I am a Lawrence native, and my piano studio is in my home. I have bounced between Lenexa and Lawrence a few times in my adult life, and I moved back to Lawrence 3 years ago, this time to stay.
I began classical piano studies at 8 years old, in the private studio of a local concert pianist. I participated in recitals, concerts, camps and master classes, and in the 7th grade I started performing in a variety of venues, as an accompanist for vocalists, instrumentalists, choirs and musicals.
I have a B.A. and M.A. from KU, and acquired my Kansas State Teaching License at Washburn University. I am classified as "highly qualified" in the fields of Psychology, Biology and General Science. I taught school in Topeka, then in the Shawnee Mission Public Schools. My graduate degree is in Human Development, and
I taught Child Behavior & Development classes at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. I believe I am a unique piano teacher, having studied children and young adults and how they learn. I encourage my students to work towards their goals, but I'm patient and know when a skill is currently beyond the child's grasp due to his or her individual development. Every child learns and develops differently, so each student's lessons are highly individualized.
*** Lesson Details *** I have a relaxed teaching style, a sense of humor, and lots of patience! I absolutely love the one-on-one teaching experience I get with teaching private lessons. Students tend to feel welcome and comfortable in my home studio. A beginning student will be surprised to be reading and playing music within just a few weeks!
Curricula: For beginning piano curriculum, I like the Piano Adventures series by Faber & Faber. I also use a series called A Dozen A Day, technical exercises for the piano which teaches a little theory along the way, but makes it fun! For older students, I like Czerny and Hanon exercises to strengthen fingers and hands. I focus on reading music, and I work on sight-reading skills with adolescents and young adults. There are all kinds of on-line resources that I consult for ideas. Lessons are a combination of theory, learning the keyboard, and learning to read music.
For intermediate piano students, I will determine their level of musical understanding and design an individualized curriculum to address areas of improvement, and to build on each student's strengths.
In addition to the mechanics of music, I try to instill an appreciation for all types and genres of music in my students. I strongly believe that the most competent and interesting musicians are the ones who are familiar with music from all walks of life.
Lastly, I do most of the choosing of music for students to study. There are lots of things to consider when choosing a piece or a book for a young pianist to study. But I do like to explore, and am open to suggestions from my students. It's easier to practice when you are playing something you really enjoy. Not every song makes a good piano piece, but I will work with you!
*** Studio Equipment *** Piano, Guitar, Computer, Music Software

We signed up with Marci for beginner lessons with my 6 year old daughter and couldn't be happier! She is fantastic with children! She is very patient and has many creative ways to motivate, engage and work with young children on their level. One of the many things I love most about working with Marci is that she established a relationship with my daughter which helped tremendously in bringing her "out of her shell". Marci has provided age and level appropriate materials that my daughter loves to play from! Marci, thank you for being such a wonderful teacher!

I've been teaching and performing professionally for over 15 years. I have my BA in music and business. I have had some amazing experiences along the way. I've worked with world renowned vocal coaches, sang at Carnegie Hall, and played on various cds to raise money/awareness for charity projects. I'm grateful for all of this, but I love working with students on their music most of all. It delights me to see a student have an "aha" moment where they realize that they have what it takes to be great. I'd love to work with you, but if I don't I hope you reach your goals and have fun doing it ! ~ Carrie Jo ~
*** Lesson Details *** I'm a laid back teacher but you will definitely learn
a lot. I just believe if it starts to not be fun, what's the point? Music isn't just about perfect theory and note placement it's about enjoyment. That's why I tailor make every lesson specifically based on my student's goals. I have students that like a more traditional approach so I use standard method books with them. I also have students that want to learn how to play by ear so we use a less traditional method and I teach them chord structures and how to move around easily on their instrument. My favorite thing to teach is vocal lessons but I love teaching piano and guitar also.
*** Studio Equipment *** The In-Studio lessons are taught on an upright piano or acoustic/electric guitar. Student should bring own guitar. No pets. Waiting room out front for parents.
*** Travel Equipment *** They need their own instrument.
*** Specialties *** I've performed at Carnegie Hall and I've had the opportunity to work with world renowned vocal coaches. I offer that as well as techniques that I've developed to help you reach your goals quickly and with great skill !
Carrie is great! She is very patient, positive and encouraging. We have three members of our household taking lessons from her, and she tailors the lessons for the individual goals, levels and interests of each of us.

Over the past five years, I have successfully helped students prepare for a variety of courses and standardized tests. However, I am most passionate about helping students prepare for the LSAT, on which I scored a 174 (99th percentile). As a LSAT tutor, I specialize in teaching students how to develop a deep understanding of each question type.

I have been teaching math professionally since 1998 and have helped significantly boost students’ SAT math scores as much as 250 points as well as helped his students seen multi-grade improvements in math classes. My approach to teaching is unique: recognizing the student's weaknesses early in the teaching process and lay emphasis on strengthening basic concepts. My ability for easily explaining how different areas of math are interconnected allow the basics to be more sticky and contextual. I graduated with Honors from a premier engineering college in India and have worked in both the tech and education sectors. In my free time, I enjoys playing racquetball, singing, and am an avid math puzzle enthusiast.

"Colin helped me through the last semester of IB Calculus. He would email me two days before each lesson so he was prepared with a relative lesson plan fo
r our hour long weekly session of review. He even created a video explaining a topic I was stuck on and sent it to me after our weekly session. I wouldn’t have gotten an A in the last semester without him. Thanks Colin."

When your child needs a little extra help with math, but doesn't seem interested in flashcards, worksheets, or other methods of learning, you need to be a little creative. If he or she enjoys sports, why not take the opportunity to introduce some math practice games while watching or playing the sport?
Any sport can be turned into a math practice game - you just need to find a way to sneak it in without letting your child know you're trying to promote some math time. Below are some ideas to get …
