Elizabeth B.

Grand Rapids, MI

About Elizabeth

*Only Available for lessons before 3PM- ALL TIMES AFTER 3PM ARE FULL*

2016 Joan Frey Boytim Independent Voice Teacher Award Winner!

I am a professional singer living in Grand Rapids, MI with a passion for teaching. My goal is to help my students become good musicians while sharing the joy and love of music with them. I have a Bachelor of Music from Grand Valley State University in Vocal Performance and a Master of Music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts in Voice Performance. From humble beginnings, I have maintained a busy studio since 2011. Since then, I have helped dozens o
f students excel and grow as singers several of whom have gone on to study music in college.

I hold membership in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Sigma Alpha Iota and Michigan School Vocal Music Association. Through these organizations, my students have the opportunity to perform and be adjudicated by other music professionals, they also have the opportunity to compete for scholarships.

**** Due to time constraints and construction traffic in Grand Rapids, I do not offer lessons from your home ****

~What can you expect in our lessons?~

I strive to help my students become independent musicians as well as more confident singers. We work diligently to create healthy, well supported sounds. Whether we are working on classical music or pop music, it is all rooted in the same techniques. I emphasize proper breathing, support, posture, resonance, clarity, pure tone, power without pushing, and building vocal range.

We will always start by warming up. I use exercises designed to target the specific areas I've outlined above. From there, we will work on building technical skills based on the students need and skills.

My young singers (under 6th grade) will use the book "Singing Lessons for Little Singers" in their lessons.

Please note:

***We will not work on songs until the student is comfortable reading basic solfege melodies.***

We will work extensively on the use of solfege until the student is comfortable reading music. This can take a month or more depending the students abilities and practice habits.

After the student is comfortable with solfege and reading music, we will find repertoire that will provide appropriate challenges and opportunities for both growth and success. I always welcome input from students for styles they would like to sing.

I especially love working with beginning students helping them build their technique, learn about music, and find their voice. Some of my most successful students have had no experience singing before taking voice lessons.

~What styles will we work on?~

My training has been centered in classical music but I also am an avid lover of Jazz, Musical Theater, and Singer/Song Writer, Folk, and Pop music.

~Lessons in my studio~

I have an electric keyboard, computer with printer, and a sitting area for parents to observe while their children are working and learning. My studio is also pet-free.

Kelsey P.

Grand Rapids, MI

About Kelsey

I love singing! I've been singing for as long as I can remember, and I've been creating songs and playing guitar since shortly after that. I have a Bachelor's in Music from Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, MI and I have been a full time working musician for two and a half years.

After graduating, I worked for two years at Baker College in Owosso, MI as a tutor for English and Math in the school library and eventually started teaching a basic English class. During these years I developed a passion for teaching. I love helping students discover skills they never thought they had,
and helping them develop those skills so they can become even better. Whether I'm teaching Singing, Performance, Songwriting, I strive to find ways to help each student achieve their goals.

Let's set big goals and achieve big dreams together!

I am 62. About 2 years ago I started singing karaoke when we go out with our friends on Saturday nights. My voice needs a lot of help, so I am very limited to what I can sing, and what I do sing is just okay.
Kelsey is patient, and as part of my lesson, i was to list songs as part of my goal. She picked out a couple of them for me to work on to improve my overall singing. Each week she would pick out areas of the song and tell me what I need to do to umprove on it. I have quite a ways to go, lots of bad habits to correct, but I have been able to apply what I have learned so far to songs that I have already been doing and to other songs that I wouldnt have considered before I started 3 1/2 months ago.
Kelsey is a great teacher, and I really look forward to my lessons.

Val L.

Spring Lake, MI

About Val

Val has been teaching Piano and Kindermusik for over 12 years. She began teaching private piano lessons while living in Hazelwood, MO and after moving to North Liberty, IA in 2008, she opened MusicEveryday and quickly grew from 2 to 23 students per week. In 2011, she joined Marek Szmyrgala as a piano teacher at Music4Life in North Liberty and added another 13 students to her weekly teaching schedule. All of her students had a variety of interests in music from classical, to jazz, to pop and even wrote their own music. Val prepared her students for 2 recitals every year and several students
participated in the Music Development Program, all earning First Class Honors.
The foundation of my teaching philosophy is the awareness of how different every person is in the way that they learn. My first goal when I meet a new student is getting to know them before choosing materials. It is the student’s learning style that should determine the method and materials that I assign.

I appreciate how Val takes the time to explain everything to me. I also, liked the practices she assigned that involved exercising my fingers and playing the keys.

My kids agree that Miss Val was our favorite piano teacher. Four of them took piano lessons from her for a few years recently.
Miss Val uses fun and creative strategies to engage the littlest students. She manages to stay calm and kind but firm when needed.
Miss Val caters to each student's style and interests. She often brings in extra music and fun, supplemental learning material.
Miss Val helps students establish good habits and provides motivation to practice regularly. I am positive she will be your favorite teacher, too!

David is the definition of professional. His trumpet knowledge and ability to help me improve in lessons week to week has been beyond beneficial. His talents extend much further than the trumpet and that aids in the lesson experience as a whole.

Do Singers Need Metronomes?
As a vocalist, should you practice singing with a metronome at your side? Read on for St. Augustine, FL teacher Heather L.'s advice...    Metronomes are devices that produce sounds in regular, pre-chosen rhythms.
