Zachary H.

Stony Brook, NY

About Zachary

I believe teaching is a partnership between the teacher and the student. I am a friendly, laid-back person, I’m very patient, and I’m 100% there for my students, so you or your child can enjoy a comfortable, welcoming learning environment. To make great music, all I ask in return is an open attitude and a commitment to appropriate amounts of regular practice. With those things, almost anything is possible!

My teaching philosophy is totally centered around your individual needs. I understand that people approach the study of music at various ages, with different abilities, goals, and desi
res. I see my role as a teacher as one where I use my knowledge and experience to help you along your path. Once we establish your goals, then I can teach you what you need to know to get there.

No matter what your musical dreams entail, you will need a solid technical foundation to build upon, as well as a musical ear to help you create and collaborate. I specialize in helping students learn and improve upon both of these skills. If you are just starting out, my goal is to get you playing REAL music as soon as possible. You’ll be amazed by what you can play after just a few lessons! For intermediate students, depending on your goals, we might study chords and theory, ear training to hear song structure and chords, fretting technique and scales, different types of right hand sound production, different genres of music, or many other topics.

It’s even more important to me that our study builds your confidence, opens you up to the vast world of music, and teaches you about yourself. This personal growth, attained with consistent time and effort, is the most meaningful aspect of musical study. Helping students like you along that path is my favorite thing about teaching!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide sheet music, books and amplification, as well as my own instrument. The student would need to have their own instrument and a music stand and amplification, if applicable.

*** Specialties ***
I have an uncommonly wide breadth of experience in many genres of music. I studied both classical and jazz music intensively at the conservatory level, and have a lot of rock band experience from various projects in high school and college. I've played just about every other style at some point, from bluegrass to R&B.

A great teacher

Zach was a great teacher! He picked things that would clearly help me grow as a player, and gain greater facility on the instrument. We had a couple snafus scheduling where I might wait for 10+ minutes for a lesson to start.

*** Lesson Details ***
The very first lesson is a process of establishing professional contact between a student and a teacher; couple of exercises will be given in order to figure out the current level of a student. Then recommended material will be chosen.

You may also require what repertoire you would like to work on (either for beginners or advanced students). I have all the books/scores for Suzuki Violin School, Maia Bang, etc. I also work with Russian Violin Books (ex. "Yuniy Skripach" ("Young Violinist")).

I also work with ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome students, and study the subject seriously,

***Lesson Schedule***
May vary, depending on convenience of both the student and the teacher. I will always do my best to find the best time that would work for you. So please, do not look at my availability schedule, it is all very wobbly! Just allow me to contact you, and I am sure we will figure something out!

My first lesson was great. We reviewed my bowing, fingering technique and covered the different primary strokes. Anna was very upbeat and patient with my scratchy attempts! I look forward to developing a solid base of good technique and building upon it with further instruction.

Joanna is a remarkable human and an extraordinary teacher. Her technical expertise is matched by her care for protecting the human body and sustaining long-term growth. Moreover, her passion and knowledge of the music, of the rich history and context, and of the soul behind it puts her over the top as one of the finest instructors and performers I have ever come in contact with.

Joanna is a world-class musician and humanitarian who is humble, down to earth, and genuinely loves what she does in helping people to excel and to grow with their music. Under Joanna's instruction I flourished and have seen this be the case for countless others.

Joanna is an exceptional violin teacher. She is everything that I was looking for in a music teacher for my child. She provided the perfect balance of challenging and nurturing my child. My child studied with Joanna for 10 years and those years were the absolutely best years in my child's musical development. Any student studying with Joanna will benefit on so many levels. There are not enough words to express how wonderful a teacher she is.
