Music analysis, basics of composition

About Hillary
Hillary C. has been singing since joining the Sunrise Singers in elementary school. While singing in various choral groups, she also took private lessons to develop proper vocal technique. Her own students will appreciate the classical training she received as well as musical theater styles she has learned over the years.

At Washington and Lee University, Hillary participated in University Chorus, Chamber Singers, an a cappella group, and performed in musicals on stage. She studied music history, performance, and theory. Hillary earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Vocal Production and received the Choral Award upon graduation. She has performed with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, Dallas Symphony Chorus, and Incarnation church choir.

Hillary also studied piano for seven years during which time she won theory awards and was the star
pupil of her studio. She recently began a piano pedagogy class for continuing education credit.

Students under Hillary's tutelage can expect to gain an appreciation for classic works, learn basic music theory and ear training, and understand proper keyboard or vocal technique. She believes success comes from loving music and working hard to perform well.

Music theory can be a daunting and sometimes unpleasant element of learning an instrument, whether it's piano, guitar, bass, or your voice. I love teaching the elements of music theory in a fun, easy to understand way. If you want to improve your ability to understand and learn music theory, come see me!

About Lola
I have more than 30 years of musical experience. I’ve taught guitar, piano, bass, and theater in private schools, art schools and I’m currently teaching at Classic Axe Guitar Gallery in Gainesville, VA. I’ve taught over 250 students in all levels of experience, tailoring each lesson to fit each student, covering all genres, so that learning their instrument is fun. It’s been exciting to see some of them become music majors, some of them become performers, and some using their skills and gifts to teach others. I love teaching and sharing my musical knowledge with people of ALL ages. I believe anyone can learn music, with the right approach and encouragement. Nothing gives me more pleasure than watching my students accomplish more than they ever dreamed possible.

Music theory has to start from the basics...and I working with people at their own pace. I try to show students what they need to learn both independent of their instrument, plus with the instrument.

About Joe
I absolutely love teaching music! After over 20 years of teaching, performing, writing, and recording in all styles/genres, it continues to be a great adventure. It is a joy to pass this on to others...especially seeing my students that never touched the instrument going on to be very proficient players.

I take teaching seriously, but definitely try to make it enjoyable for the student. I studied classical guitar in college, but was playing everything from Van Halen to Jazz to Country & Blues before that. Currently, I'd consider myself a flat out musical mutt...enjoying anything and everything. The love of guitar has also expanded to a multitude of instruments that I record, gig, & teach with.

Detailed theory and application from beginner to advanced levels. My goal as an instructor is to keep the lessons fresh, fun, interesting, and to ultimately guide the students to better teach themselves as they gain experience and familiarity with the instrument and music. Students can have their lessons catered to the music and styles they wish to pursue. Lessons are tailored to each individual student so that we can build upon their strengths and focus on lessons to improve weaker areas. Students will learn how to build dexterity, use proper technique, and be creative. Every student has different goals, some really want to learn theory and read music. Others may simply want to learn to strum a few chords. Whatever the goal, I can provide the instructions to help the student succeed! Please contact me for any additional questions and further information.

Hi! My name is Miranda and I'm a Bassist and Music teacher. I've been playing and teaching Music for more than 15 years, and I've had students of all ages.

I'm Brazilian, and I've performed in several orchestras, both in Brazil and in the US. I'm also a singer, and I've sung in choirs and in Bossa Nova and Jazz bands.

A little bit about my experience as a Music teacher: I've taught at universities, conservatories, social projects, private studio, K-12... I love to teach Orchestra, and I'm a
conductor. I write arrangements for my orchestras now and then, mostly with a pedagogical intent.

I enjoy to teach kids very much, and I'm a certified Suzuki teacher. I also hold a standard certificate for Music (K-12), issued by the state of Texas, and I'm a member of TMEA. That doesn't mean I don't like to teach adults; my oldest student ever was 72! It's never too late to learn Music and to have fun doing it! If you want to give it a try, I can help you. Like other subjects I teach, we will begin at your current level and progress from there. If you're just starting to learn music theory and need to learn the basics - or even if you're more advanced and want to learn elements of voice leading, atonal theory, or even Schenkerian analysis - I will explain theoretical concepts, break them down, and ensure you understand each aspect of our lesson. I have also given music theory lessons as a way of tutoring students currently enrolled in an academic music theory course. Just let me know your current level and we'll design a plan for you!

About Jeremy
I've been composing and arranging music professionally for over 20 years. As Staff Arranger for the US Air Force Bands program, I have crafted selections ranging from classical/symphonic compositions to pop/rock/country arrangements, jazz & big band selections, and chamber music. My music has been performed by military worldwide, as well as university & high school/middle school bands, drum corps, professional symphony orchestras, and I spent a number of years creating brass ensemble "showstoppers" for the annual artist faculty concert at the National Trumpet Competition. Many of my original works are published, either through LudwigMasters Publications or Bandworks Publications.

Some notable performances of my music include the LA Philharmonic's 4th of July series at the Hollywood Bowl, performances at the Midwest Band & Orchestra Cl
inic, and music for the televised funeral service of President Ronald Reagan. I have also worked extensively as a conductor and have conducted groups ranging from beginning bands to professional orchestras.

I needed help knowing how to arrange a full band work for my Instrumentation Class project. I offered to pay him to do it for me but he wouldn't do that (haha). But he did sit with me and show me how to do it myself and I was happy I learned something. It wasn't great but if I had the desire to be an arranger then I would definitely study more with Jeremy.

Jeremy did a great job teaching me how to write an arrangement for a jazz band. I hadn't ever done anything like that and had no clue how to write rhythm parts. He gave me all the help I needed to know how to write chord symbols and notation for a rhythm section - lead sheets for the piano and guitar players, a bass part, and drum set parts. They all said the parts looked great. Thanks Jeremy!

Without Jeremy, I never would've gotten my Master's Degree. As I was preparing for my comprehensive exams in music performance, I had five pieces ranging from Medieval all the way through 20th century that had to be studied and analyzed for the music theory section of my exam. Jeremy was able to help me (and my entire study group) by teaching us in a knowledgeable, yet approachable way. He has a great deal of patience and a very kind demeanor. I wish I had encountered a teacher like him while in my undergrad music studies. He simplified so many of the concepts and ideas of music theory which really helped me to understand the analysis process and gave me full confidence when taking my comprehensive exams. He never made me feel stupid when asking questions and even when he had to explain the same concept over and over (which that happened often) he never lost his patience. He is so incredibly knowledgeable as a musician and such a delightfully kind person.

I have been speaking the language of music theory for more than 10 years, and I am fluent in both performance and compositional theory. If you are a beginner, we will focus on scales, keys, clefs, chords, and everything else that makes up the fundamental building blocks of music. For intermediate learners, we will consider more complex concepts such as non-chord tones, consonance and dissonance, advanced scales, and delve into the history of music theory. By the end of my lessons, you too will become fluent in the language of music.

About Joey
I am a violist, guitarist, and composer with nearly 10 years of experience. I recently received my Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Tampa, and wish to pass on my knowledge and skills to those who are interested and willing to learn.

Viola students will learn to maintain proper bow-hold and left hand positioning, and more advanced students will work on easy shifting of the left hand. Focus will be mainly on technical exercises and standard repertoire, including solo and ensemble pieces, though students always have freedom to choose to learn any piece within their ability.

Guitar students can learn either classical or acoustic styles, both of which will emphasize finger-picking technique. Technical studies are a large part of standard guitar repertoire, and will be the focus of lessons, along with any pieces that students
would like to learn.

I am almost entirely classically trained, and by this nature I will focus on more classical aspects of music, though I always love to teach more contemporary aspects of music and learn right along with my students!

I have written for albums, film, video games, even virtual reality! I love sharing my knowledge of music and tailoring my lessons to your goals. I am a composer and studied at Berklee College of Music. I have a extremely well rounded understanding of music theory and musical styles. Whether you are a musician playing in a band, an artist wanting to better your arrangements, or you are a complete beginner, I am positive I can help you develop your musicianship and have fun at the same time! I am looking forward to starting lessons with you!

About Daniel
I am a video game composer, drummer, and bassist. I have a wide range of experience from writing music and conducting a small orchestra to being a drummer in a funk rock band. I studied film and video game composition at Berklee College of Music and have been playing since I was 13.

I believe that music lessons should always be providing practical knowledge. As a student of mine studying music theory, you can expect not only to learn but truly utilize the information. You will become more aware of what is going on when you hear music. My main goal is that you gain greater control over your creative process and develop your "inner ear". I deeply believe that knowing music theory is an amazing tool to have as a musician.

I love teaching music theory: from the very basics to the farthest reaching topics.
I started off my musical car
eer at 13 as a self taught drummer and have a foundation in rhythmic studies. I later received a formal education at Berklee where I studied composition and learned how to develop melodies and harmony. Furthermore, I am proficient in ear training, sight reading, orchestration and arrangement, music synthesis, and music technology. In a musical world where rules are broken and ever changing, I believe in building lessons around your interests and aspirations.

I am passionate about a wide range of different kinds of music. Here are some of my biggest influences: Red Hot Chili Peppers, David Bowie, Yoko Shimomura, Steve Reich, Frank Zappa, and Mahavishnu Orchestra.
