Lesson was well organized. Alex was very knowledgeable. He explained things in a way that a 14 year old can easily understand. I'm really looking forward to my next lesson.

John S.

Saint Paul, MN

About John

I have spent over 10 years gigging, recording, and teaching drums in the Twin Cities. I am a full-time musician, splitting time between original indie-pop band Step Rockets and Minneapolis-based variety band Soul Tree. I teach from my music studio in St. Paul as well as traveling to students' homes. I started drumming at the age of 10, honing my chops under the tutelage of drummer/vibraphonist Steve Roehm, member of the acclaimed Twin Cities jazz trio, The New Standards. I continued my musical education at St. Olaf College, where I played drums in the college's nationally accredited Jazz One ensemble while studying percussion with highly regarded Twin Cities musicians Phil Hey and Dave Hagedorn. Since graduating, I've found a niche in the world of teaching. I spent three years ...

John has helped me take my drumming to the next level. When I started lessons I was fairly new to the drum set and did not know how to read music. Over the past two years he has completely transformed me from a beginner to a gigging musician. John is patient, laid back and very knowledgeable and I would highly recommend him to drummers of all skill levels.

I played drums in a school band and haven't played in a few years. I approached John about getting back into the art even though I was a little rusty. Previously I have taken lessons with people who were skilled gigging drummers but not the best educators. John is a great combination of professional musician and a skilled educator, as shown through his patience and ability to explain techniques and skills. I highly recommend John as a teacher for any level, because he has been so wonderful in getting me back on my musical feet!

Beau J.

Saint Paul, MN

I like to record myself often, and I like to be recorded by others. While recording at some of the finest studios in the Twin Cities, I just love the feeling of hearing what my friends and I just threw down and froze in time.

About Beau

Hello, My name is Beau. The bass guitar is a great passion of mine and I am excited to share my knowledge and experience with others. I am eager to teach as well as continue my own personal journey as a musician. Initially self-taught, I attended McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, MN where I earned a degree in Bass Performance studying under Terry Burns, Gary Raynor, Jay Young, Jeff Bailey, and Charles Fletcher. I have been performing professionally in various original and cover/variety/wedding bands for over 6 years. I also have extensive studio performance experience constructing and recording bass lines of many different styles. My band, The Fontanelles, have been successfully writing, recording, and performing original music in the Twin Cities for the last three years.

I am very happy to have selected Colin as my drum teacher. He is patient and explains concepts clearly. I find that he provides helpful feedback identifying both what I am doing correctly and where I need to adjust. He adjusts the lessons to my progress, so I feel that I am receiving individualized instruction. I am a long time educator and know good instruction when I see it, and I see it in him!

Colin has been a great inspiration in my son's playing. It has brought a level of creativity and improvisation that he just wasn't learning from other teachers. He truly cares about his students and has a positive energy that helps motivate my son to be a better player. Colin has the chops and spectacular sense of timing and song memory. I would recommend Colin to students of all age and ability levels.
