Marsha K.

Roseville, CA

About Marsha

New year, new goals. Since I am also a Life Coach, we really focus on how to accomplish our hopes and desires. We begin by weekly, then monthly and even a yearly goal.

Each week we also focus on something in my STUDENT PAL - mnemonic. One choice is Articulation. Articulation is how you press the keys, whether short (staccato) smoothly (legato) or accented. Vocal students as well worked on their diaphragm and getting sounds out in a variety of ways.

I started giving out lickable gold stars, you know, the old-fashioned kind? They are for those students who mark their lesson sheet a
nd come prepared... They really seem to enjoy that, and I adore the nostalgia!

It is a great week when students are nearly all prepared and ready for their lessons. This makes both Coach and student more effective and the time together more enjoyable.

Perhaps you are reading this with both a little excitement and a little concern. Finding the right person for your or your student can be intimidating. A short introduction follows so that you know a little about me and my philosophy which can assist you make an informed decision. If we are a good fit, lessons and learning progress more joyfully.

I have been teaching music, performing music and enjoying music since I was a tiny three-year old. My first piano lessons were at age seven. I have since taught the students of former students! How fun is that?

Music has blessed my life in countless ways and given me opportunities I'd never dreamed of. Teaching at the Young Artists Conservatory of Music; Singing in Carnegie Hall, Performing across Europe and teaching the best students for over 25 years has been a delight.

I believe strongly that those who spend their time and resources for musical education are some of the brightest and most intelligent people around. Each of my students have their own individual goals and reasons for taking music lessons, which we revisit monthly. I believe that my role is to be a support and tool for them/you to accomplish the goals set, working with music that delights and educates.

You want the best teacher, who offers information, example, practice and performance opportunities and then gets out of the way of the student's own "voice" (whether playing or singing) so that they can be free to create their own style.

*** Lesson Details ***
In our lessons, we work with a predictable schedule of balance. We have weekly exercises to make strong fingers and or voices, and technique and theory practice to hone skills that will improve our performances, whether they are for others or for our own benefit. Each student of piano can learn how to create and write their own music in time, choose their own pieces to work on, and have a say in their classical and performance goals.

We have a program of advancement, so you and your loved ones can visually see your progress and measure your skills, complete with awards and trophies.

What you learn, has everything to do with your commitment. Practice doesn't make perfect, Practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.

Learning the piano ought to be a JOY. I believe in playing the piano, not 'practicing' it. Enjoy what you do, and you'll do it longer and with celebration instead of duty.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano - upright; CD player; Music stands; Dozens of music books and lesson materials; flash cards; computer and music writing program; mic and mirror, syllabus.

*** Travel Equipment ***
No travel.

*** Specialties ***
Over the years I have dabbled in most methods, but finally come to use my own syllabus and musicianship. I can easily adapt to your favourite if that is your desire. I specialize in a total music education, not merely in learning notes. It is like looking in a mirror and only seeing eyes and skin. Music has many facets and we discover all of them.

Joan B.

Carmichael, CA

About Joan

I have 18 years experience teaching high school Spanish and have lived and worked in Spain. I am a UC Berkeley graduate with a minor in Italian. My passion is the study of foreign languages. I have also studied French and Arabic and am able to understand the difficulties of language learning from both the student and teacher's perspective. I am adept at explaining concepts in a clear and concise manner and targeting the student's specific difficulties. Students have found my tutoring helpful in improving their performance on tests, increasing their ability to comprehend and respond in Spanish
and/or developing conversational Spanish when traveling to a Spanish-speaking country. I can provide the student with useful classroom strategies and study skills to make language learning easy and fun at all levels.

Mrs. Jen has been a violin teacher for our daughter for 3.5 years. She is an extremely qualified and talented musician who deeply cares about her students and is committed to teaching. She is kind and patient, but also effective and motivating. When our 8 year old daughter learned Mrs. Jen was moving she said, "I probably will never have as neat or special of a violin teacher as Mrs. Jen"- and she's right!

First lesson was fine. We took a few minutes to find each other in a cafe setting but as it was also a meet and greet session I wasn't too concerned about time. As it turns out Beth more than made up the time. She's very pleasant and easy to speak with. We went over my goals, simple traveler type words, phrases and questions, and a work schedule to cover the next several weeks. Beth told me how she was going to approach teaching me after listening to my goals. I'm looking forward to the next session where we can focus on learning the language.

Sara M.

West Sacramento, CA

About Sara

Hello, My name is Sara and my mother is Japanese from Kobe, Japan and my father is Caucasian American. I grew up speaking both Japanese and English and I now work as a bilingual, full-time actor in beautiful Northern California. I'm looking forward to working with you on reaching your goals for 2016! Whether you want to study acting or Japanese, I'd like to talk about what you wish to accomplish with our time together. Your goals are important to me and I wish to help support you on your journey towards achieving them.

I've been mentoring actors for the past four years and have have be
en teaching Japanese and English for 3 years. A friend suggested I start teaching online after I told him about my desire to offer affordable acting lessons to anyone who was passionate about it, but had no resources. So here I am and I'm also offering Japanese lessons since I know it can be hard to find a Japanese teacher/tutor as well.

I have a B.A. in Theatre Arts and a minor in Education from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana and have a certificate of completion from the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco for completing their Classical Acting Intensive course. In addition to my western training I was an apprentice at Theatre of Yugen where I studied the dramatic art of Noh and Kyogen theatre for 3 years.

I've also taught Japanese 101 during college as part of my course work for Teaching Japanese as a Second Language as well as beginner Japanese to 5-7 graders at a local elementary.

And I also was an assistant English teacher for 2 years in Japan teaching Junior High School and working as a primary visiting teacher for over 40 elementary schools. Although my work was to teach English, because of my Japanese ability, I often worked as a substitute teacher and also translated documents for the local City Hall.

I can't wait to meet you and to work with you on pursuing your 2015 aspirations!

Clarissa was really thoughtful and attentive to my needs. She checked in with me at the end of every lesson to figure out what worked for me and make new goals for the next lesson.
She was really understanding about my accent (which wasn't great). I didn't realize accent could be fixed, but she showed me how to make the right sounds and was really patient.

I could really see how much better I was getting with her help and the way she sets up lessons, I could use the class materials and practice in between lessons.

I originally picked her because she was so affordable, but I am so glad I did now!
