Raymond C. San Diego, CA

About Raymond

I was fortunate to be professionally taught in the Romero style of classical guitar and have studied with great concert artists such as Robert Wetzel, Dr. Alexander Dunn, Celino Romero, Dr. Randy Pile, and Dr. Colin McAllister at Grossmont College, University of California San Diego, and Victoria Conservatory of Music. I have performed in numerous masterclasses including Antonio De Innocentis, Alexander Dunn, Gerd Wuestemann, Scott Wolf, Jason Vieaux, and Celino Romero. I have also performed with various ensembles including the Grossmont, VCM, UCSD, Villa Musica, and SDSU guitar ensembles. While I get quite a bit of enjoyment out of playing the guitar, I get greater enjoyment from passing my knowledge and experience of the instrument along to others. I have been teaching since 1999 ...

I took four lessons so far with Ray and found that he is not only a great teacher but also an amazing guitarist. He corrects my fingering to make it easier and gives me ideas of how to practice certain strums. He also teaches me effective ways how to improve my skills. He is very pleasant and easy to get along with and learn from. Strongly recommended.

Raymond is an excellent guitar instructor.

My first lesson with Raymond went exceptionally well. After listening to me play a little, Raymond immediately honed in on my biggest weakness, and stressed the vital importance of using the metronome to play the Giuliani Right Hand Studies correctly. HIs manner was disarming and he happily answered all my questions as I tried to "pick his brain" with the many questions I had re. technique. Thus, Raymond proved to be a very knowledgeable instructor, carefully analyzing my right hand technique and sharing from his extensive background the subtleties of modern classical guitar technique as opposed to the Segovia and Romero styles. Above all, his amiable demeanor and eagerness to help me become a better player was evident throughout the entire lesson. HIs respectful behavior was very conducive to learning, and I am very excited about my next lesson with Raymond!

Outstanding teacher, highly skilled pro

Ray does phenomenal work teaching guitar as a gifted instructor and inspiring performer. My wife and I cannot stress enough how far our son has come in playing skill as well as overall understanding and appreciation of music. In choosing an instrument, we wanted one our son could take with him wherever might go in life, so as to always have the company of his own live music he could pour himself into. Ray has made that vision true. Absolutely recommended!
Charles W. La Mesa, CA

About Charles

As far back as I can remember, music has been a central part of my life. I grew up in a musical family; my father a drummer and pianist, my mother a woodwinds player, and my brother a bassist, I have been surrounded by music as far back as I can recall. Upon graduating from San Diego SCPA, I became interested in recording and audio engineering, eventually working as 2nd engineer at Signature Sound in Clairemont, and main engineer at Proxy Music in Oceanside. This afforded me invaluable experience working with some of San Diego's finest musicians and recording artists. In 2008, I attended Berklee College of Music on scholarship - majoring in Professional Music with an emphasis on performance and composition. In 2011, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in Music.

Charlie is exactly what I was looking for. My situation is unique but that didn't phase him. By lesson's end, I felt more like a partner in this process than a student. And that's how I operate the best, and learn the most. I'm excited. After all these years, I'm finally going to learn to play the keys!

Michael and I have worked together for many years. His playing (on acoustic, electric, and fretless bass) is outstanding, his time impeccable, and his intonation and technique are impressive. Michael holds himself to the highest professional standards and has the respect of all his colleagues. He's always cheerful and encouraging, too - I highly recommend him as a teacher!

I have known and been performing professionally with Michael for many years now. In every musical situation, whether playing in a rock setting or playing a jazz gig
or doing a musical theatre type show, his time feel and musical sensibilities are always spot-on and to top it off, Mike always brings a really positive attitude in all his dealings with people he works with and his students-take it from me, if you're an aspiring bass or guitar student, Michael is the real deal!

I am not a bass player. I am an orchestra contractor who has had the pleasure of working with Michael for several years. He has been my "first call" since the first time I hired him. He is accomplished on acoustic bass, electric bass and fretless electric and I have not found a style that he can't nail including classical. He is always on time, prepared and always ready to make an extra effort in difficult performance situations.
Trevor H. El Cajon, CA

About Trevor

Every musician was first and foremost a fan of music. My love of music began when my mother took me to a performance of Beethoven's fifth symphony when, coincidentally, I was five. From that point, I started fervently listening to my mother's records (those are the huge, black monstrosities that people in the pre-historic used in place of iPods), followed closely by my father's CD collection. After a while, this ravenous desire of to know and feel music moved me to play an instrument. After a couple of false starts with the drums and violin, I found my true musical calling: the guitar. On January 25th 1995, on a whim, I began playing the guitar, and I have yet to put it down. Along the way I've picked up a number of friends for my guitar, including the bass, the ...

Trevor is a knowledgeable and capable teacher. I am not a beginning student, I have a degree in music and I have played guitar for many years. I was looking for someone to help take my playing in a different more refined direction. Trevor is excellent. He knew I had an understanding of music already and came to me with a nuanced and exciting curriculum.

He is personable, professional, and most of all, an excellent teacher.

\Trevor is a great teacher--and I hope to pick up the lessons later on after I get done with my doctors. When I started all I knew for sure was that the piano had white and black keys. It's always nice to learn something new. Thanks to Trevor. ED

My 11 year old daughter has been working with Jessica for several months now. She is amazing!!! My daughter just started doing musical theatre at school and I wanted a singing coach to help her to feel more comfortable on stage. Jessica not only has helped her with singing, but has coached her with monologues for auditions with the San Diego Junior Theatre. My daughter had her first audition with SD Junior theatre and because of the wonderful support and direction of Jessica, she was called back for a lead role...this on her first audition. My daughter was not cast as the lead, but was cast in the play. Jessica has given my daughter much more confidence to perform and speak in front of people, even if she never becomes a serious actress. This will help her in any career she chooses. I would highly recommend Jessica to anyone looking for a highly qualified and professional teacher. Every time we leave her private tutoring session, my daughter always says " I love her!!!"...not kidding.

Jessica is absolutely brilliant!

Her method has done what I can only describe as "unlocking" abilities.

Her friendly yet diligent explanation of techniques activated and energized my body in ways I've never experienced -- like some sort of soundwave-based yoga. I barely recognize myself when this bold sound blasts forth stoked by her encouragement -- It borders on the transcendent, but mostly it just feels amazing and is tremendous fun!

Otherwise, Jessica herself has the voice of an angel -- and she's also incredibly smart, patient, precise, knowledgeable, encouraging, sweet, interesting, charming, eclectic, funny, super-talented, and generally lovely.

I knew I was out of my league in asking such a seasoned, classically-trained pro for help perfecting my rock n' roll grit, but she can effortlessly condense her formidable wealth of knowledge into succinct pearls of wisdom to toss to swine like me. She is a much better teacher than I deserve, but I am nonetheless incredibly grateful and thankful for every hour I spent with her.

I'll be recommending Jessica to everyone I know and will keep coming back whenever I can.

I'm sure you'll love her too!

Sincerely,

Dan Drake

My 2 kids (ages 7 and 9) are taking piano lessons from Paul. We switched from another piano teacher about 6 months ago and the difference in both of my childrens' ability is substantial. I am simply amazed at what my kids can do on the piano with Paul as our piano teacher.

Paul is an excellent piano teacher. He is very patient with my kids and dedicated to developing them into "whole" musicians. He teaches them piano technique and theory so that my children will be able to create music with other musicians as well as have a repertoire of songs to play for others. The songs are varied and very interesting. He even has my son working on 'the blues'! He sends recordings over email to help my children hear what the music should sound like and encourages them to listen over and over to gain 'a feel' for how a piece should be played. With Paul, it feels like my children are his only students!

I recommend Paul to anyone who wants to learn or improve their skill on the piano.

Best Teacher to Learn the Piano With

I have been taking piano lessons from Paul Burd for two years now. I am an adult student that returned to the piano after an extended hiatus. I studied the piano and saxophone from elementary school through middle school, but Paul is the best teacher I have ever studied with. In the past two year, I have learned more about music and technique than I ever had when I was a child.

Mr. Burd is very encouraging while trying to bring out the best in his students. He focuses on technique and provides excellent constructive criticism. I really appreciate his ability to focus on my personal growth by tailoring his lessons to strengthen my weaknesses. His passion for music is inspirational, and his knowledge of music is expansive.

TL;DR, Mr. Paul Burd is an excellent and knowledgeable teacher. I highly recommend him to anyone with a desire to study music.

Found The Right Teacher

Paul has helped me improve my piano playing technique while exploring many new and exciting things about music. He is very patient, accommodating, understanding, and enthusiastic. He is a perfect teacher for adults or children who wish to have solid foundation with music and various instruments. I also found out that I enjoy coming to his peaceful and very well decorated studio located on a quiet street near Lake Murray in La Mesa. “Playing music is a lot more fun than just listening”. Learning music from a dedicated and knowledgeable teacher like Paul will help us play with joy, style, and passion.
