Cheryl C. Mount Tabor, NJ

About Cheryl

I have been a musician for over 25 years. I have a Bachelor of Music and have taught guitar for over 10 years. In addition to guitar, I'm a vocalist, composer and arranger as well as a music publisher. I actively perform as both a classical guitarist and singer-songwriter. I love teaching guitar and find it so exciting to see kids (and grown-ups!) learn an instrument and be part of the magic of creating music! The earliest age that I recommend for a child to start learning to read music is age 7. Learning an instrument teaches focus, develops self-direction and how to reach a goal, plus the added benefit of developing the brain for academic achievement. And, it's just plain FUN!! ***NOTES ABOUT SPECIAL NEEDS*** There are stairs to my home studio. Please take this into ...

Cheryl is an excellent teacher and I am so glad I started my guitar lessons with her. I have played guitar on my own for a few years but I felt stuck at my current level and wanted to expand my guitar skills. Cheryl is very patient and encouraging. The exercises she gives me are challenging but she teaches me everything I need to work on them and I am making so much progress. Cheryl is very knowledgeable about guitar and extremely qualified. I would strongly recommend her to any level guitar player!
Robert H. Cedar Knolls, NJ

About Robert

I started playing guitar at age 11, taking lessons at the local music studio in Hackensack, NJ. I became heavily influenced by The Beatles after hearing their music and as a teenager played in local rock groups, having some success being in the bands Jona's Ark and The Yorkshire Pudding, opening for artists Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, John Mayall and backing up Gary U.S. Bonds. I started playing piano at 19 when I took a group piano class in college. I attended Berklee College of Music and studied guitar with Bill Leavitt and Pat Metheny. That's where I started learning about all the great jazz artists from Duke Ellington to Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery to name a few. While at Berklee I also developed a love of the classical guitar and it's repertoire. After Berklee, I

Mr. Rob has been teaching my 6 yrs. old son piano for a few months at our home. He is reliable, patient, and an effective teacher. In a relatively short time, we were impressed at the progress our son had made. Our little one keeps a manuscript book with his practice assignments and has been able to play recognizable notes from children's songs with both hands. The 30 min. sessions are perfect for this age and go by both quickly and enjoyably. We are looking forward to more sessions and continued growth.

Reliable, patient, clear and "fun"

Robert has been reliable and patient with our 12 year old. I asked her opinion for this review and she said, "He shows me exactly what to do and makes it fun. I wish he taught my language arts class."

Rob does a great job understanding my objectives. He is always well prepared and his ability to create lessons that are enjoyable keeps me enthusiastic about playing the guitar. Starting from ground zero,I am not only learning how to play an instrument but I am learning how to read music as well.
Rosemary T. Hopatcong, NJ

About Rosemary

If you want to become an artist; if you want to sharpen your critical thinking skills, improve your multitasking, expand your mind's capacity for learning and be able to unleash the power of wordless self-expression... study the violin. At the tender age of five, I started a life-long love affair with the violin. Growing up in Westfield, NJ, I began my studies at the NJ Workshop for the Arts, and have since come full circle, serving on the faculty there to this day. I have a rich tapestry of experiences that contribute to the teacher and performer I am today, and in my students, I hope to light the spark that leads to a lifetime of musical memories. I graduated summa cum laude with a Music Performance degree from Montclair State University in 2006, and I've been teaching students of

Dan T. Rockaway, NJ

About Dan

I am a graduate of the Jazz Studies program at William Paterson University where I completed a degree in Jazz Performance. During my time at William Paterson, I studied privately with drumming greats such Horace Arnold, Bill Goodwin and Kevin Norton. I was also an active member of several different large and small ensembles under the direction of current jazz icons such as Mulgrew Miller, Paul Meyers, Chico Mendoza, Cecil Bridgewater, Bill Mobley, John Mosca, Rich DeRosa and Bill Goodwin. These days I am most commonly found freelancing both nationally and internationally with a number of artists in various musical settings. In the studio, I enjoy a blossoming career as a session drummer as well as maintaining a busy teaching schedule at Wayne Hills, Ridgewood, and Morris Hills High ...

A Great Teacher

I have been taking lessons with Dan now for two years and I have learned more then I could on my own. Dan is easily approachable and an all around good guy. He never has any problems with questions. He teaches advanced rhythms but also puts the fun in fundamentals. He has helped me immensely in all aspects of drumming and is a great teacher.

Very Happy Student

My son is nearing completion of his first set of five lessons with Dan T. My son, his father, and I are very pleased to have found this instructor. My 8 year old son says that Dan is easy to work with, and that "I learned so many things." He is always happy to go back for his next lesson. The studio arrangements accomodate a parent who can listen as the lesson proceeds. Dan is very gracious with his time. We are very pleased and are continuing our son's drum lessons with Dan.

Lessons with Dan T are an awesome experience

My son has been taking drum lessons with Dan T for 6 months and is having a phenomenal experience. He is encouraged to bring songs to lesson which he would like to learn. My son has a writing book and he can write out rhythms and then practice and learn them. It is not just reading music. This is a very interative experience. When it is time to do our chores and homework and practice drums the very first thing our son does is play his drums. He practices every day and for long periods of time because he is having fun.

I find Mike to be a professional. His understanding of the mechanics of vocalizing is an asset and his easygoing manner of getting it across an asset.

I have been singing w/ bands now for about 15 years and Mike has helped me understand how to maximize my range and power. I would highly recommend Mike for anyone looking to learn to sing for the first time and/or anyone looking to improve on their existing talents.

Mike's been great. I was a nervous new student, and he made me feel really comfortable from the get-go, and structured things so that I was proceeding at my own comfort level. Great input, and a great experience. Thanks Mike!

I've worked with Mike for over a year, he is great for adults who love rock and blues music. He has helped me become a much more confident player. Taking lessons with him was one of the best moves I could have made.
Chris B. Pompton Plains, NJ

About Chris

My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life. I started playing guitar when I was in my early teens and, like most kids, just thought it would be cool to play in a band and have fun. Along with my brother Jon (on drums), we immediately started to jam with some neighborhood friends and quickly honed our cover song skills. We then progressed towards writing original music and eventually formed a new band. As time went on, we both started listening to more complex styles of music and spent countless hours improving upon our playing chops to match the advanced techniques of our favorite musicians. The best lesson I've learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument, or ...

My 17 year old son and I have been taking weekly in-home lessons with Chris for about 4 months now. Gotta say Chris is AWESOME. My son is picking it up super fast, he definitely has ADD - especially with music. Chris keeps right up, they are playing some Ed Sheeran, Eagles, Sam Hunt, Tyler Farr - all over the map and all both have a blast. I have been plugging along a little slower and Chris is very patient. We are working on some FGL, Parmalee, Logan Mize (Can't get away from a good time), Toby Kieth (Red Solo Cup), we even did a little Carol of the Bells around Christmas. I have a changing schedule and Chris is very accommodating - even up to last minute - which I really appreciate! IF you are looking for a flexible, dynamic, friendly, and fun instructor (his place / Skype/ your place) Chris is your man. Full Disclosure: I did not know Chris before I found him on TakeLessons. I am not receiving anything for this review. My son and I are simply big fans of Chris!

Chris is a fantastic teacher. His approach to teaching makes sense and is very effective. My son is 10 and immediately had an excellent rapor with Chris.
Chris explained that he has several different ways of teaching and he tailors it to the child's experience and personality. Listening to him teach is pretty amazing. I want to video tape it and show it to the world. As you can see...we just think he's great!

I love taking lessons with Chris! He has the best way of explaining concepts and theory so that it is easy for someone like me, with no background in music, to understand. He's always professional, on time for lessons, and customizes my lessons based on songs I want to learn. Any student is lucky to have him as a teacher :)
