Kathy B.

Detroit, MI

About Kathy

I am a patient, enthusiastic teacher in the following areas: piano, violin, cello, drums, music history, and music theory. I have taught vocal and instrumental music in both Catholic and Public schools, and in after-school programs, for 20 years, and have been giving private lessons for 9 years. I enjoy teaching music to all age students, and especially enjoy watching my students grow in their music ability.

I received my Bachelor of Arts from Marygrove College in Detroit in Language Arts with minors in Music Education and History, and my Masters Degree from Wayne State University in Educati
on with emphasis on English as a Second Language and Sign Language for the Deaf. I have studied Music Education for K-5 at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan.
I am also a published author of five children's books. You can find them through my publisher Xlibris. com and they are called Peggy, The Three-Some Book 2, The Writer's Corner Book 3, The Golden Nugget Book 4, The 1940 Diary Book 7. When you go onto their web-site put in my pen name of N.K.Beckley and they should come up. Emily Book 5 will be out sometime in March 2017 and books 6,8.9.10 should be out by Fall of 2017. These are books for students in grades 4th through 8th grades and are also interactive books. I hope you enjoy them.
I also tutor for Take Lessons Grades 1 to Grade 8 all subjects except higher level Math.

*** Lesson Details ***
Piano: All students start out learning both Treble and Bass Clefs, and their lines and spaces. Each student then starts to learn their major scales with both right and left hand for piano. They also learn the note values, and are able to put them together in a song. I use Michael Aaron curriculum, which takes in all of the above and their technique lessons. I use all the Michael Aaron Book One, Lessons, Theory, Technic, and Performance Books for any student that is age 6 and above and I would ask that parents would buy them from Anderson Music in Dearborn, Michigan as well as any other lesson books listed below before they come to my home for lessons.

Cello: Using String Builder and Strictly Strings, the students learn the bass clef, lines and spaces, scales, and songs. Students will learn how to hold their bow correctly.I have played cello in the Waterford New Horizons Concert Band for over six years. I have also been the only cellist they have as a member of the band.

Violin: Using String Builder and Strictly Strings, students will learn lines and spaces of the treble clef, note values, major scales, and songs. Students will learn how to hold their bow correctly.

Drums: Using Rockin’ Rhythm Raps, and using drum pads instead of drums, students will learn the correct way to hold drum sticks and the rhythms of all the notes in the treble and bass clefs. They will also learn songs to play.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Upright piano w/ seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy teaching beginners in any area, because then you can see how far they have come at the end of the year.

Kathy has worked wonders with my piano lessons. In about a year and half of lessons Kathy has added scales and exercises along with musical selections designed to enhance specific skills, plus has worked with me on select piano works which I find interesting and challenging. My abilities and quality of playing been steadily improving. She is always positive and uplifting yet she still can point out areas of playing quality which require work. She gears lessons and advancement of difficulty to my specific rate of improvement. I couldn't ask for better and and am looking forward to continued progress over time for my improved musicianship.

Kathy is a patient and creative teacher who has provided me with continuous improvement in my piano playing through the application of music theory and basic piano exercises such as scales and arpeggios plus piano pieces which challenge and improve my ability. She has produced a marked improvement in my piano playing over the course of my lessons and I look forward to continuing that with her for the future.

Teachers are nice, (specifically Ms. Patty and Ms. Linda), very professional, not or not so strict, not intimidating and very patient to the students. Both of them have very good experience in their own field of music knowledge and are very willing to share or pass on their expertise. With that, kids are always motivated to learn and attend every session, not to mention the rewards, student (i believe for younger kids only)can redeem for the good performance after a certain period. Location is good, studio is cool, cozy and very clean.

I love Viviana!! She makes you feel very comfortable throughout the entire lesson. She tries to help you relax if you've had a long day and to loosen up and prepare for singing. The lessons are always very fun, full of lots of jokes, yet very productive and helpful as well. Amazing instructor!!

I am happy to share my good fortune of finding a remarkable voice instructor, Viviana Garabello. I have been singing my whole life, and at 66 years old I believe Viviana to be the first person to ever help me understand how my voice actually works. In addition she is able to listen to me and tell me exactly what I need to do to produce the sound that will allow my own personal voice to come out.

I have sung in numerous groups throughout my life including the Dearborn Community Chorale, Vanguard Voices and Brass and The Henry Ford Community College Chorale; and cantored at St. Thomas Aquinas church for 12 years. I performed solos and lead parts in all of those groups, however, I was never able to consistently produce the voice that I wanted to during that time.

I am now convinced that I have met in Viviana someone who can help me accomplish this goal. Because I have developed many bad vocal habits my challenge is to create new techniques that will allow me to develop new muscle memory to replace the old restrictive muscle memory that prevents me from allowing my voice to flow forth naturally.

Most importantly Viviana is able to listen to my voice and help me to listen to my voice to identify what technique I need to employ to produce a desired sound. She has a comprehensive knowledge of the physical structure of the body that produces sound and is able to communicate to me exactly what I need to do for me to produce an unencumbered sound that brings forth my true voice.

I now work on breath support, tone development and vocal music every day because there is nothing more satisfying to me than singing freely without self imposed restrictions in my voice. My quality of life has improved immeasurably because of my association with Viviana.
