*** Lesson Details *** I am friendly and like to inspire my students to find their own best potential. Suitable challenges are fun and needed to keep the personal progress going on. "No suffering in my studio!" means that the process of learning needs to be enjoyabl
e but at the same time I am asking the students to give their best effort. Setting frequent goals in form of group classes and recitals keeps us in full sail and teach us to enjoy the act of playing both alone and in front of friendly audience. I teach both classical and Suzuki methods. I like to keep my students musically well fed and encourage exploring music reading and music theory next to practical skills. I stir my students toward high standard personal level in their studies, an ingredient from Finnish cultural climate.
My name is David, and I am a music teacher of many different subjects. These include guitar, piano, bass, ukulele, recording, music theory, production, composition and film music composition.
All styles, and all ages. Classical, Rock, Alternative, Slide Guitar, Blues, Jazz, and more!
I have a Masters Degree in music from The University of Melbourne in Australia, as well as having the distinction of a Bachelors Degree in Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
Many times a student will come to me after having been with another teacher for some time,.. they express to me that the other instructor did not teach them what they wanted to learn, nor did they achieve the result that they wanted.
The instructor perhaps had them mired in endless exercises and studies that were great
to get you READY to play music, but perhaps was not music in and of itself.
I find that when I get right down to the nitty gritty of playing, and show my students a song they love and know, and get them playing guitar by the end of the session that they are usually thrilled and excited.
In the end it makes them work harder and practice long because THEY ARE PLAYING MUSIC ON THE GUITAR!!!
Certainly exercises are of paramount importance, but when you can make that connection with a student and help them to relate to the guitar the exercises are ultimately easier to them, and the experience of playing guitar an enjoyable and less alienating task.
Grab your guitar and start today!! Let's get you playing TODAY!!!!
“I've been working with David for a couple of months, and it has been a great experience. I'm new to bass, with a little guitar experience--he quickly sized up what I knew and had me working on exercises and a great bass line that got me playing right away. He has been very flexible and accommodating of my schedule needs, and he gives plenty of positive and constructive feedback. I've been working in education for nearly 30 years, and I know a great teacher when I see one. David fits the bill, and I'm lucky to be working with him.”
Rudy F., Principal Middle School
“My son had been taking lessons for seven years and was losing interest. David's passion for music, knowledge of music theory, ability to read the student and know the best way to approach the lessons is exactly what my son needed. Along with his background in a wide variety of genres….classical, rock, jazz, etc. has made learning more exciting, resulting in a renewed interest.”
Tammy S., University Place
“David is an outstanding instructor! My son is 5 years old and loves him. My son is occasionally a difficult child with his own special quirks, but David is so patient and observant and tailors the lessons as we go along week to week to keep my son engaged, encouraged and learning. I also have two younger children who must tag along to the lesson and even they are excited during the lessons and are already asking when they start their lessons! We will be starting at least one more child's lessons with him during this coming school year! He is great!”
Cherise H., Parkland
“Loving the relaxed atmosphere with David. Bargain prices for the one on one experience with such an awesome, educated and talented musician.”
Raven R., Tacoma
“David is an amazing talent and provides me with much needed inspiration. In little over a year, I have learned a tremendous amount about nearly all styles of guitar, classical and lead guitar in particular. It's very helpful to have an awesome instructor who is extremely knowledgeable and very patient. His lesson plans are geared towards what I want to learn and the lessons that we work on cover all the techniques that are necessary to take my skills to the next level. He makes every lesson fun and he works with me until I am comfortable to move on.”
Larry L., Gig Harbor
“David tailors each lesson dynamically to my own progression which has been great. Gauges progression and gives you things to work on before the next lesson. Highly recommend him!”
Kory J., Tacoma
"David has been our son's guitar instructor for the better part of a year. During that time we've appreciated his patient encouragement, especially during the early weeks of instruction. His ability to individually tailor his teaching to his students , incorporating their musical interests has helped our son progress quickly and helped keep him motivated. he really is a wonderful teacher."
Amy L., Tacoma
"Where do I begin? I started with a guitar and a couple of chords...(A lot of desire but basically an empty canvas)." 'This was my life for a number of years until I met David.
Now I must first admit, I am ADD so teaching me and captivating my attention is no easy task...David not only broke through that barrier but opened the door to world of music I had aways felt and now suddenly I could touch.
If you posses the desire to learn and the drive to work...the sky is the limit."
Wes H. City of Destiny Tacoma, WA
"I am very happy with my decision to take lessons with David. In just 2 months I've gone from strumming some chords to understanding picking patterns, learning how to put together an entire song, and expanding my techniques. I am very surprised at how much technical skill I have been able to pick up in such a short period of time"
Marianne B., Tacoma
"I'm 46 years old and my only known talent is for overcomplicating things. I've always admired a good guitar player and wanted to learn to play myself--who doesn't?--but felt I didn't have the talent or just "couldn't do it." Then I found David and he said, 'Oh yes you can. Commit to 4 lessons up front and you'll see that you can.' I took the leap and sure enough, he had me playing blues riffs in less than one month. All I had to do was listen and do as he instructed me to and it all comes very naturally. There's no stress, just a whole lot of fun! If you're like me and you thought you couldn't play guitar, start with David and just have some fun with it. It's simple. You won't want to put the guitar down again!"
Dan D., Tacoma
I had been playing guitar for about 5 years and had only been self taught. I found myself completely stuck playing the same chords and not able to play riffs or solos at all. In my first lesson I was playing the blues with slides and hammer ons and pull offs. In a couple of lessons he had me soloing in different keys and playing riffs from guitar gods! He was able to teach me in a couple lessons what took me years trying to teach myself! He makes lessons so much fun because not only are you learning the music theory but he relates it to popular songs that you can practice along with. He also has so much knowledge in other aspects as well. He can teach you about music gear and amps or help you compose your own music. He caters to your style and taste in music and can teach you ANYTHING!
I love guitar period, but it's overtly frustrating when you have no idea where to start, or how to play at all. I went through multiple guitar instructors trying to learn how to play and each of them weren't very specific, or didn't hone in on any one thing at a time so you could really start to get it down and process it. Then we happened to find David, and he was really what we were looking for. I started picking up chords like no other, It helped, and is helping tremendously. He goes into depth about the song, letting you comprehend it a little more, and ultimately learning it quicker and better.
Skye R., Tacoma WA
I have had 4 different Blues guitar Teacher in the last 6 months, getting nowhere as far as really playing some Blues until I ran across David. The other teachers just wanted me to learn the pentatonic scales, Major and Minor. That took a lot of boring weeks and I am sure I will need to know those scales but I just wanted someone to show / teach me Blues chords, related to Blues songs and the timing to the chord changes so I could start playing some kind of Blues. I have had 6 one hour lessons so far with David and I am playing the Blues. The first 4 hours Dave showed me a E, A, B7 blues chord progression with some step up and step down notes. The 2nd 2 hours Dave showed me a A, D9, A7,E9 Blues chords and Blues timing with slides.
I take one hour Lessons every Thursday and in 6 hours I am playing the Blues. I picked up the guitar about 6 months ago, started teaching myself and not really getting anywhere. I am not a fast learner, about average in learning something new. Now I set a home Learning my guitar and polishing the Blues songs that David has taught me, starting to get FUN.
Les F. Tacoma, Wa.
Working with David has made me focus on areas of my chops that needed fine tuning. He provides the basic exercises and tools that, when practiced enough in a zen-like manner, clarifies your understanding of movement on the fret board, and makes you sound a bit more professional. Questions regarding speed, theory, notation, composition, and even string size, are ready for answer with David, which is what keeps me working with him. From begining, to intermediate, to professional levels, if you're looking to improve your chops, Dave's your guy.
Frank L., Seattle WA
I had tried many different instructors and had become very frustrated with trying to learn guitar. Within one lesson David had me playing ACDC and RUSH! David just has a way of explaining things so that they make sense and doesn't waste any time getting right down to the nuts and bolts of guitar. A lot of other instructors spend alot of time getting you 'ready' to play guitar, but with David we got down to playing guitar right away!
Stevie J., Olympia WA
“I started receiving lessons from David a few years ago, to improve my guitar abilities. I always used to tell people, "I've been playing guitar since the Eighties, though you would never know it." At the time I started, I knew some Metal riffs, three-chord Punk Rock progressions, and simple 12-bar blues. Though I took two guitar classes and first-year Music Theory in college in the early Nineties, the only scale I could say I knew was "blues pentatonic," emphasis on the quotation marks.
My goal was to relearn Modes/Scales, and brush up on theory, so that I could write more complex material. David taught me that, and so much more. Over these few years, I've learned Progressive Rock, Fusion/Jazz, and even some Country styles, as well as a great deal more about Metal and, yes, even Punk from David. I can play leads and solos with much more proficiency, in timing with the rhythm, and more tonally correct, than I ever could before. He has also helped me read music better, construct more professional-sounding compositions, and has started me on my own path to produce my own recordings, from recommending and using recording software, to capturing dynamics with mic placement, to mixing the rough takes to get the most out of the sound.
For a musician of any level or caliber, having an instructor like David is a true asset--for he has the knowledge and skills to take an entry-level musician every step of the way to becoming a professional performer, recorder, mixer, engineer, and producer. The only limit to the lesson's potential is your own level of determination, which David quite expertly helps you to improve with every session. Even if your goal is to simply learn to play one song on one instrument--and David teaches MANY instruments--he will have you playing that song like the musician who wrote it before you realize it--as long as you stick with your practice between lessons. That part's up to you!”

I have been taking guitar lessons with David for a year and a half. It has been a blast to learn guitar from him. Whenever possible, he likes to structure his lessons so that you're playing music and it doesn't feel like you're doing drills, but when I have to work on something specific he gives me great drills to work on.
I've learned everything from Bach to AC/DC, from The Beatles to Rush. David encourages me that I'm improving, but also pushes me to continue to improve.
I am learning a lot under his tutelage, and I am going to keep learning as much as I can.
Hi I'm Dillon Casey and I've been teaching music for almost 15 years and really enjoy it. My mission as a teacher is to create an atmosphere of learning, fun, and creativity for my students. I aim to show my students that music can be exciting and enjoyable and to help them foster their own love and appreciation of music.
I cater to each individual students needs and have created a curriculum framework in order to do this effectively and keep students engaged and having fun. I incorporate elements of music history, theory, technique, and creativity.
I have a unique method that I've developed that incorporates my love of apps and technology, along with my interest in psychology, where I use strategies in goal setting, practice techniques, and continual motivation to keep the student not only learning, but learning much quicker
and more enjoyably than a standard guitar lesson.
I am also an experienced professional musician and recording engineer. I have been playing music professionally for 17 years. I received my Bachelor in Music Performance from San Diego State University in 2012. I've had the opportunity to study under many notable guitar teachers including Peter Sprague and Celin Romero. I've played on stage with many notable performers and have received multiple awards and nominations at the San Diego Music Awards. I run DaisyKiller recording studios in Los Angeles.

I've taken lessons with Dillon for 5 months, and he has helped me make tremendous progress. I was lucky to find Dillon because my music interests are all over the place. I wanted to learn about fingerstyle, soul, jazz, blues, Latin music, music theory, transcribing for bands. Dillon helped me with all of those. He's the kind of person whose has really studied the guitar and can distill the music from many styles into a few simple ideas for the guitar, and explain those ideas in a memorable way.
I'll continue taking lessons from him, and would recommend him as a teacher to anyone looking for a teacher with charisma.

Dillon is an absolutely amazing teacher. I just started playing the piano a few months ago and he has been instrumental in motivating me and giving me the tools I need to get started. He is always willing to switch it up each lesson depending on how I am feeling that week and I really enjoy working with him. Dillon is extremely talented and dedicated to music which is really great, because starting out can be hard. I would highly recommend Dillon to anyone!

Dillon- was not reliable. He no-showed twice and his phone was not active. Not a good start for beginner student!
After more than 25 years of teaching at music camps, music stores, 3 colleges and my home, I completely understand that the lessons are all about YOU, the student: what you want to learn, taught to you in a way that works for your brain and personality.
And if you don't know exactly what you want to learn, that's OK. We can figure that out together as we go along learning the basics.
I help students learn to play songs by artists they like.
I also help students write songs, or put chords to their existing lyrics.
For those who are interested, I teach note-reading (not required) and theory (not required) and ear training (not required).
The lessons are always tailored towards your (the student's) goals.
I also teach classical and fingerstyle guitar for the occasional person who specifically wants
either of those styles.
My purpose as a teacher: help people have a fun experience, learning in an organized way, adapted to your learning style and goals, while learning to do exactly what you wanted to do when you decided you wanted to play the guitar.
In 1994, I was let go from my job at a music store because I was sick. Which sounds awful, but was the best thing to ever happen to me- it was then I got over my fears and became a full-time musician, teaching and writing and performing. I have never looked back! I may not be a household name, but I am living the dream.
Whether you want to sing to your kids or play for an audience of 50,000, or just play guitar for yourself, you first have to get started.
Carla's teaching technique was perfect for me. I have played the guitar for longer than I care to admit and even I was tired of hearing my same old stuff. She incrementally moved me forward line by line, measure by measure to where I now have several fingerpicking style numbers in my portfolio.
Playing for my own enjoyment is now enjoyable once again.
My lessons were online and very effective - when I got stuck, Carla would send me a sample audio clip of her playing the difficult part which was a godsend for me in how I learn new musical things.
I highly recommend Carla and her Carlalology method of guitar teaching. You won't be disappointed.

Great teacher and she teaches many different styles of playing.

i originally selected carla as my instructor based on her skills, resume, other students comments etc. listed on the website. shortly after my lessons began i realized she was a vital resource for guidance, knowledge and material all of which would enable me to grow as a musician. she is talented, smart, inspirational, funny and more, what else could you ask for?!!!!
I have 40 years of playing drums & percussion and 12 years of teaching beginning and intermediate drummers by ear, performance & notation. Preforming drums has brought so much enjoyment to my life and has expanded my cognitive and creative mind more than I would have ever realized when I started in 1978. Teaching/sharing my drumming experience is a passion, my students are taught not only how to play drums but also about music structure (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.), how to perform with other musicians and how to dissect a piece of music. Various styles and rhythms are taught and rudiments are covered thoroughly - nothing better than an impressive double stroke roll! I have always been a teacher that I feel can understand each personality and adjust my approach to each lesson as needed and furthermore, I always treat my students with res
pect, courtesy and patience which I find makes them more apt to relax, listen, learn, feel the music and have fun!
I have been playing the piano for over twenty years. I began at the early age of seven years old. Because piano has played such a vital role in my life, I believe it is a responsibility of mine to pass on such a delightful gift of piano playing to those who would like to make it a part of their life too.
I have spent over ten years teaching piano in different areas. This includes a piano lab for a private school, a music studio, and at my home. Throughout the past ten-plus years, I’ve had the privilege to teach over 250 students. I have had over a dozen large recitals with crowds each time of over 150 people.
Not only do I have piano experience, but I also have studied the art of teaching by earning my bachelor of science in elementary education.
My passion is music and being able to teach others to play the piano. I love seeing
the progress of students and the light that comes from learning their favorite piece. I love to make it fun & exciting for students to learn.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you on your piano playing journey!
Flexible, patient, friendly! A very good first meeting!!

I am a voice and acting teacher specializing in musical theatre, pop-rock, and other commercial forms of singing. I teach all ages from kids to adults since I am also adjunct faculty at Nova Southeastern University. I attended University of Pennsylvania for my undergrad and received my Masters in Musical Theatre from Boston Conservatory. I focus on breathe work, increasing range, and freeing the natural voice with healthy technique and placement whether you are belting or singing classical pieces. I work with many students on college auditions and thespian competitions - I have students at colleges all over the country, working in NYC, and performing all over the world. I love imparting my love of singing and acting to my younger students as well, making lessons fun and flexible to the needs of each student. Having performed in NYC, Bos
ton, Philadelphia, and throughout the South Florida region, I understand the hard work it takes to perfect your craft. Together we will work to achieve your goals as a singer and actor to make yourself the complete package you know you can be!
Melanie is an absolutely incredible vocal teacher/coach. I noticed a change in my voice after just the first lesson. Her vast knowledge of the anatomy used to create vocal sounds combined with the techniques she teaches has definitely improved my voice. She taught me how to belt and showed me the difference between my belt and my mix, which was beyond helpful. She also taught me how to sing in my head voice in a healthier and more effective way. And on top of that, she has a mental library full of great song recommendations for my individual voice. Can't wait until our next lesson!
"Steven teaches our two kids Piano. They have really improved and enjoy their lessons. My kids describe him as kind, understanding, and somebody who makes
piano fun and a good teacher. I highly recommend him"
"Shawn is very well informed on music theory. I have had discussions with him on numerous occasions, quite enlightening."
"Grew up singing and didn't keep up in college. Decided to find a voice teacher to help me get back into healthy vocal practices and work on creating a voc
al sound more specific to my ideal genres. Benjamin has been an extremely effective teacher for me and quickly identified some of the more vital pain points in how I typically sing. This being particularly relieving as I have had many voice coaches in the past, but none were able to identify these issues and I have experienced dramatic improvements ever since. If you are someone who prefers more technical or more casual styles of learning, I have found that Benjamin is comfortable communicating concepts in both styles of teaching and adjusts as necessary. He is also extremely responsive to the aims of his students and actively contextualizes the work to those aims. Very diligent regarding practical matters; easy to work around personal schedules and is active in confirming/scheduling lessons with students. Would recommend him to students of all styles & experiences."
"She is a great teacher."
"Thomas was very professional in his approach to teaching. His workplace was very clean and neat. This made us feel very comfortable and welcome. He is a p
ersonal teacher. Before any teaching took place he wanted to know my child's likes and dislikes when it came to music. This meant a lot to me. It showed me that he was interested in my son's development as a musician. It told me a lot about his character. He is not just teaching but it is interested in his students. He challenged my child while allowing him to express himself while learning and playing. When he taught he came down to his level and was very patient. This was a very positive experience for us. My son is very excited and we are looking forward to future classes. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a drum instructor."
"Great Trombone Teacher!
We needed a Trombone teacher for my 7th grader this past summer and Jessie was available. He has since then proven to be a lovely
teacher - very knowledgable, supportive, easy to understand and professional. I would definitely recommend him to other parents."
"Don was wonderful with our son Brett, who enjoyed his first lesson immensely. We are definitely in this for the long haul with Don! He was very patient
and very attentive to Brett."
"Hannah has been an amazing violin teacher for my child. She really has a way of making it fun. My kids look forward t o music lessons every week!"
"Mr. West is great. He is my teacher at my school and has helped both my cello playing and my Trombone Improv so much. He is really knowledgeable and dedic
