Bass guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are part of the basic vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Intervals are also basic vocabulary of the musical language and progress into chords, and yes, bass players think and play chords.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the student's goals. However, I strongly encourage learning to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play, especially when interacting with other musicians or performing for an audience.

Having performed jazz, funk, rock, pop, blues, and classical among other genres, I use the fluidity between these inform each of my lessons. Whether a student is a beginner looking to play their favorite song on the radio, an intermediate looking for some music theory to give them more options in their playing, or an advanced player looking for improvisatory techniques, I tailor each session to the desires of each student and their learning style.

"For every good bassist, there's a dozen great guitarists." Someone said this to me when I was a young wannabe rocker, I have found it to be true. The bass is the part of the song that everyone really hears. If lead guitar is the icing, bass guitar is the cake. Learn how chords work, and how to map them easily, and let your creativity take over from there.

About Scotty

I am an established performer having played in such bands as BigDamnCrazyWeight, Bring Back Dad and most recently, guitarist for Guadalupe Blue. I studied Music Theory at New Mexico State University with the amazing Dr. Don Hardisty and Composition with Dr. Warner Hutchison. I am passionate about m

overall good teacher

I've been taking lessons from Scotty for over a year and have learned a lot about theory, form, and style. Had taken lessons from other instructors and felt that I should had been further along after 1 year. One hour lesson time is perfect for me and I always leave wishing I had more time.

Great Teacher

Great teacher takes time to cover theory of music, and does hour lessons unlike most teachers in town who do 30min lessons. Have taken lessons from other teachers in the past, and all they do is teach you songs without explaining the reasoning behind it. Have learned more in the last few months then I’ve learn in years with other teachers.

"I have known and worked with Shon Morgan for some time and I can 100% recommend him for lessons - whether bass, drums, music theory, whatever. Shon has the educational AND professional background to take any musician to the next level - even if you have your degree and have been playing for years. And of course he is ideal for beginners and intermediates with a patient and systematic approach. Give him a try, you won't regret it."

Before and after bookong, he was communicative and flexible on scheduling. My friend just took her first lesson and could not contain her excitement! Said she learned more in 45 minutes than she had in for plus years. She plans to continue learning from him. Thanks Carlos!"
