About Kara

Kara is an incredibly versatile teacher with the knowledge and experience to help young singers successfully reach their personal goals. Through my four years of lessons with Kara, I have learned: different techniques to better my vocal tone, how to better my presence on stage, exercises that help expand my range, and much more. Not only this, but she has personally exposed me to different performance opportunities and auditions. Kara has given me all the resources I need for a performance career and helped prepare me for my audition that admitted me to The Moore's School of Music. You'll never meet a more kind, talented performer. I am incredibly grateful to have spent my time with this wonderful teacher.

Mrs. Covey is honestly such an amazing vocal coach! When I first started lessons, my voice was very “weak” and not at its fullest potential. Not only did Mrs. Covey help me find my voice, but she expanded my range so much and she improved my tone which was my biggest weakness. Because of Mrs. Covey I was first alternate to the all state choir, and it a rating of a 1 at state solo and ensemble every year I’ve competed! Mrs . Covey is the reason for my choral successes in my high school year and on top of all that, whenever I just need someone to talk to shes always there!

Kara is a great teacher and a very experienced and knowledgeable singer. In the year and a half that I have taken lessons from her, she has helped me make big improvements in the strength and quality of my voice. She is extremely reliable and has a systematic approach to teaching that allows me to continue to build upon the skills that I have learned. Kara has educated me in techniques that I can apply to many genres of music and that prevent me from damaging my voice. Just as importantly, she is very kind and supportive to her students and wants to help each of them reach their full potential.

I have no strings background and I thoroughly enjoyed my first Ukulele lesson with Aleksis. Not only did we go through techniques, we also got to play a Bob Marley song at the end of the lesson. Who knew it was possible to play an entire song on the first lesson?! It was really fun and I really look forward to our next lesson.

RE: Advanced Classical Singers (College and older...and in some cases High School)

ALL CLASSICAL SINGERS after time will slowly chip away at all languages and classical styles. It depends on the level. Fach presentation is important. We will pick out relevant arias that reflect this. Mozart, Bel Canto, French, German, American Opera etc; (ARIAS only).

For some, we will want to have a mix of arias and art songs in Italian, French, German and English (minimum).

Having representation in all languages is important so you are ready for any audition requirement.

RE: Young Classical Singers (Middle School-High School)

Serious classical singers of all voice types will work from the 24 Italian Arias book.

Other repertoire depends on voice type & development expectations/goals.

Young sopranos will get some Debussy Chansons as it sits quite a bit higher & it's great for technique. With young mezzos, we will find pieces that address the chest & mixed voice head-on. ...

If you are an advanced student and want to further improve your operatic singing, then Mary is definitely an excellent teacher for the following main reasons:
1) Experienced - she is a talented singer herself who knows what to do to fix the problems.
2) Repertoire selection - she recommended many arias that were challenging, but super beneficial for developing my singing techniques.
3) Clear instruction - Mary recognises when you making good progress and we have a very constructive result during the lessons.
There are many more that can be listed... I just want to say that I feel lucky to study with Mary and highly recommend her to other singers who wish to develop his/her singing to the next level.
Triplett
We had a nice discussion about singing and set a goal to start practice. Looking forward to the next lesson.
Lynn Woodard
Mary is an extremely talented vocalist and a very gifted teacher. I came in with no training whatsoever and was comfortable with her immediately. She is constantly challenging me to stretch beyond my comfort zone, which has made a huge difference in my vocal range and my confidence. She is very knowledgable about the mechanics of singing and searches for just the right analogies for my untrained brain to get my "singing parts" into the correct position to the produce the best sound. She is also patient and encouraging. She really is amazing and I couldn't be happier with my lessons and progress. Highly recommend Mary!

"I am so thankful for Maria. Coming out of college I didn't quite know what to do. I began taking lessons with Maria based on a referral but honestly wasn't expecting much. I will always feel horrible about that because she is the best thing that could have happened to me. I've grown more in the past two years than I did for the 5 years in undergrad. I've been offered a full ride to University of Houston next year but I will continue to sing her praises and work with her whenever I am back in town. I'm dreading that our last lesson is approaching because I couldn't have gotten where I am without her."

"I can't imagine where I'd be if I had not crossed paths with Fawn. She is one talented woman. I am a coloratura soprano with a degree in vocal performance from the New England Conservatory of Music; when I met Fawn I was struggling to simply keep my head above water as I attempted to readjust to life in the city after spending several years recovering from a traumatic vocal chord injury. I had tried everything traditional Western medicine had to offer as well as several alternative healing methods but nothing was working to get me back on track towards the performing career that I wanted. Many practitioners that I had met with previously had at most a shallow understanding of the unique and very complicated physical and emotional demands of a professional operatic career and I was dispirited, hopeless and seriously considering giving up the thought of ever performing at all much less professionally again.
Since I began studying with her last summer, she has helped me find a physical and mental equilibrium that I previously thought was unattainable. In addition, I have gained an invaluable and specific practical understanding of my personal challenges and strengths as a direct result of the unique and deeply insightful ways in which she handles any problem I bring to her. In a few short months my life and outlook has changed tremendously. I had the courage to audition for and consequently booked my first professional gig since my injury, began the process of planning a production of an original composition and have been encouraged by my teacher to seriously consider singing for both national and international auditions next year. If there is a "Vocal Whisperer" Fawn is it.
To be truly understood as a performing artist (and one dealing with a vocal injury while attempting a career, is a rare and amazing experience. Not only is she amazingly well versed in several nutritional, spiritual and physical disciplines but her unique ability to adjust them into a specialized program for your specific situation and personality type make the service she offers invaluable and like nothing else I've ever experienced. Not only is she deeply empathic, compassionate, giving and sympathetic but she is also refreshingly disciplined in her ability to organize you and get to the heart of the matter. She tailors your lessons in a way that makes them easily accessible and memorable. She has the rare ability to inspire you. She never makes you feel judged, she never 'shames' you into compliance (like my other coaches did), but instead Fawn encourages and wins you over with a warm and comforting sense of humor and grace.
I am deeply grateful to have had and continue to have the opportunity to work with such an original, remarkable and talented individual. I can't recommend her highly enough and personally consider my lessons an essential part of a professional vocal career for anyone who wants to sing correctly and safely (and) stay safe, healthy, happy and sane."

8 Beautiful Opera Arias for Beginner Singers

It is always exciting when a vocal student is ready to start studying his or her first operatic aria! One of the best things about being a classical singer is knowing you have so many great years ahead of you. After all, you’re considered in your prime in your 40s. That being said, realize that the voice you have now and the repertoire you’ll first study will be very, very different from what you sing later on in your career. It’s absolutely crucial that you sing repertoire that is …
