Cheryl C.

Mount Tabor, NJ

About Cheryl

I specialize in teaching music to ages 7 through 18 including college prep.

The focus is to learn how to read music, play melody and chords and progressively acquire skills as a musician and guitarist. Music theory and rhythm study is included to round out the musicianship of the student.

With regular daily practice, and as the student becomes more accomplished, we can add other music skills, like ear-training, accompaniment/ensemble work and songwriting.

Learning an instrument teaches focus, develops self-direction, self-esteem, how to reach a goal, plus the added benefit of develo
ping the brain for academic achievement. And, it's just plain FUN!!

I have been a musician for over 25 years. I have a Bachelor of Music and have taught guitar for over 10 years. In addition to guitar, I'm a vocalist, composer and arranger as well as a music publisher. I actively perform as both a classical guitarist and singer-songwriter.

I specialize in acoustic and acoustic/electric guitar - both classical and contemporary, steel string and nylon.

This is perfect for home schooled children or as a supplement to public or private school music programs. Children age 7 and up, properly seated with the right size guitar and under the guidance of an experienced teacher (me!) do very well.

PLEASE SPEAK TO ME before purchasing you or your child's instrument. A standard size steel string guitar is frequently difficult for a child (and some adults!) to handle.

***NOTES ABOUT SPECIAL NEEDS***

Usually, learning disabilities, ADD & ADHD go together just fine with guitar lessons and frequently give these precious young people a creative outlet. Speak to me about your child's needs so I can prepare the best lessons possible!

Be aware that there are stairs to my home studio. Please take this into consideration if you have an ambulatory disability.

*** STUDIO EQUIPMENT ***

Home Studio, dedicated space, guitars and recording equipment, keyboard and amps, music stands, chairs, comfortable waiting area for parents.

Robert H.

Randolph, NJ

About Robert

I started playing guitar at age 11, taking lessons at the local music studio in Hackensack, NJ. I became heavily influenced by The Beatles after hearing their music and as a teenager played in local rock groups, having some success being in the bands Jona's Ark and The Yorkshire Pudding, opening for artists Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, John Mayall and backing up Gary U.S. Bonds. I started playing piano at 19 when I took a group piano class in college. I attended Berklee College of Music and studied guitar with Bill Leavitt and Pat Metheny. That's where I started learning about all the great j
azz artists from Duke Ellington to Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Wes Montgomery to name a few. While at Berklee I also developed a love of the classical guitar and it's repertoire. After Berklee, I became a freelance musician and played guitar for The Drifters, Del Shannon, The Shirelles, The Marvelettes, The Crystals, Chuck Berry, Leslie Gore and believe it or not Tiny Tim. I played guitar, harmonica, mandolin and banjo in productions of: Hair, Tommy, Big River, Fiddler On The Roof and Grease. I composed my own music and performed and co-wrote with others who also wrote their own music. I have always taught private guitar lessons as far back as I can remember. One notable student was Stevie Wonder's son Keita who I taught for 2 years at Stevie's home in northern New Jersey as well as CBS News Anchor Charles Osgood's daughter Annie. Currently I teach 20 private guitar students a week.. From 1994 to 2000, I was the guitarist for The Royal Scam (a Steely Dan Tribute) and during that period I was hired by Hal Leonard Music Corp. to write a guitar transcription book called "The Best of Steely Dan". I was also hired by Brother International Corp. to compose and record a national radio jingle called "P-Touch", with Corey Glover from the rock band Living Colour doing the vocal tracks.
In 1996 I went to William Paterson University to obtain my teacher certification in music education. After the 9/11 attacks, I co-wrote and arranged "America Home Of The Free". The song was used to raise thousands of dollars for the victims of The World Trade Center attacks. Presently I divide my time between teaching, which I enjoy as much as performing and playing guitar with a jazz quartet called ....and All That Jazz, whose 2005 CD "Reflections" was recorded, mixed and mastered in my home based 24 track recording studio in northern NJ. I am also involved in a mandolin / classical guitar project called Music Of The Ages and perform with a 10 piece band called Epic Soul.
As a teacher I am very patient with students and enjoy helping them reach their own musical goals. I emphasize knowing the basics and encourage students to study music theory and basic reading of standard notation. I always ask my students to bring in songs they want to learn as a way to motivate them to practice more.

*** Lesson Details ***
GUITAR: I expect my students to practice at least 5 days a week for at least a 1/2 hour per day. I use the Suzuki method for young students ages 8 to10. We continue learning basic folk songs by ear and then start reading standard notation and basic theory within 6 to 8 months along with classical guitar duets. For older students I use the Hal Leonard guitar method. After 3 months of lessons students can expect to know the basic open position chords and strum patterns to some basic songs as well as some famous guitar riffs and also be able to read some basic melodies in standard notation. After 6 months students will be able to play a 12 bar blues and improvise with the pentatonic and blues scales as well as learn moveable scales and chords and apply these to songs.

PIANO: I also start young piano students with the Suzuki method so they can play some five finger familiar melodies in a short time period. Then we progress to reading notation and eventually adding chord accompaniment to melodies. I use the Faber piano method for reading standard notation.

*** Studio Equipment ***
24 track recording studio, room for parents to sit 14' x 21'...completely furnished studio with guitars, amps, piano, drum machine, synthesizer, microphones...the works.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students need a good quality and proper size guitar (for very young students) a music stand (for their home use) a foot stool, a metronome and books I assign along with an 8 1/2" X 11" blank manuscript book and a folder with side pockets to hold handout sheets. Piano students need their own instrument and the above materials minus the foot stool.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki classical guitar, classic rock, blues, jazz , popular, funk, country, folk, finger picking and pick style and piano.

Chris B.

Butler, NJ

About Chris

My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life.

The best lesson that I've personally learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument, or that your style of playing is superior to others, then you've stopped growing musically. Perhaps you excel in one area of your playing but need further development in another. Personally, I've also learned that I enjoy sharing my knowledge of music with others and exposing students to new techniques and musical concepts.

I strongly believ
e that these traits are the most important aspects of teaching music to others. No matter how advanced my playing skills might progress, I’ll always be able to relate to any type of student because I’m still learning something new everyday!

I had my first meeting with chris today. I was feeling a bit intimidated before i met him seeing all his credentials and experience. I need not have worried. He made me feel super comfortable and explained all the nuts and bolts of guitar on my level of understanding which is very basic. He was able to relay the lesson to me in a way that made so much sense, it just clicked. I left feeling very accomplished and very much looking forward to the next lesson

Chris was such a great instructor! I first started lessons with Chris a few months ago and I told him I only had a limited time to learn guitar. Taking the knowledge I already had with music, Chris helped me in only a few months to pick up and to be able to jam to some awesome songs on my acoustic guitar. He is very patient and works very well with whatever level you come in as! I came in knowing only one or two chords, and now I know many more and can confidently play some songs! Since I was a crazy busy college student, Chris was also very flexible with when lessons were, which I was very thankful for! I'd highly recommend taking lessons with him!

Gavin L.

Bedminster, NJ

About Gavin

Teaching guitar, and music for over 13 years, 10+ years of that time spent in professional music schools and shops. In addition, I spent 6 years in a special needs school, teaching general music, and guitar to students with learning and behavior issues.
I have had the pleasure of learning from numerous guitar teachers and mentors over the years including, T.T. Quick guitarist, David Dipietro.
Recently having toured the US with national acts in the band McClinton, sharing stages with Saving Abel, Adelita's Way, Framing Hanley, Red, Winger, Steelheart, Bad Seed Rising, LA Guns and many more. I
'm proud to say that I have taken the skills I've honed during those years to stages and studios around the country.
I can help you make sense of concepts that many students find confusing. Focusing on the goals the Students wishes to achieve. Ultimately, I teach a student to be able to progress independently. Learning songs is fine, but in the end it's about learning the concepts that allow the student to learn those songs on his/her own and be able to use those elements create their own music.
I teach all styles, and levels.
Also offering lessons for Bass guitar.

I've had a guitar in my room for a while but never took lessons or ever properly learned how to play. Decided one day to take lessons and stumbled upon Jonny. We have done a few sessions so far and it's been a blast! He went over the basics and slowly started teaching me songs I have always wanted to play. Jonny is a fantastic teacher that is very knowledgeable and excited about playing the guitar. I would highly recommend him to anybody looking to learn how to play.

I've been singing in a few bands but recently got an offer to play bass and sing for a band which I've never done before. Jonny was not only able to help me play the bass but he helped me learn the bands songs and sing and play them at the same time. Jonny just doesn't teach his students the same thing he really focuses on each students individuals goals and makes a lesson based around them. Bottom line A+ Great teacher for whatever it is your looking to play.
