fundamentals of the language of music. My teaching focuses on critical fundamentals of guitar technique including chords, scales and rhythm guitar playing as well as the art of improvisation. A significant amount of time in the lessons is spent actually playing with the students so that the technical concepts are put to use in real music situations. To further the student's understanding of music I frequently teach elements of music theory to those who are interested.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have guitars and amps available for student use although I prefer that the student bring their own instrument. I also have all the needed accessories, cables, stands etc.

*** Specialties ***
Adult students (and older teenagers ) whether beginners or experienced are a particular specialty of mine. Adult learners want to be treated as adults and often times benefit greatly from a more mentor oriented approach to teaching. I like to describe myself as both a teacher and a coach so as to emphasize that the student and I are on the same team sharing the goal of improving their guitar playing and musicianship. We are both on the same path of musical discovery. I am probably just farther along on that path with insights and knowledge that will hopefully help them along their way.

After the first lesson I can tell this is going to go great! Dennis is very personable and easy to talk to, and communicate with. It is immediately apparent that he has a wealth of knowledge not just about guitar, but about music theory in general and I am so excited for what I will learn!

Also, he has a lovely home and his wife is so nice :) I felt right at home.

I definitely recommend Dennis to anyone who is considering lessons.

Rachel S.

Elkridge, MD

About Rachel

Hi! My name is Rachel, and I have been teaching lessons professionally for over 8 years now. My primary instruments are voice and piano, and I also teach music theory/ear training/musicianship skills. I earned my degree in vocal performance from James Madison University, where I taught lessons to non-music majors as well as tutored general music for the student population. I would describe my teaching style as fun and relaxed, with a strong emphasis on healthy technique. I believe that all students should have a strong technical foundation, and that begins on day one. Genres I teach include cl
assical, musical theatre, pop, and accompanying skills for pianists. I can also help with audition prep on both instruments. I look forward to meeting with you!

Just a side note- due to an EXTREMELY demanding schedule, I do ask for flexibility when scheduling. GENERALLY, I can fit new students into my Sunday schedule, or potentially Saturday evening, depending on location. Most of my students are located in the Ellicott City/Fulton/Laurel area, so it is easier for me to be flexible with those locations. For weekdays, I am typically available late evenings. If you are a student who would like lessons during weekday mornings/early afternoons, I have the most flexibility!!

Thanks so much!

Ms. Rachel Sandler is an Exceptional Teacher and knows exactly the needs of my wife (Ms. Rachel J. Saunders and I (Dr. Lewis O. Saunders, PHD) were students of Ms. Sandler for three sessions and what we learned about music was absolutely great! .

When we were assigned to Ms. Sandler we could not read music now we can not only read music but we can determine the pitch etc.. Ms. Sandler only had us for only three sessions because the pervious two sessions were conducted by Alex who had much to be desired along with the practice of being honest.

We will certainly request more sessions with Ms. Sandler because she is an excellent teacher.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Rachel J. Saunders and Dr. Lewis O. Saunders, PHD
