Susan T.

Grand Prairie, TX

About Susan B.

I would first like to say that I was born into a musical family. My Dad (choir director) and five older brothers were not only the majority of the choir in our large Catholic church, but Dad had a "tame" Frank Sinatra singing style. My mother played harmonica and piano by ear so acquiring musical intellects spread quickly to all of us. Most of my siblings sang and played instruments as we had a piano, guitar, organ, harmonica, trumpet, clarinet and a recorder to use as we pleased, with or without a music teacher.

I started singing and playing the piano at age four. With consistent encour
agement from my oldest sister (a professional organist for 40+ years), I learned piano and music theory while I was learning to read English, started guitar at eight. A natural born singer, I learned the basics of voice while in choir from middle school through high school while accompanying myself on piano or guitar when singing privately or for others. I wrote my first song at 17 and worked my way through college playing original music in coffee shops while earning my bachelors degree. After college, I started touring across the US (this was long before American Idol and the Internet when if you wanted to make it, you had to "pay your dues" on the road first). Working in the studio was always the most fun and challenging, my first original song got air play in 1990 (this was before CDs).

I received international distribution of my original music starting 2004; however, around that time I learned that performing was not my preferred way of providing service to others - teaching then become my passion. So while working for a local public school district as substitute teacher for general music classes (orchestra, band, choir as well), I was asked to write and teach a beginning songwriting class. From the very first day I had kids' attention wherever I went; and some of those students eventually recorded their own songs in studios.

After 30+ years of professional musicianship spanning across two continents (US and Germany) with originally produced music available on iTunes and two CDs on the market, I have found a unique way of teaching music to others. I especially enjoy teaching families (children, parents, grandparents, cousins, etc.) that want to learn to play a variety of instruments and music together. Married couples are wonderful to teach as well, I can usually get any combination of two or more people playing music together.

Annual recitals are every fall. I do not force anyone to play in the recital, however most everyone enjoys the experience.

*** Specialties ***
Piano: Beginning/intermediate classical piano; pop, blues, jazz, hymns, praise music (piano/voice).

Guitar: Beginning classical guitar (fingerpicking only), or beginning general guitar (notes, chords, fingerpicking, strumming, using a pick).

Ukulele: Beginning note and strumming patterns.

Voice: I can take you to professional levels! As proof, one of my adult male students, singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist/trumpeter, came to me to enhance his "character" voice. After 30 lessons, and assistance when he went into his home studio to record a four-song demo, needed assistance in mic technique, lead and background vocal arrangements. I just got news mid-June that he signed a four-song demo recording deal with an eight (8) time Grammy award winning music producer located in LA on Sunset Strip.

Lastly,I want to enroll students who want to learn Joni Mitchell's style of piano and guitar playing. She has never had any formal music training, plays by ear, particularly on guitar she uses many open tuning inspired from sounds of nature (i.e., bird songs, ocean waves, etc.).

*** Lesson Details ***
First of all, I'll need to know you or your children's goals, dreams and natural talent(s). What types of music do you love best? Are you more the serious type or fun-loving (I can work with both types of personalities but do require a respectful demeanor).

Lessons are once per week. It is extremely important to develop the brain, nervous system, physical coordination all together with momentum and repetitive physical movements; particularly, the first six months of learning.

I do book students on "Schedule-As-You-Go" but only if someone already knows an instrument and wants to take Combination Lessons: Voice/Piano or Voice/Guitar.

Please do not expect overnight success, hand/motor skills need to be developed and that doesn't occur with one or two lessons, unless you've had prior experience on your instrument and just need to refresh your brain's neural pathways.

If you are the creative type and wish to compose your own music, then by all means let me know as I teach not only composition, but arranging, music production, and the legal aspects of copyrights and distribution.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano lessons will be given on my grand piano. You will need your own guitar or ukulele, I will be using my Yamaha acoustic-electric classical nylon string guitar OR my Epiphone steel string guitar. Please see the photo noting the studio's microphones/vocal monitors, plus I have a variety of hand percussion.

Here are three recommendations in addition to those listed with current TakeLessons students:

"I would highly recommend Ms. T. She has been coming into our home to teach myself and my three children ranging in age from 10 to 4. She tailors each one of our lessons to our ability level and she approaches each lesson with tenderness, care and respect. She has even created special lessons for my 4 year old to engage his creativity and ideas. We have used other instructors before, but have never had such personal attention. I couldn't imagine using anyone else."
Erin O. May 2012

"Ms. T has been teaching my 6 year old daughter classical piano for almost three years. Ms. T is very patient, knowledgeable and encouraging. My daughter wasn't excited about taking piano lessons initially but has really grown to love to play and looks forward to lessons with Ms. T. I recommend other moms give her a call."
Cathy C. March 2012
Year First Hired: 2011
Top Qualities: Personable, On Time, High Integrity

"I am a 58 year old man who has always wanted to learn to play the piano. It wasn't until I met Susan that this dream became possible. I wasn't sure I could learn a new skill like this but she had me reading and playing music within the first couple of lessons. I am impressed with her teaching skills but her performance skills as well. She made me feel relaxed and confident from the beginning. I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn a new instrument and whether you are 4 or 84 she can help make your dream of playing a reality." R. Roberts January 2013

Reasons to love Susan Taylor: She has all the markers of a great teacher; she instructs well, is very patient, kind and encouraging. When I say ‘encouraging,’ I really mean that. She can be one of your biggest cheerleaders, always pushing you towards your goals and praising your efforts and acknowledging when you have improved. Something else about Susan is that she is helpful at crafting her lessons around your goals. Just what do you want to achieve with your lessons? Think about it, share with her your thoughts and she’ll help you get there! I also appreciate her calm nature, her organized approach to things and that she keeps a nice, clean space for me to come and learn all this fun stuff I want to know! I am VERY, VERY, VERY happy to call her my teacher.

I am a very laid back instructor, though the classes are very well structured.

Usually, we progress with a chosen curriculum according to the students music vision and initial overview during the 1st few classes. However, all curriculums are supplemented to enhance student performance and comprehension. Our supplemental material is used to go swifter for material that you grasp well and understand, and slower with more repetition for that that you need more practice, without being monotonous. It is also used to provide appropriate but exciting reinforcement of all material to ensure that material is retained.

We are forever updating material and also incorporate games and enhanced activities to keep lessons interesting and refreshing as well!

I also have experience in music therapy, teaching autistic, ADD, ADHD and those with varying degrees of brain damage.

It has been difficult finding an instructor who can work with my granddaughter, age 4, who can captivate her attention and encourage her to release her inner talent for singing. She just started for the first time singing and has since been singing solo in church in front of the congregation three times and Ms. Barbara has her set up for a recital this month at a new location.
GOD BLESS YOU, MS. BARBARA!!!!!!!

Barbara is a very lovely, talented, and honest woman. She is professional and gifted working with young children such as my granddaughter only four years old. She made her feel so comfortable and on the first day, made her so relaxed that she cooperated with the lessons taught through play. It is obvious that she isn't in it for the money, but for the imparted gift of talent she possesses. to her clients. I'm looking forward to the next lesson for my granddaughter. I will do my part in reinforcing the lessons at home to get the best she gives for my granddaughter.

Who knew it could be so much fun to take music lessons online? I played flute as a child and now at age 62, I am so pleased to start playing again! With Heidi's encouraging, patient, optimistic and expert guidance, I am enjoying every lesson and making more progress than I thought would be possible. She customizes every lesson to help me improve. I deeply appreciate her broad and deep knowledge of theory, posture, tone quality, expressiveness...but I'm also really thrilled that she quickly helped me learn to play popular songs I love.

Josh L.

Arlington, TX

About Josh

Josh grew up listening to classic rock and country music, but wasn’t focused on becoming a musician in his early years. When Josh started High School in Long Beach, MS, he ended up joining band, where he landed in the tuba section. He learned to read music and play with a group, and his love for music grew even more.

Josh decided to learn guitar, and in his senior year of High School began teaching the instrument to beginners. Josh continued on to study music theory and ear training at Tarrant County College, where he honed his skills of reading and writing music. Josh performed with colleg
e singers as a tenor, and played bass guitar. Since then, Josh has been playing, writing and performing music in pursuit of becoming a full-time musician.

Josh is inspired by his wonderful wife, Becca, and his 2 daughters, Amelia “Bug” and Adrienne "Bit".
