I also teach students to play by ear and learn to improvise. I will keep lessons fun, engaging, interesting and challenging.

Mission Statement:
I seek to teach the language of music; to give students the basic building blocks they need in order to find their own style of expression and harmony in life. When I was growing up practicing piano, I hated how boring it was to practice (I still loathe practicing!). I want to show students how they can break the music down and enjoy the tone of the simplest chord, and find practicing to be more brain engaging.
Missed Lessons:
Learning an instrument requires commitment and responsibility, both from teacher and student. Please let me know at least 24 hours ahead of time if a lesson is to be missed, and we can schedule a make-up lesson.
Student Responsibilities:
Learning is a two-way process. I cannot teach if the student is not willing to listen, learn, and try new things. Practicing MUST be a daily routine (at least 20-30 minutes a day); without practice we cannot move forward.
Parent Responsibilities:
With younger children, I ask that the ...

Students will learn basic piano skills such as hand placement, note reading, note values, pedal use, major and minor scales, expressions, etudes, pieces, memory work, music history, performance techniques, and most of all to have fun learning the piano. I will expect students to have a minimum 67 note keyboard with sustain pedal, or a good piano to use for personal practice time. Each student should spend at least 20-30 minutes daily to start. They must purchase the recommended books.

I can teach you to read music and play it on the piano (classical/pop/jazz, etc -- either music notation, or lead sheet/chord reading). I can also teach you to play piano by ear. Or, if you're a singer, I have many techniques and methods to use the piano to help you feel more empowered and knowledgable as a singer. I thought a long time before I started piano again at the age of 67.
It has been over 40 years since I touched a keyboard. However,
Cheryl has made each lesson not only fun but she has been a very patient teacher. I recently extended my lesson time so I could benefit even more from her knowledge. I look forward to my weekly lessons and my practice time at home. I would recommend Cheryl to anyone no matter your age."
