I took lots of Music Theory classes in college. I have written 2 progressive rock albums with lots of chords and studied Jazz which is loaded with music theory. We can work on getting a great handle on what the music is doing theory wise.

Initially I was hesitant to do on-line, but Yulia had the materials and the expertise to get our daughter started learning mallets for band class in middle school. Our daughter really looked forward to her lessons. Yulia engaged with our daughter in a very fun and still professional way. Lessons were well-planned and they included a plan of practice for our daughter leading up to her next lesson. We are thankful that we found such a great teacher through TakeLessons!

I have been teaching privately and in colleges/schools for over 15 years. For all levels, I will help you develop excellent music theory for all instruments and voice.

For advanced/intermediate students, I also teach jazz improvisation, if you’re interested! Please bring in the music and songs you want to work on. I believe lessons should be fun and interesting while you learn great stuff, too!

About Dan

Hi, I’m a professional tenor and soprano saxophonist. I graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelors in Jazz Performance. I also have an MA in Jazz History and Research from Rutgers University. I enjoy helping students to develop improved technique, sight reading, and musicality.

Dan is a great teacher and musician. He is highly knowledgeable as well as motivating.
I started playing saxophone again after years of not playing.
But playing on my own quickly got me to a level where I didn't make much progress anymore and started to lose motivation.
Dan picked me up where I was and got me back into practicing.
He is very good in structuring the lessons and the practice to fit your goals and skills.

Dan is really a great teacher.. firstly, he’s personable, friendly and creates rapport with the student, By asking your interests he makes the lessons about YOU by accommodating those interests and the WAY you want to learn.

I’m an adult and have no interest in traditional approaches to learning an instrument; I’ve been there, done that and found it not only terribly uninspiring (twinkle little star anyone?) but In every way overly difficult by trying to mix too many skills together at the same time. Before you even have a relationship with and “feel for” your instrument and have the technical skills to play it even half way decently, you’re trying to understand how long to hold a dotted eighth note! This is the reason a lot of people quit playing before they even get started…

Dan knew exactly what I was talking about, met me there and then proceeded to get me to do more in one lesson than I probably would have done in a week on my own, and in the way I want to learn!! He knows how to meet you where you are, find your self prescribed limits and then push you through them! He’s truly skilled in all the ways a teacher needs to be effective with a student!

Chris took the time to find out my goals and where I was at as far as skill level, then tailored the lessons to be fun yet challenging. Looking forward to more lessons.

Outstanding teacher. I have had literally 20 teachers in my 40 years of on and off guitar playing and Chris is by far the best. He works to you and your capabilities and not to his pre-planned lessons. You feel no guilt and want to learn and push yourself more. I have progressed more with him than any instructor so far. How to Change the Key of a Song With and Without a Computer

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa.  For singers, transposition feels fairly …
