Marsha K.

Roseville, CA

About Marsha

This week I started giving out lockable gold stars, you know, the old-fashioned kind? They are for those students who mark their lesson sheet and come prepared... They really seem to enjoy that, and
I adore the nostalgia!

It is a great week when students are nearly all prepared and ready for their lessons. This makes both Coach and student more effective and the time together more enjoyable.

Each week we focus on something in my STUDENT PAL - mnemonic. One choice is Articulation. Articulation is how you press the keys, whether short (staccato) smoothly (legato) or accented. Vocal students as well worked on their diaphragm and getting sounds out in a variety of ways.

Perhaps you are reading this with both a little excitement and a little concern. Finding the right person for your or your student can be intimidating. A short introduction follows so that you know a little about me and my philosophy which can assist you make an informed decision. If we are a good fit, lessons and learning progress more joyfully.

I have been teaching music, performing music and enjoying music since I was a tiny three-year old. My first piano lessons were at age seven. I have since taught the students of former students! How fun is that?

Music has blessed my life in countless ways and given me opportunities I'd never dreamed of. Teaching at the Young Artists Conservatory of Music; Singing in Carnegie Hall, Performing across Europe and teaching the best students for over 25 years has been a delight.

I believe strongly that those who spend their time and resources for musical education are some of the brightest and most intelligent people around. Each of my students have their own individual goals and reasons for taking music lessons, which we revisit monthly. I believe that my role is to be a support and tool for them/you to accomplish the goals set, working with music that delights and educates.

You want the best teacher, who offers information, example, practice and performance opportunities and then gets out of the way of the student's own "voice" (whether playing or singing) so that they can be free to create their own style.

*** Lesson Details ***
In our lessons, we work with a predictable schedule of balance. We have weekly exercises to make strong fingers and or voices, and technique and theory practice to hone skills that will improve our performances, whether they are for others or for our own benefit. Each student of piano can learn how to create and write their own music in time, choose their own pieces to work on, and have a say in their classical and performance goals.

We have a program of advancement, so you and your loved ones can visually see your progress and measure your skills, complete with awards and trophies.

What you learn, has everything to do with your commitment. Practice doesn't make perfect, Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Learning the piano ought to be a JOY. I believe in playing the piano, not 'practicing' it. Enjoy what you do, and you'll do it longer and with celebration instead of duty.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano - upright; CD player; Music stands; Dozens of music books and lesson materials; flash cards; computer and music writing program; mic and mirror, syllabus.

*** Travel Equipment ***
No travel.

*** Specialties ***
Over the years I have dabbled in most methods, but finally come to use my own syllabus and musicianship. I can easily adapt to your favourite if that is your desire. I specialize in a total music education, not merely in learning notes. It is like looking in a mirror and only seeing eyes and skin. Music has many facets and we discover all of them.

About Laura

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, and a Master's Degree in Secondary Science Education-Biology. I am certified in the state of Florida. The first lesson will consist of diagnostics s
o that I can better tailor my teaching to your child. For my reading students I assist with phonics and comprehension. I use high interest text selections to ensure that the child will actually enjoy what they are reading, in addition to improving their skills. Students who require math instruction, I like to revisit prerequisites. I find that mistakes are made in the lower levels of math, which makes learning math at the higher levels more difficult. If children need science instruction, I can help with re-teaching the material and clarifying any confusing or complicated concepts to ensure the material is clear and easily understood. My methods for language arts and history are similar to science.

Joan B.

Carmichael, CA

About Joan

I have 18 years experience teaching high school Spanish and have lived and worked in Spain. I am a UC Berkeley graduate with a minor in Italian. My passion is the study of foreign languages. I have al
so studied French and Arabic and am able to understand the difficulties of language learning from both the student and teacher's perspective. I am adept at explaining concepts in a clear and concise manner and targeting the student's specific difficulties. Students have found my tutoring helpful in improving their performance on tests, increasing their ability to comprehend and respond in Spanish and/or developing conversational Spanish when traveling to a Spanish-speaking country. I can provide the student with useful classroom strategies and study skills to make language learning easy and fun at all levels.

Clarissa B.

Auburn, CA

About Clarissa

I focus on the student. My approach and materials will vary depending on the progress, past experience and interests of the student. I want her or him to want to learn. My hobbies include backpacking,
hiking, travel, reading, and language learning.

I am working on my Masters in Secondary English and currently hold an Associates in ECE, this combined with my extensive experience with the AP system and the time that I lived in and attended université in France make me qualified to tutor in these subjects and the satellite subject areas such as diction, study skills, reading and writing. I have experience learning four foreign languages in addition to English. It is my love of the learning process, patience and passion for these subjects, however, that are most efficacious in the tutoring process. Best of luck with your studies!

Clarissa was really thoughtful and attentive to my needs. She checked in with me at the end of every lesson to figure out what worked for me and make new goals for the next lesson.
She was really understanding about my accent (which wasn't great). I didn't realize accent could be fixed, but she showed me how to make the right sounds and was really patient.

I could really see how much better I was getting with her help and the way she sets up lessons, I could use the class materials and practice in between lessons.

I originally picked her because she was so affordable, but I am so glad I did now!
