Students can expect to grow as a well-rounded musician. I will teach the students about the basic fundamentals to the advanced methods of effective practices. As a professional musician, I will focus my time and energy on making sure students understand how much practicing can will improve playing. Students will have a weekly progress book. Karena's teaching style lies between analytical problem solving and imaginative music making. She is always eager to pass on the information she has learned from the teachers she has worked with and applies them in creative ways with her students. Phrasing is always first and she helps students problem solve the technical side to enable the music to come alive. While having a deep knowledge of the physicality of playing, she is sensitive in gauging what kind of approach each student needs and what will help them grow most effectively.

I offer flute lessons for the beginner-intermediate student, where together we'll work on scales, breath support, basic theory, and repertoire. Lessons should always be fun, so we forget that we're secretly working so hard!

I always begin lessons with some form of warm up to focus on beauty in tone and then I follow that with exercises that build technique. I am happy to work with students with whatever method book they are currently using but I am also happy to suggest method books and literature that I feel could further guide their growth. My lessons are very student-centered in that I see what the student's goals are and work from there. I adjust my lessons based on how the student is performing that day. I am happy to teach students of any age and of any ability level!

I will help you identify difficulties that you have in your playing, provide you with a helpful solution, and make a personalized plan to help you achieve your goal.
