*** Lesson Details ***
"As a teacher I offer a great deal of knowledge in many styles of music as well as a genuine motivation to impart the love I have for music performance. My journey through music has blessed me with experience in western classical, jazz, blues, and popular styles; all of which allows me to instruct students in whatever their musical goals may be. The lessons are always rooted in observing excellent pianistic technique and fundamental musicianship (ear training, reading music notation, etc). Finally, my students know me to be a patient instructor that consistently works to teach the material in a way that is accessible and relevant to the student's goals."

*** Travel Equipment ***

The student should have a notebook to record our lessons in, a piano/keyboard to play and receive instruction on, and what ever music material I have assigned (course work, lesson book, etc). The keyboard should be 88-key and weighted. If the student is very young then it is not critical that the keyboard have weighted keys but it is still preferable.

*** Specialties ***

Jazz Repertoire: Standards, Comping, Improvisational studies

Western Classical Music. I have studied many classical styles: baroque, classical, romantic, and modern classical music.

My son is a senior in high school and was wanting badly to make the All State Choir this year. Ben taught my son how to play the basics on the piano which helped him learn piano and that helped with his voice becoming more in tune. We found out today my son made the All State Choir! Thank you Ben for teaching and helping my son how to understand the music!!! Now he is trying to write songs as well.

Joannah B.

Forest Grove, OR

I like to begin each lesson by waking up the body with simple stretches, because as singers, the whole body is our instrument! Then I warm up the voice with exercises to to create the freest, most efficient tone. We explore and balance the systems of breath, phonation (creating sound), resonance (sound quality), and articulation (formation of vowels and consonants). Repertoire is chosen based on students' interest and ability level and includes classical and musical theater selections.

Age level for voice lessons is age 13 to adult, though exceptions will be made on an individual basis.

About Joannah

Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. In the evenings after listening to my mother teach piano lessons to a studio full of students, I would climb into her lap and beg her to teach me to play the piano. I eagerly soaked up everything that she taught me, enthralled by this incredible language of music.

I continued studying piano with my mom all the way through high school, adding much-anticipated voice lessons in high school as well. We came from such a small town that we had to travel two hours round trip for my weekly voice lessons.

As an under
graduate student at Willamette University in Oregon, I launched into further piano and voice studies earning a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance. I began teaching seriously in the spring of 2009 as a member of NATS, and continued as an adjunct faculty voice instructor at Willamette University for two years. I also played piano for the Opera Workshop class as we prepared for two full length operatic productions: Our Town by Ned Rorem, and Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck.

I have since completed a Master of Music in Voice Performance at The Boston Conservatory where I specialized in Vocal Pedagogy and Classical Vocal Performance, and continue teaching private voice and piano lessons in Cambridge to students of all ages.

I seek to create a nurturing, encouraging and appropriately challenging environment for my students. I want to help each student deepen their curiosity and love for music while simultaneously empowering and equipping them with skills to achieve their musical goals.

I've only just started taking lessons with Johannah yet she's been able to help me explore my voice and part with some bad habits. She is all about using the whole body to produce a free and healthy sound. She is energetic, non-judgmental and encouraging. I look forward to continuing to learn from her.

I stumbled into lessons with Joannah after spotting a flyer in Porter Square, shortly after I had moved to the area, and it was the best act of random chance ever! I haven't had singing lessons in well over a decade but I still thought I knew what to expect. Not so. Joannah's lessons are very different to anything I've experienced before and yet my voice sounds the best it ever has. She has an arsenal of strange and wonderful exercises that I enjoy doing as much as the actual songs, with each one designed to work on and improve a specific part of the vocal machine. It's a whole-body experience, and I have to say, I've never enjoyed arpeggios more than when sung from on top a bouncy purple yoga ball!

I take my lessons for fun and pleasure, both of which Joannah provides in spades, but also for the satisfaction of seeing a continuous improvement in something I enjoy. The beautiful (and hitherto unsuspected) tone, colour, and range of expression that Joannah has been able to pull out of me over the last few months really does impress me. Along with her warm, bright personality, Joannah is a true technician who really knows and understands her craft. I feel very lucky to have found her.

Whether recreationally or professionally we'll expand repertoire to display versatility, work on aural skills (sight singing, intervals, dictation), theory and musicality.

About Charity

The body is an incredible instrument that we use to speak, to rock out, walk, boogie, express, signify and croon. The body can captivate audiences or communicate to a friend. A person can personally and professionally take flight, gaining confidence through becoming familiar with themselves, their bodies and their artistry.

Charity Marchandt ran away with both opera and the circus.Their vocal skill continues to take them on the jazz, theater and classical stages like Portland Opera and Opera Theater Oregon.

Combining both disciplines of music and cirque is one of their favorite thing

Highly skilled and great with kids. Looking forward to more lessons. While I'm just there with my kids (not taking lessons myself), I have found her warmup techniques more effective for me than what I picked up from two years of competitive high school choirs where i had an excellent voice instructor.

Kayla was professional, knowledgeable, clear, and encouraging. She asked excellent questions to find out my experience and goals, then moved right into effective instruction on warmup exercises around breathing and simple scales. She made me feel comfortable and willing to take risks, and I quickly felt stronger and more confident.

Parvaneh G.

Lake Oswego, OR

Have fun while learning sound vocal technique! My lessons are for the budding professional as well as the person who just wants a creative outlet. You will get to choose the repertoire you work on, in addition to some songs that I will choose for you. I am a classically trained singer who is comfortable teaching students of all kinds. Healthy vocal technique will always come first, but my students will also learn ear training & theory. Let's develop your voice together!

About Parvaneh

Hello! My name is Parvaneh and I am a voice and piano teacher with over 20 years of classical music study. I grew up in the Portland area and studied piano for 10 years before focusing on vocal arts full-time. At 18, I moved to California to study vocal performance at UC Santa Barbara, earning my Bachelor of Music degree with honors. I excelled in ear training and music theory while at UCSB and performed in numerous operas and choirs, including as the alto section leader of the Santa Barbara Choral Society. After graduating college, I decided to pursue other interests professionally, but have
maintained my status as a professional vocalist with jobs as a paid section leader at several churches. Currently, I am the alto section leader at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Portland.

I believe in nurturing the individuality in each student and encouraging healthy vocal technique. My areas of expertise include: diction/translation, Alexander Technique, ear training and theory.
