Phillip F.

Rural Hall, NC

About Phillip

Pianist and singer Phillip F. started learning to play the piano at age 6. Growing up he competed and placed highly in many competitions including playing with the Symphony Orchestra in his home town of Spartanburg, SC after winning it's concerto competition at the age of 17. In college he took piano from Dr. Charles Fugo at the University of South Carolina and also started taking voice lessons from Tonya Currier and Walter Cuttino. While still in college he worked with The South Carolina Opera company for a season as a member of the ensemble and as Chorus Master.
Since college, he has work
ed with different theater and opera companies as a lead actor and as a musician.
He has many years of teaching experience with piano at all experience levels.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have experience teaching since 1995 while I was still in college. I primarily use Alfred and Bastien piano methods for beginners. I teach how to read music, understand the theory behind the music, and the technique needed in a patient atmosphere at the pace of the student. I also teach you how the piano works and the different types of pianos as well as the history of keyboards used for different classical music. The lessons are geared toward the goals of the student no matter what level is desired.
In teaching singing, I will teach you the basics necessary to create a healthy and relaxed sound through technique. With experience singing music ranging from classical to contemporary church music to musical theater, I can teach you how to use the voice in a way that will promote a long time of singing without adding stress to the voice. I will work with any style of music and will give you the technique and confidence needed to become a better singer.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Walk into house, on left is a room with a piano and books with big windows to look out through room. Pianos are an upright piano and an Alesis Synthesiser. Seating is available for parents as well.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have a piano or an electric keyboard at home for piano lessons. For voice lessons a keyboard is not required but is helpful.

*** Specialties ***
I primarily teach piano in a classical style using either Bastien or Alfred Methods for piano lessons.
For voice, I teach all my students to sing in a way that will be the most beneficial to the health of their voice. Doing this is helpful to all styles of singing.

Phillip is awesome, he is by far the best vocal instructor I've ever had!

I'm a 27 year old male who decided to start up voice lessons again to complement my guitar playing. I'm so glad that I chose Phillip as my instructor. He knows more about singing and how to sing than any instructor I've ever had. He's great!

Willy M.

Winston Salem, NC

About Willy

Willy has been teaching music for more than a decade, carrying on the tradition he learned when his father taught him piano as a youth. He is a multi-instrumentalist with a degree in music from Earlham College in historic Richmond, IN (the birthplace of recorded jazz, and home of 30s era Genette Records).

As a sound technician Willy gained valuable experience working at the world famous Tarry Town Music Hall near Sleepy Hollow, NY, where he worked with top notch touring bands like Blues Traveler, the Indigo Girls, Paul Shaffer, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the late, great Levon Helm. He al
so worked with A-list actors such as Stanley Tucci, James Cahn, Kevin Bacon and Keanu Reeves.

While living in Austin, TX, Willy was a member of the American Federation of Musicians alongside greats like Los Lonely Boys, George Straight, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson.

As a published author, Willy has published two books about open D tuning for the mandolin: "Dead Man's Tuning Vol. 1" and Dead Man's Tuning: Christmas Edition."

As a father of four young children, Willy teaches in a family friendly environment. Willy offers group lessons, called the Stringed Instrument Workshop, for all ages. At the SIW events, he has taught elementary students as well as adults all the way up to 86 years old! Willy is a background checked teacher and would love to pass on his knowledge of music to you and your family!

I wasn't really taking mandolin, but fiddle in the Stringed Instrument Workshop, but I loved it. Willy is a great teacher. I especially enjoyed the SIW, with my kids. It was a lot of fun to learn musical techniques with lots of people of different skill levels. I'm not the best musician, but Willy makes you feel like you can participate even if you don't understand all of the theory.

The Stringed Instrument Workshop last year was really fun because almost everyone in the group won some different musical freebies from different music stores nearby. We had a cookout and a concert, and both of my children were able to perform in front of the class. Willy set up a stage, lights and a sound system for us all to feel like we were stars! It was such a fun time, and we even had hotdogs and marshmallows!

I loved the Stringed Instrument Workshop so much, I had him teach my kids private lessons too, and they love it.

I loved taking lessons with Willy. I am only 7, and I am just learning, but am starting to play the Charlie Brown theme song. I can also play a little bit of Shorten Bread. There's another song too. It's a song that I learned that I really liked, can't remember the words, but it's a good song. I love piano lessons.

Robert R.

Winston Salem, NC

About Robert

Both my mom and dad were musicians and taught private lessons at home, so I grew up wanting to be a part of the music making. Now I am a university music educator who performs frequently as a soloist and collaborative pianist. I hold piano performance degrees from Carnegie Mellon and Yale. In addition, I've studied chamber music at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau (France) and vocal accompanying at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. I perform as a church musician, choral accompanist, and recital pianist in traditional and more modern styles. I'm active as a collaborative artist in c
ompetitions, auditions, and recordings. In the past three years I've been studying ballroom dancing for fun and as an extension of my interest in experiencing music from the standpoint of total body movement. It's been a game-changer for sure!

*** Lesson Details ***
I favor an easygoing approach to lessons as a joint venture (and Adventure) between the student and me. I enjoy encouraging students and responding to their individual needs and levels of accomplishment. I have taught beginners of every age as well as more experienced pianists. For beginners I aim to establish a comfortable relationship with the instrument so that they can feel at ease in playing in high and low registers and everywhere in between. For more advanced players the goal is to connect good technique with their own innate musical skill. Students at all levels will work on their music-reading and sight-reading skills. If your dream is to learn to play piano, I can help you to get started. If you already play, I can help you to prepare for auditions and recitals and, in short, to reach the next level. Let's roll!

*** Studio Equipment ***
six foot grand in living room seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
For many years I taught young children from the Frances Clark "Music Tree" series. With more intermediate and advanced students I used the Alfred Series as well as volumes by James and Jane Bastien. I also enjoy teaching and coaching students in the art of accompanying, particularly in choral music and vocal art songs. This is a specialty of mine, as I have made my living as a collaborative pianist. In recent years I have studied more popular genres that include piano arrangements of Gershwin, Porter, Kern, Rodgers, and many other American composers. While I shy away from teaching these to young students (even of high school or college age), I do occasionally teach contemporary arrangements of hymn tunes (Mark Hayes, Larry Shackley, and others) to students who show promise in handling modern genres, which of course require no small amount of technique and discipline.

Jaime E.

Jamestown, NC

About Jaime

***Teaching Philosophy***
I believe music is essential in education, as it teaches self-discipline, improves mental function, and enriches the soul. As a voice teacher, I believe in teaching healthy technique and opening doors to many genres, and fostering creativity and self-expression through composition. I encourage students to participate in choral and dramatic groups to hone their craft, as well as to help push them past their self-imposed limitations. As a cello teacher, I encourage involvement in orchestras and chamber groups, as they teach teamwork and develop listening skills. Mu
sic is such an incredible form of personal expression, and I aspire to help my students find their true musical voices and share them with others.

***Experience***
I have taught private music lessons since 1999. I am currently a music teacher for grades 7 through 12 at Westchester Country Day School in High Point, NC. There I conduct three choirs, teach Advanced Placement Music Theory, and teach general music (which includes basic guitar and piano).

I feel that performance is an integral part of music education and will make sure that my students are given ample opportunity to perform, whether it be at an Open Mic Night, as part of a choir or orchestra, or in a musical production to nurture each of my student's performance abilities.

***Lessons***
First and foremost we need to have fun. Music is fun and so should the lessons be. When it comes to practice I expect students to spend time outside of the lessons practicing to ensure that they see results.

I work with a variety of methods and concepts to ensure that I am building a solid understanding of music in my students. I work on intonation, music theory, sight reading, and expression.

I am comfortable teaching:
Voice: Beginning to Professional (Ages 12 and up)
Cello: Beginning to Intermediate (Any age)
Piano: Beginning to Intermediate (Any age)

***Voice***
I have extensive background in classical technique, and teach proper, healthy belt technique as well. I am comfortable teaching music from all genres and styles. I focus on developing a beautiful and unique sound for each student while maintaining a healthy, flexible voice.

***Cello***
I teach beginning and intermediate level cellists who either rent or own their own instrument. I encourage my students to join an orchestra or string ensemble, as there is no substitute for the experience of being part of a musical team. Cello students will work out of a technique book that will help build a solid foundation. Once basic skills are learned we will start to search out more advanced music.

***Piano***
For piano lessons I am best with beginners. I specialize in working with students who are just learning about music and want to learn the basics of piano. I am comfortable working with all ages of beginning piano student. I can also work with singing students who are interested in also accompanying themselves. Piano students will begin using a technique book that will help build basic skills. Once these are solid, we will start to search out the specific music you are interested in playing. So if you love a song on the radio, keep notes and we'll learn it.

***Studio Equipment***
Private music studio in my home with a Yamaha electric grand piano. I have built a small recording booth and equipment and software for quality recording and editing.

Jamie is a fantastic instructor. In my first lesson alone I felt Jamie knew exactly what my strengths and weaknesses were and how I could improve. She was super easy to work with and very encouraging throughout. She stretched me to try new things that immediately I could hear an improvement. Would highly recommend Jamie for those who are looking to take their singing to the next level.

During my career as a professional singer, Jaime has always been the first person I call for help with my CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music) technique. Over the years, she has helped me tremendously to develop a healthy belt technique and to increase my belt range as well. It would be an understatement to say that she knows her stuff. Oh, and she's an incredible classical singer, too. Just saying.

In addition to the breadth of her vocal knowledge, Jaime is as passionate about and dedicated to her students as you could ever want from a teacher. She always makes learning music fun and accessible, and she will be a champion and friend to you. Jaime is one of the finest singers and teachers I know.
