Nick coached my daughter, Ann, through her South Bay Teen Idol Competition, in which she was a finalist. Ann was competing against singers with more years of experience, but the superior quality of Nick's instruction enabled her to be competitive.

About Thomas

Tom has a music degree focused in guitar performance and a combined professional teaching and performance career that spans over twenty years.

Tom began teaching in 1994 and still practices today instructing students of all ages on guitar and bass techniques, as well as music theory.

Tom is very laid back and embraces working at the pace that each of his students feels most comfortable. Lessons are about the student’s ambitions. If it is learning their favorite songs or a deep dive into music theory, jazz improvisation or songwriting it can be covered in strides that seem fit to the student. Books can be used for guidance and a custom lesson plan created that will fit specific criteria desired to be achieved by the student. Remember, practice makes perfect. The more you put in, the more you will get out of it!!

Ben has been instructing my 2 kids (now aged 11 and 9) in-home for at least 5 years. We started off with piano for the first few years but then switched to a combination of piano and acoustic guitar (half a session dedicated to each instrument).

He is patient, kind, and highly knowledgeable. I clearly see the upward trajectory in my kids' musical capabilities. One of my kids can be difficult to deal with, especially when he is tired, but Ben would mold his approach to the lesson on the spot to keep my kid engaged (e.g., instead of continuing the lesson on the actual piano, he'd switch to a fun music-oriented game).

I hadn't played a musical instrument since elementary school when I started Ukulele lessons with Ben. Ben started from the beginning, answered all my questions along the way, and built upon that information in each lesson. It wasn't in a didactic way, but in a way that was really customized to fit my Ukulele lesson goals. Ben's teaching style is very flexible also. I had some Ukulele lesson books I had been gifted and we worked from those. I didn't feel that I had to buy a bunch of additional equipment, books, etc.

I recommend Ben as a music teacher. He is understanding, encouraging, and inspirational. I am looking forward to continuing lessons with Ben and JC Instrumental.

Ben has been working with our daughter since January 2019, when she turned 6 1/2. He arrives at our home on time each week and he works with her at an age appropriate level. We appreciate that he recognizes the effort she puts into the weeks when she practices often and he gently makes her aware when she hasn't practiced enough. He always speaks with her in a kind way and with us in a collaborative manner. We all want her to enjoy her piano experience, and we are thankful to have found Ben just a few blocks away from our home.

About Anna

Hi there! I'm Anna, and I'm looking forward to meeting you. I've been offering private piano lessons since 2009 and offer foundations in music theory, technique, sight-reading and classic piano repertoire.

I begin most students in Faber method books, before branching into classical repertoire including selections from Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary time periods. My teaching style is flexible though, so I'll be happy to adapt to your individual liking and needs.

In 2012 I graduated from Thomas Edison State College with a degree in music and in 2017 I completed my Master's in Education from Post University. Today I enjoy teaching music to students ranging from six years old through adult.

I believe quality practice and motivation are key to success, and I'm looking forward to helping you succeed!

Anna is an extremely knowledgeable and skilled musician, which inspires her students to want to excel themselves! My 7year old son has been taking lessons from Anna for about 2 years. He is excited to go to his lesson each week! Although my son struggles with some dyslexia, Anna is extremely patient with him and makes him feel like he is valuable and capable. She has adjusted the method and curriculum to find something that works well for him. She carefully explains the lessons, makes my son feel so special, and inspires him to want to learn.

About Josh

I am a Composer, Songwriter, Guitarist, Bassist, and Keyboard/Synth player. My passion is modern music and art with a focus on excellence and attention to detail. I love music of all genres from old to modern, high class to low brow, and seek to instill a similar appreciation in my students. Encouraging pupils to achieve and create new goals is my passion.

My educational background is split between the composition of music and the study of music technology, allowing for a broader range of study should the student desire. Recipient of BA in Music Composition and BA in Music Technology, Cum Laude.

I have been playing and teaching for the past 10 years and can guide students through their own musical journey. I can teach students to read/write music and pursue the study of music with academic rigor, to learn how to create contemporary

music using chord sheets, or both depending on the goals and preference of the student.

Currently I play bass guitar in a modern Jazz/Neo-Soul band where we perform original songs as well as arrangements of "jazz standards", improvise in response to various prompts, graphic scores, art pieces, and perform for community events.

Ive really enjoyed my experiences with Josh. He is well versed in all styles of composition and specializes in more modern avant-garde styles. Our lessons in modern counterpoint have really improved my harmonizations skills and expanded what I thought was capable for chords in a band setting.(i.e. jazz big band, concert band, orchestra, etc.)

"Allan worked so well with my daughter. He follows her pace so to not frustrate her. I love the choice of songs he has her playing!!"

"Today we had our first piano lesson with Molly. My eight year old daughter absolutely loved her! Even though my daughter talked way too much instead of li
stening, Molly dealt with that with alot of patience and my daughter came home with some great excersizes to practice. She's a very talented, patient and knowledgeable teacher. Just one lesson and I'd highly recommend her!"

Kyle
"I started with Eric about 4 months ago. I've had one in-person lesson and the rest online (around 15 lessons total). I came in as a complete beginner. He
has been patient and worked with me (I think many of his students already have experience). Sometimes he has to explain very basic things to me, and he works hard to explain it in a way that I understand. The benefits I've seen thus far have been better pitch matching (both to a piano and musical pieces) and working on proper placement.

While I think Eric is great and definitely knows his stuff, if you are considering music (or any other skill worth pursuing, really), you're going to get out what you put into it; your instructor will only take you so far. You have to work for it and want it. Eric points me in the right direction and corrects things the best he can in our short time together. My job is to do the work between lessons to ensure I'm constantly improving. Simply having a good instructor will not guarantee success. You have to put in the work and effort, too."

"Carl is a good teacher. Very patient and easy to understand. I look forward to future lessons with him."

"I had a great vocal training sessions with Laura, she is very knowledgeable and fun to work with. I am not a beginner, I got some music education as a chi
ld, but never vocal training one on one. Since I have no experience with other vocal instructors, I have no comparison, but it was very good experience for me. Give a try, you won't regret it!"

"Mark is an exceptional teacher. I have been taking banjo lessons with Mark, both bluegrass style and clawhammer. He is able to teach well so many other st
ring instruments like ukelele, mandolin and guitar. His wide knowledge base allows him to help you with any instrument or situation. He is very patient, observant and detail oriented. I like that he is able to assess my issues quickly and provide good feedback. He builds confidence in you. The best thing that you can hear from Mark is "for you the best way to approach this...". His lessons are really tuned to you as an individual with the best plan and strategy that will work for you and your weaknesses and strengths. You end up doing things that you thought were too difficult for you just a week before. He's great!"

"It was great. I have never even HELD a guitar, let alone played one. I will practice all week and hopefully, next week it will be easier."

"As parents, we can start seeing significant progress and improvement of sound quality! Autumn is working on correcting techniques."

Strategies for Sight Singing

By Suzy S.

It may seem like instrumentalists have it much easier when it comes to sight reading music; by simply pressing a key or a string, the notes are immediately available to them without any additional thought, and all that’s left to them is to work out duration, dynamics, and tempo. Singers, on the other hand, don't have an instrument to rely on. Taking a song previously unknown to you and delivering a reasonably accurate performance the very first run-through isn’t a talent that everybody ha …
