About Poh Hock

Hi! My name is Poh Hock. I have been playing music for at least 20 years and I have been teaching the guitar for about 9 years now. I provide lessons at your home, my studio and online!

I have a very hands-on approach to teaching and I believe that students should have fun while learning. I also do not teach based on a book unless requested and my lessons are tailored according to a student's needs, personality and goals.

I graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2013 with a degree in Music Performance and I am also a certified Yamaha Classical Guitar teacher. I currently play guitar with Metal Blade artist, Native Construct.

Poh Hock is a great teacher that really has a passion for playing and teaching guitar. His style of teaching is very precise and methodical. I learned a lot of songs taking lessons with him but more importantly Poh Hock taught me how to practice material that I was working on. The lessons were really more like guided practice sessions. While some teachers that I've had might just use the lesson to teach material and have me practice over the week, Poh Hock used lesson time to really drill sections and get them to sound good. I absolutely recommend Poh Hock as a teacher for anyone who seriously wants to improve their playing and their approach to music in general.

When I heard that the lead guitarist for one of my favorite bands, Native Construct, was offering lessons, I knew I had to give it a try. Having had only a year of experience beforehand, my skills were shaky to say the least. I've taken weekly .lessons for a few months and have seen a marked improvement in my fundamental skills. Not only does Poh Hock create a great learning environment, but he also creates a very relaxed one. If I didn't improve as much as he thought I should've over the course of a week, he didn't get on me about practicing more. Instead, he worked with me to determine where I was struggling and then would help me overcome it. I really can't recommend Poh Hock enough.

About Lucas

I am a professional woodwind instrumentalist, composer, and educator. I was a Fellow at the Brubeck Institute before completing a degree in Performance from Berklee College of Music in Boston.

I have been teaching privately in-person for 8 years, as well as over Skype for the last 3 years, so I have experience adapting the in-person lesson experience to an online format. I have taught at various music camps and schools across CA and given master classes for students ranging from elementary school up through the university level and beyond. I have developed my own curriculum to teach improvisation, but also adjust my teaching method to fit the learning style and goals of each student. I also make it a priority to teach my students how to continue to teach and challenge themselves, as I believe this is an important skill to have not just

in music, but in any context.

As a performer, I have had the opportunity to perform at such venues as the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Brubeck Festival, the Mingus Festival, Essentially Ellington, Dizzy's Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center, as well as other venues across the United States and Europe. I perform most often as a jazz musician, but have also studied classically on saxophone, flute, and clarinet, and have performed and recorded with groups in countless genres - including pop, funk, soul, R&B, video game music, film scores, folk music, and a host of others.

As a composer, I draw influence from jazz, classical, video game, contemporary, and many other musical traditions. I write and arrange music for a variety of contexts - feel free to look up my YouTube channel for some examples!

I look forward to partnering with you on your musical journey!

Cathy
"Best Singing Instructor I've Ever Had!!

I had such an incredible experience with Jillian. First off, let me just say what a warm, gentle, and kind person
she is. With other voice instructors I've felt intimidated and just really uncomfortable but it was really a joy being with Jillian. I didn't feel any sort of pressure to perform and she really took me step by step and truly believed in my potential. And she was so down to earth! I feel like I've known her for years. Just her being so happy and loving her job inspired me and I know that my skills have improved in just a few sessions. I cannot recommend Jillian enough!"

"Lawrence is an amazing instructor my kids have really gained a lot of progress in a short period of time and they really find joy in singing because of La
wrence. He really relates to the my kids (6 and 10) by allowing them to pick popular song and accompanies them on the piano or the guitar. He has a very kind way about him the kids really love him and look forward to their lesson. He is punctual and prompt in getting back to us on our questions/etc. The homework he assigns is simple to follow. Its the only extracurricular activity my kids have where they practice every day without being told - I truly believe this is because Lawrence makes it so fun for them."

can aid a wide range of subjects, from just starting out to experienced trumpeters. Additionally, Andrew is personable and kind, and will never say anything negative to his students. He is nothing but encouraging, and his talent with the trumpet shows that his students are in the right hands. I would recommend Andrew to anyone trying to improve their playing techniques because he is educated, talented, and humble."

Piano Tips and Techniques: Playing Glissandos

By Shanika

There are many musical terms that you will hear when learning to play any instrument, and the piano is no exception. You probably started off with terms related to tempo, such as largo and allegro, and progressed accordingly. You will learn new terms at every level, so maybe you have already heard the word glissando. Even if you haven’t heard of the term, you probably have heard a glissando in music. For example, Jerry Lee Lewis’s song "Great Balls of Fire" uses glissandos. Derived fr …
