Matt was perfect! Better than I anticipated it would be. Got straight to work, no time was wasted. Usually when I have a first lesson in anything new that I'm learning the teacher takes that whole lesson talking about logistical theoretical fluff, but with Matt it was like learning on the job; all hands on. I immediately learned new chords, tricks and finger styles that I had only heard of in passing. Granted that could probably be because I'm somewhat considered "intermediate" at guitar, but nonetheless I felt like I learned more in that one lesson with Matt then I learned with some teachers in three! Also an all around motivational coach to have!
Thanks again Matt, awesome lesson, looking forward to the next one!

Matt is great! Easy to get along with, and always had plenty of content to help with my goals. Very accommodating with my schedule.
I'm a musician and an artist. I've been playing piano and drums for almost 20 years. I went to tri-c for music and art and completed all the music classes that were offered. I took 4 semesters of music theory and drum lessons. I also took 2 semesters of piano, voice and guitar lessons. During that time I also gave lessons to beginner students. I believe that music and art come from the heart, but also need a basic foundation to build on. I will teach you the basics and so much more. I will help you realize your passion and love for music and art.
*** Travel Equipment *** Drum pad.
Students will have to have a drum set.
*** Specialties *** Rock and Pop music, Classical and Jazz music
I would not be the person I am today if music wasn't the focal point in my life as it is. Not only do I absolutely love performing and studying music myself, but I adore teaching as well. Part of the musical experience is taking what you hear and what you learn from others and building on it to create your own musical contributions. I take the gifts other teachers and musicians have given me very seriously and subsequently feel the great importance of imparting my knowledge unto others.
Whether you want to be a professional, or just be competent enough to enjoy yourself, we all practice, st
udy technique and gain knowledge about music with really only one goal in mind: To have all the tools necessary to express ourselves adeptly through music. All the technique in the world will not make you a great musician. Similarly, you can be extremely creative and knowledgeable, but if you don't have the technique and vocabulary needed to express your ideas, you will find yourself very limited and suppressed musically.
My philosophy about teaching follows that I am here to provide you with those tools in a fun, exciting way. When I say "tools" I mean the whole toolbox. This includes giving you the technique, correcting bad habits, providing listening material, finding holes in your playing and much more. A good music teacher must be more than an instructor, but a mentor and an inspirational guide. My best teachers were the ones who could cultivate my playing not just through the physical aspects but ESPECIALLY through the cerebral. We ALL need encouragement and inspiration to get the best out of our natural talent. I love to encourage my students to do their best. To strive to not only complete exercises, but to execute them well. Every student is different, and therefore I will tailor their education with me on an individual basis. I expect a lot out of my students because I strongly believe in my teaching ability as well as their ability to learn and feel good about their progress.
My approach to providing all these things is modeled around my best experiences in learning and performing. I've studied under some of the absolute best players and teachers in the world. Here are just a couple:
World renowned drummer and educator
TOMMY IGOE from The Lion King on Broadway The Birdland Big Band Numerous instructional books and DVDs.
Highly sought after percussionist
TOM KOLOR Graduated from William Paterson as well as with a Masters from the Julliard School of Music Professor of Music at the University at Buffalo.
IAN FROMAN Professor of Drums at Berklee School of Music Professional, world renowned Drummer
I've also graduated Cum Laude from the University at Buffalo with a degree in Music Performance, Dean's List and Honor Roll awards.
Some of my experience includes being featured in Tommy Igoe's "Great Hands For a Lifetime" DVD which received 5 stars from Modern Drummer magazine in 2010. I've also played great venues like Gramercy Theatre and Central Park in NYC among others. I've played in Big Bands, Symphony Orchestras, Klesmer and Percussion ensembles, and more.
I really could go on forever talking about music, what it means to me, how I approach teaching, etc. When you love music and teaching as much as I do, you really can't help it. It's ingrained in you. Precisely as ingrained as I like to think being a fun, caring, disciplined, attentive teacher is in me. Whether it be for you or your child, I can easily promise that I will deliver the same success-bound mentoring that I have to my students for over 10 years running.
Can't wait to hear from you!
*** Lesson Details *** -I am here for you.
I would not teach if I wasn't very interested in the progress of my students. I want you to be the biggest, baddest, awe-inspiring drummer/percussionist possible. I want to ultimately end up at your shows and concerts and be able to say "That's MY student." You can always be guaranteed that when studying with me everything I assign has precisely that goal in mind.
-Strict or Laid Back?
Many people might ask if I'm strict, or laid back. My response is that I am excited and driven to help you reach success. I will never scold you because that sort of practice has no place in teaching. I also understand that learning isn't just a straight upwards incline of progression. We're all humans. Sometimes we progress astronomically in a short period of time and sometimes we have to fight hard to nail something. Sometimes we have a lot of time to practice, and sometimes we simply don't. My job is to make the most out of every situation and help you learn no matter what. That being said, I will still hound you to practice as much as healthily possible!
-What do you want out of music?
Probably the most important question I will undoubtedly ask you upon meeting you is why you are taking lessons. There is no way to formulate a tailored lesson plan if I don't know what it is you're working towards.
Like I said, I can't tell you very specifically what your lesson plan will be, but I CAN give you examples of what I almost always assign. Individually written out exercises, exercises from books, assigned reading/listening, song covers, chart writing/reading, improvisational exercises, rudiment study, warm-up routines, among others.
-Don't be Afraid to Make Mistakes
Mistakes are part of the learning process! If you aren't making mistakes then I'm doing something wrong. Never be afraid to make mistakes.
-You Get What You Give
I promise I'll be there for you. I'll be there to give you the material and show you the path, but you're going to have to be there for yourself as well. The more prepared you are for our lessons, the more you will grow from the time we spend together.
Mastering an instrument takes time and effort both by student and teacher. The sooner we get started the sooner you get on that path. I'm ready whenever you are.
*** Studio Equipment *** detached studio 3 professional drum sets seating for parents
*** Travel Equipment *** Numerous practice pads and snare stands. I expect my students to only provide their own Drum Sticks and books.
*** Specialties *** I pride myself on being as versatile as I possibly can be. I can aptly teach most styles including Jazz, Rock, Funk, Latin, Hip Hop\R&B, Classical, and more.

Very informative, we went over terminology, how important it is to have the proper sticks and the correct way to hold them. Reading the music and playing the proper beat. We did a lot for 1 lesson, my daughter loved it.

Flexible teaching methods!
Asaf is just brilliant. During the first session, my son was very distracted by the other things in the music room ie lights, instruments etc but Asaf managed to engage him by being extremely flexible in his teaching ie he is not wedded to any order and has a lesson plan in mind but goes with the flow and the interest of the child - this ensures that all that was intended on being covered is, and as a result of the flexibility, my son just loves these drum lesson and Asaf. Asaf makes him focus and has built a great teacher/student relationship in only 3 session. I would highly recommend Asaf.
I have been playing drum kit and percussion for over ten years and teaching for about seven. I've played a little bit of everything - pop, rock, punk, hip-hop, ska/reggae, blues, jazz, and even musical theater. In addition to drum kit, I can play and teach hand drums (djembe and conga) in contemporary or traditional African, Latin, American styles. I'm happy to share my skills and expertise with drummers of all ages and skill levels.
I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.
I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.
*** Lesson Details *** I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrume
nt takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!
*** Studio Equipment *** I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.
*** Specialties *** Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm. Drums & Percussion: All genres Piano: Classical (includes sight reading)

Very patient with an older student with unclear goals.
Nick (b. 1987 in New York City) composes, produces, performs and records music for live presentation, film, video, and dance. He began performing at age 9 around his hometown of Asheville, NC, and won a number of prestigious awards and scholarships.
In 2004, still in high school, Nick composed original jazz pieces for his jazz trio. The prestigious Jazz Composers Forum debuted the combo, which then played a variety of high-profile events through 2006.
In January 2006 Nick performed at The International Jazz Festival Lapataia in Punta del Este, Uruguay with jazz saxophonist Alex Han.
Nick's acoustic/electronic "The Orphan Girl -- Nenneh" was presented at the gala re-opening of newly restored Aycock Auditiorium at UNC-Greensboro. The UNCG Symphony Orchestra, with guest conductor Eduardo Vargas, premiered his composition "Interstate 40" in 2010. Later that year Nick received his degree in Music Composition.
In 2012, he released an album of original songs and compositions, entitled "Foolish Fantasy."
He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY, where he works full-time performing, composing, and teaching music.
*** Lesson Details *** I do not believe in a one-size fits all philosophy when it comes to piano lessons. I tailor-fit all my lessons to the particular student's goals.
Students find my demeanor laid-back, personal, upfront, and patient.
I like to incorporate tidbits of relevant music history to contextualize the music we work on. To me, it keeps things more interesting!
Sometimes lesson books may not be necessary. When appropriate, I prefer teaching from the Bastien book series.
*** Studio Equipment *** Roland RD-300NX full size weighted keyboard w/ ivory feel.
*** Travel Equipment *** The student must have access to his or her own keyboard (electric or acoustic acceptable)
*** Specialties *** I prefer to teach the Bastien method to my younger students! I am proficient in blues, jazz, RnB, rock, pop, gospel, and classical.

Nick teaches my 6 year old son, Teddy piano and he is really truly wonderful. He's so patient with my son and gets him back in focus when Teddy tries to talk about mine craft or some other subject not related to piano. Teddy loves him and has learned a lot from him. I highly recommend Nick!

Henri is great!! He is a super experienced and knowledgable drummer (musician) and teacher. He is extremely patient, has taught me my basi
cs, technique, and is very open to teaching what you want to learn, willing to teach you what you are really interested in musically. At the end of every lesson, he reviews what we learned, writes it and lets me video it so I can practice at home. He has been really flexible, patient, laid back and always down to work on whatever you want but great at coming up with lessons that challenge and excite you as well. I could'nt be more pleased with Henri as a teacher. I always look forward to my lessons."

"While I only had a couple of lessons with Evan, he did an amazing job teaching me the basics of percussion. As a music teacher, I had taken a percussion t
echniques course in college which really did not teach me much about teaching others in percussion. Evan's fun and pedagogical structure in his lessons allowed me to fill those gaps in understanding and allowed me to be a better teacher as well as a better percussionist and drum set player. Highly recommend for students of any age."
