I took lots of Music Theory classes in college. I have written 2 progressive rock albums with lots of chords and studied Jazz which is loaded with music theory. We can work on getting a great handle on what the music is doing theory wise.

About Rob

Make sure you contact me about scheduling. I have other students and a job that sometimes changes week to week. I may have other times available. Let me know.

Initially I was a complete beginner. I've been studying with Rob for a couple of months now. I think I'm making good progress and certainly a lot of that is Rob's doing. Very personable and flexible, he's really taught me a lot and is really good at teaching in a way that has me progressing steadily and not being overwhelmed by such a challenging instrument.
Jeff
great first lesson. Personable and informative.
Lin
Identified many of my errors right away, has given instruction on how to correct. Have noticed definite improvement each week, and given new skills each week to practice .(I'm not likely to pass this pattern in the near future!)

I studied Music Theory since I was in High school. To some it does take a while to grasp. There is classical theory and there is also modern/contemporary theory which differ. There are music charts and scores. There is reading and writing music. There is harmony. We will learn and practice these things and get you on your way to becoming a pro.

Music has many different elements that comprise it. These include but are not limited to: pitch, pulse, rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, arrangement, timbre/color, expressive qualities (dynamics and articulation), and form or structure. From these basic building blocks, all theoretical material that can be studied has come to be. This material when understood and employed can further your growth as a musician exponentially, and can assist you in writing music, sight-reading, as well as virtually any creative activity involving music.

I have spent half my life learning about the science and the math behind music (why music sounds the way it does, and how to write music to emulate thoughts, feelings, and intellectual ideas). THIS is music theory... to understand how music works on paper, and have the ability to integrate that knowledge into our own musical work. Theory can be applied in ones study of music, and in writing original compositions. It is incredibly useful in playing any ...

I would highly recommend Jonathan as a music teacher. Jonathan is absolutely passionate about music, which is evident by his enthusiastic and energetic teaching techniques. He is very patient with my five year old and encourages her to get her very best effort. Jonathan customizes the music and lessons for my daughter’s skill level while at the same time provides challenges to keep the learning process interesting. In a short period of time, my daughter's keyboard playing abilities have dramatically increased. I am very grateful to Jonathan for making learning fun for my daughter, who always looks forward to her lessons!

Jonathan has made a great impression with my son. He displays a great combination of patience and encouragement with Nick. I have seen an improvement in his trumpet skills as well as his confidence.

Music. What does it really mean? It's nice to be able to sing songs, but what good is singing if we don't understand music. This course is for the "singer" an individual who is interested in learning how to read and write music.

Pitch. Rhythm. Scales. Intervals. Chords. Harmony. If you're serious about music, these are fundamental concepts you need to understand and master.

If you love music, but don't know anything about music theory, you need to take this "one on one" online class. I will start from the very beginning step by step. Hope to see you online.

Happy learning!!

This is NOT your typical music theory class! More accurately, it is the theory behind music production and making records. If you are a music creator, but struggle getting the ideas in your head to come out of the speakers, this course is for you! Maybe you already have the vibe you're looking for, but don't know how to keep it engaging for the listener... I can equip you with concepts that will unlock creativity and inspiration!

"We hired Brian to work with our barely 3 year old to play the drums we got him for his birthday. He loves it! We don’t have any grand aspirations for him, but he likes to bang around and we wanted to give him some direction to see if he latched on to it. Our main objective is that he has fun. Brian is GREAT with him and he looks forward to it every week. 10/10!"

How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …
