Private Classical Piano Teacher

I have been teaching piano for over 25 years. Each student is unique; so I customize the lessons and repertoire to suit each student, utilizing method books and/or different styles of music depending on the student's interest. I always include music theory, note comprehension, rhythm and practice tips. With Classical piano, more emphasis is placed on scales and finger strengthening exercises with Hanon.

About Amber

I am an experienced, enthusiastic music instructor, who started playing piano around 8 years of age and participated in many musical activities. I received my Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Massachusetts, majoring in Music Education (voice and piano). I have appeared around the world as a soloist singing jazz and pop, including the Blue Note, NYC, and appeared as a guest soloist at the 2000 Southern California Summer Special Olympics. I also participated in ensemble groups such as the Masterworks Chorale in NYC, and the Verdi Opera Chorus of Southern California; and currently I volunteer at the Senior Center leading/accompanying the Sing-Alongs.

Inspired by my love of music, I have been teaching piano and voice for over 25 years from NY to LA and now Orange County. In conjunction with my teaching skills, I have

excellent communication skills, patience and enthusiasm, and work well with children and all ages. I feel that music is an important part of education, and it aids in the development of cognitive and motor skills. And most of all, it is fun and rewarding, and a skill to last a lifetime!

Amber was very knowledgeable. I took some free Youtube tutorials lessons but was not able to tell if I did everything correctly. Amber pointed out when I blew out too much air and showed me how to do it right. I look forward to have more lessons with her.

Every problem has a solution. Let me help you find it. My specialty is narrowing down the exact root issue that the student is having, which seems like an obstacle and to offer practical solutions to solve this issue. This allows for the student to reach their goals. Please see all the subject specialties.

About Howard

I enjoy working with complete beginners as well as seasoned professionals. I teach classical and popular styles. I specialize in teaching learning how to learn, sight-reading, technique, improvisation, chord-reading, songwriting. One of my specialties is to help you break through your most stubborn blocks. These might be the strangest things that you think no one would ever understand -- fear of playing in public, feeling like your left hand is uncoordinated, practice procrastination, pain when playing, pain when reading notation, memory issues, musical dyslexia... ANYTHING. I can help you and I will never make you feel embarrassed.

*** In Studio or Online ***
Of course it is more enjoyable if you can have lessons in person. But with modern technology, live online lessons come in a close second. I've been teaching for 40 years and I've been doing online lessons for about 12 years. I'm located in West Hills, which is a suburb of Los Angeles. If you are not local, using Skype with a webcam works out surprisingly well. I have students in Sydney, London, Hong Kong and many cities throughout the US.

*** Use a Piano or a Keyboard for Practicing ***
I am not fussy if you use a keyboard but it needs to be a "weighted action" keyboard, so that it feels similar to a real piano. Ideally, you should also have a pedal and a stand if you are using an electronic keyboard.

*** Unconventional Approach ***
Each student is taught with a customized approach. You get to tell me what areas you want to focus on. Sometimes there may be a block or something that is a weakness that you need to bolster. Sometimes it is a narrow niche within music that you want to give your attention to. One way that I'm unconventional is that I actually have found that it is NOT better if you practice every day. I recommend that you build in about three days of rest per week. Just like people who work out at the gym learn that the off days are when the muscles regenerate, the same is true for your brain. This allows your subconscious mind to do its job and your progress will actually be faster, not slower. Another example of my unique approach is how I treat beginners. Even though you may not yet read music very well or at all, it doesn't mean that you can't start working concurrently on a more advanced piece. This is because READING notation is a comparatively slow process, but why should we restrict your ability to play something that you love to your rate of reading music? Usually, our FINGER TECHNIQUE develops much faster than our READING so I'm happy to guide you on one or two more difficult pieces and help spoon-feed it to you, bit by bit, "by rote."

*** Areas of Focus ***
-Finger Technique. How to play fast with ultimate control.
-Sight-Reading How to Read Music at Sight

*** Celebrity Piano Teacher ***
Over the years, I've taught many pro musicians and celebrities. (Takelessons prohibits me from mentioning their names here.)

*** Howard's Teachers Go Back To Beethoven ***
I feel grateful that my own training included top teachers of both the “German School” and “Russian School” of piano technique. Generally, the German School teaches how to play with close-to-the-key hand placement preparation and fingering efficiency, and is known for great speed and accuracy. The Russian School teaches how to play with gravity and relaxation and is known for beautiful tone production. Each approach has its strengths and weaknesses. In my own playing and teaching, I have incorporated the good aspects of each and have discarded the bad. The result is a blueprint for biomechanical efficiency and beautiful sound, making it the best of both worlds. Please see the photo of the "piano lineage chart."

Howard's approach is patient while at the same time he actually leads my son forward - not just listening to what he practiced that week. Howard does not make the weekly lesson a "test" but rather a session to work together and my son enjoys the lessons instead of worrying if he prepared enough.

We moved from Los Angeles so we chose to transition from lessons in Howard's house to weekly lessons online - it continues to work beautifully.

Howard can accommodate any style of student - I know because I took lessons from Howard myself until my work built up too much to continue.

I recommend Howard without any reservation.

Art of all forms, whether it be through painting, dance, sculpting, music, visual media or design, allows us to catch a glimpse of what human expression is capable of showing us and making us feel. Art transcends the reality that we live in day to day, and transports and inspires us to seek beyond what we know. Through music, a medium of sound created with instruments and technology, we are able to mitigate human suffering and create positive energy for the world. Music exists as a means by which we can free ourselves from the limitations of society and reality so that we can coexist in harmony and understanding; increasing the human potential for happiness. Sophia is absolutely the best piano teacher ever! She's punctual, kind, and patient. She genuinely cares that I understand not just how to play the piano, but also the theoretical apparatus behind the music that I'm learning to play. I will take lessons from her until I'm taking a dirt nap.

As an adult trying to get back into playing piano it was hard for me to find the right fit with a piano teacher. Sophia displays a perfect balance of encouragement, intelligence, and professionalism in our lessons. Her hours are flexible, and she has so much to offer and talk about with whatever is I want to learn. Thank you Sophia!

When I started playing Jazz there was hardly any reliable resource available
to teach me where I grew up. Through a vast hard-earned experience both as a professional pianist/keyboardist and teacher, I have created a system of learning that saves students countless hours of wrong practice and frustration understanding the theory side. Many times before the start
of a semester at the Jazz College where I teach I tell my students
that my course syllabus can be summarized in 2 words:
Applied, Theory. Those concepts connected when taught and applied to
students through an efficient system of enjoyable practice leads to students playing Jazz sometimes in 3-6 months!

Piano lessons are so much fun! The piano is a wonderful instrument because you can be successful on it and even play a song by the end of your first lesson. I like to tailor my lessons to each student’s personality, learning style, and what they hope to accomplish on their instrument. Lessons are always fun and if you put in the hard work there is no doubt you will go far!

About Rachael

Hey there! I’m Rachael and I LOVE teaching music. I have been playing the violin and piano for two decades now and teaching for almost as long. I attended the University of Georgia and earned my Bachelor’s degree in music education in 2011. I have taught general music, middle and high school orchestra, and have most recently focused my attention on teaching private lessons. I really enjoy one on one time with my students. It allows me to figure out the best and most effective way to help YOU! I generally teach from a set curriculum for violin and piano but I am open to incorporating music that you may want to learn. I like to keep my lessons light and fun so expect to hear some bad jokes and share a few laughs. You get out of lessons what you put into them. Practice outside of lessons is a must to keep things rolling along. I hope to conn

ect with you soon!

Let's get started! I am an easygoing and ridiculously patient piano instructor with 7 years of experience playing piano professionally for gigs and weddings. Whether you're looking to finally finish learning that tricky piano piece, or wondering how to improvise and play by ear, I will help get you there! All ages and playing levels are welcome.

About Tommy

I have been playing piano professionally for the last 7 years. I also teach piano, guitar, and ukelele. In High School, I toured and played music with my family band, and then completed 3 years of a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance. I love composing and playing by ear, as well as performing memorized pieces. I play all kinds kinds of gigs, from weddings and parties to street performing during the Christmas season.
My favorite things about teaching are helping students find their personal style, and helping them learn the surprising rewards of consistent practice and a patient teacher. I treat each student as a new and exciting challenge, with unique gifts and abilities.
