Happy Valentines day! There are lots of things and people we LOVE. I like to focus on those good feelings, and music that uplifts and enriches. We are really working on our OWN music compositions this month.

Goals: Since I am also a Life Coach, we really focus on how to accomplish our hopes and desires. We begin by weekly, then monthly and even a yearly goal.

Each week we also focus on something in my STUDENT PAL - mnemonic. Another is TECHNIQUE. Technique is the ability to have proper position, wrist-lifts and finger curve as well as Theoretic knowledge and application.

I
started giving out lickable gold stars, you know, the old-fashioned kind? They are for those students who mark their lesson sheet and come prepared... They really seem to enjoy that, and I adore the nostalgia!

It is a great week when students are nearly all prepared and ready for their lessons. This makes both Coach and student more effective and the time together more enjoyable.

Perhaps you are reading this with both a little excitement and a little concern. Finding the right person for your or your student can be intimidating. A short introduction follows so that you know a little about me and my philosophy which can assist you make an informed decision. If we are a good fit, lessons and learning progress more joyfully.

I have been teaching music, performing music and enjoying music since I was a tiny three-year old. My first piano lessons were at age seven. I have since taught the students of former students! How fun is that?

Music has blessed my life in countless ways and given me opportunities I'd never dreamed of. Teaching at the Young Artists Conservatory of Music; Singing in Carnegie Hall, Performing across Europe and teaching the best students for over 25 years has been a delight.

I believe strongly that those who spend their time and resources for musical education are some of the brightest and most intelligent people around. Each of my students have their own individual goals and reasons for taking music lessons, which we revisit monthly. I believe that my role is to be a support and tool for them/you to accomplish the goals set, working with music that delights and educates.

You want the best teacher, who offers information, example, practice and performance opportunities and then gets out of the way of the student's own "voice" (whether playing or singing) so that they can be free to create their own style.

*** Lesson Details ***
In our lessons, we work with a predictable schedule of balance. We have weekly exercises to make strong fingers and or voices, and technique and theory practice to hone skills that will improve our performances, whether they are for others or for our own benefit. Each student of piano can learn how to create and write their own music in time, choose their own pieces to work on, and have a say in their classical and performance goals.

We have a program of advancement, so you and your loved ones can visually see your progress and measure your skills, complete with awards and trophies.

What you learn, has everything to do with your commitment. Practice doesn't make perfect, Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Learning the piano ought to be a JOY. I believe in playing the piano, not 'practicing' it. Enjoy what you do, and you'll do it longer and with celebration instead of duty.

Over the years I have dabbled in most methods, but finally come to use my own syllabus and musicianship. I can easily adapt to your favourite if that is your desire. I specialize in a total music education, not merely in learning notes. It is like looking in a mirror and only seeing eyes and skin. Music has many facets and we discover all of them.

This is the first time I take on learning Korean. I searched for a lot of information trying to find instructors in my area and online. I came across take lessons online and was still unsure weather to sign up or not. So, they had profiles on the instructors that were available to teach. All these instructors have wonderful qualifications but my concern was finding an instructor that was available on my one day off. Very grateful that Mr. Seongmo was available and accepted me as his student. Korean is different from other other languages that I have taken. Mr. Seongmo is very patient with me, very encouraging and challenges me at the same time. If you are thinking of learning Korean, I recommend Mr. Seongmo!

I took Abram's English research project class when I was doing a summer program at UCD. He's a great teacher, always very helpful, passionate, and you can tell how much he loves to teach. I always looked forward to his class because he knew very well how to create a comfortable and fun learning atmosphere for all international students.

I am a music lover first and foremost, and have a passion for sharing music with other people. I have been playing piano for many years, and have taught privately in both California and Florida. I have recently moved back to Sacramento, after graduating from UC Berkeley, and am excited to build my studio here (I recently added a grand piano). I have a firm foundation in classical studies, having studied for many years privately with diverse teachers. I also have a passion for composing, and I have written, recorded, and produced an album of my own material. I have written songs for others, and
have performed in public as a solo performer and as a back-up musician. I also play the French Horn. I believe music education should be fun, and it should not just be about learning notes; music is interactive, enlightening, and each of us has a personal identity and contribution to bring to it. I speak Italian, so can easily help with all those pesky Italian musical terms that one must learn. :) I also co-organize an Italian language group in Sacramento and can assist with Italian instruction.

I have taught using various methods before, and as such I like to identify the needs of the student and goals at the onset before committing to specific material. I have had success with the Bastien Method, Faber series, and I like many lines by Alfred. If a student has a preference, I will work with them in finding the best plan of action. The goal is a strong fundamental musical education that keeps them interested and engaged. Adults have different needs than beginners. Alfred and others have great books geared towards them. In addition to specific series or teaching books, I like to find solo pieces that interest the student to help them build a repertoire that goes beyond basic technical and exercise-type pieces to encompass a variety of pieces that they actually enjoy playing.

"To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable", at least according to Beethoven. I believe this wholeheartedly. This is a great summary of my approach to music. By passion I do not mean simply overplaying pieces and forcing fake emotion into them, rather I mean passion in the way of finding the heart and soul of a piece of music, understanding it, and being able to translate that into your performance of it. Nothing is more gratifying than a student falling in love with a piece of music, overcoming the difficulties in learning it, and conquering the performance of it. This is what the joy of music is all about. I believe in setting attainable goals, rewarding accomplishments, and that attentive listening and practice are keystones to success. Pedagogy is important, but it should never stifle creativity or discourage new ways of approaching things.
