Ricardo P.

Broomfield, CO

I am a classically trained pianist (I studied piano performance at SUNY at Buffalo) and I've made a living all my life playing Blues, Rock, Jazz, Salsa and many other styles. With this background I am able to teach with many different approaches depending what the student is interested in pursuing and what approach fits the student best.

About Ricardo

I have been a professional musician and teacher all my adult life. Music is my passion and has always been how I make a living. I teach piano/keyboards, guitar, voice, bass and ukulele. I studied classical piano at SUNY at Buffalo and I initially learned to play guitar and singing on my own. Years later I studied voice and guitar with great professional instructors. I am familiar with different ways of learning music: from very structured and traditional methods (that we use in classical music) to more improvisational and "by ear" approaches as we often do in popular music. This helps me tailo
r my music teaching specifically to each student based on his/her musical preferences, abilities and learning style. I can teach all styles of music including: Pop, Rock, Blues, Country, Bluegrass, Jazz, many different Latin styles including Salsa, Bolero and Bossa Nova.
I have performed all over the US and toured many countries including Mexico, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, England and France. I have recorded more than 100 CDs for many artists (as well as my own original music) as a pianist/keyboardist, singer, guitarist and music producer. I have won many awards including most recently the Best Blues Band award as the pianist, guitarist and singer for the Lionel Young Band at the International Blues Challenge (the largest competition of blues bands in the world).
I have taught music through my whole career. Many of my students have gone on to study music as a career and have become successful professional musicians.
I am very comfortable teaching all levels from professional musicians to very beginners at any age.
I currently lead and perform with my group. We perform concerts, private events and some club work. My life as a professional musician has given me a lot of knowledge to share with my students.

*** Lesson Details ***
I adjust my approach based on what you want to learn, always with an emphasis on learning as much as possible while making the lessons fun and enjoyable. If you are a beginning piano/keyboard or guitar student I can teach you the basics of how to read music and how to play chords in the first few months and then we can decide whether you are interested in playing written music or more improvisational styles. I use different method books depending on the student and sometimes I use just my teaching materials if you are only interested in improvisational styles like Rock or Blues guitar or piano (for example). If you are a voice student, I teach with a combination of learning songs you like and using a CD/MP3s of vocal exercises that help develop good vocal technique. Whatever your instrument and musical preference you can be sure we'll have fun and you'll be making music from the very start!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a Yamaha upright piano and keyboards. I have acoustic and electric guitars, bass and amps. I have Shure Sm-58 mics to teach microphone technique with.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student must have his/her own instrument and metronome (or equivalent) must purchase course book(s) if needed..

*** Specialties ***
I teach different styles depending on the students goals. I can teach a traditional classical style for those interested in classical music and I can teach more practical approaches for popular music such as learning by chords (for instrumental students- not voice obviously) and learning improvisation through scales, arpeggios and music theory.

Both of my sons have been taking lessons with Ricardo for about a month. Ricardo first asked them what they wanted to play and has built their lessons around their interests. This has resulted in more spontaneous practice and enthusiasm. My youngest son asked if he could play a Beatles tune for us that he was working on. Ricardo had adapted it so that he could be successful immediately. He was so excited and he sounded great!

Daniel A.

Golden, CO

Piano is my main instrument. As a music teacher and composer I realized early on the importance of piano skills. The "mother" of all instruments will help you gain musical knowledge and ability that stems into every aspect of music including music theory, composing, playing other instruments, etc.

About Daniel

Now accepting students in Golden, Co. and surrounding areas!!!

In addition to teaching music, I have also worked as a special education assistant and wrestling/track coach at Lake Zurich Middle School South and an assistant Kung Fu/Tai Chi instructor at Green Mountain Arts in Logan Square, Chicago, Illinois. Jazz piano, Voice, and Composition are my main areas of expertise. However, I have also been recording, and playing guitar almost my entire life. I fully believe in music education not only for entertainment and personal enjoyment, but for many other means. Beyond its capacity for being
used as entertainment, music aids in learning, helps develop advanced motor skills, increases memory function, and many other purposes for a well rounded education. It is my goal to help educate the next generation in traditional music practices as well as incorporate new techniques that are relevant to our current day and age.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson plans vary from person to person. I always make it a point to get to know the student's existing musical knowledge, goals, and background before I create a personalized lesson plan. All important concepts are covered as they are needed so students can understand theoretical concepts based upon actual application and usage. In short, I teach in a way that students can "dig in" right away and play, create, improvise, sing and/or compose freely and naturally. I always encourage students or parents to contact me with their goals, previous musical training, etc., and discuss what they really want out of lessons so they can get the most out of taking me on as an instructor.

Daniel is awesome!! He really knows how to customize the lesson to your skill level and makes it so that it's easy to learn. I'm already memorizing and learning things that I didn't think I would be able to. I'm really enjoying my lessons and so glad that I signed up. Looking forward to many more lessons from Daniel!

Julian Y.

Boulder, CO

The piano is the best instrument with which to teach music theory. Easily being able to visually identify the different notes of the chromatic scale comes easiest on the piano. We will learn to play chord progressions, scales, improvise melodies and accompany different styles of music very quickly. We can also learn to read music from the classical repertoire.

About Julian

I graduated with a Music BA from CU Boulder in May 2014. I have played in several different ensembles on a variety of instuments including Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Voice. My classical training in combination with my experience as a song writer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader gives me a uniquely well-rounded teaching style. I aim to teach and inspire students to use music as a platform for learning important skills such as diligent practice, cognitive flexibilty, and creative expression.

I grew up in Boulder and Hawaii where I gained a love for island music, Reggae, Hig
hlife Music, Jazz and Funk. I am currently in a band called "Isa and Joe Alan" which plays original music in all these styles. I am also a professional face painter, juggler and balloon twister, and love yoga, hiking and climbing.

Julian

The lesson curriculum aims to develop students' understanding of aural skills, sight reading, and music theory as well as encouraging fun ways of using music to be more expressive, creative, coordinated and focused. I always tailor lessons to the goals of the student and parents, but after three months, a beginning student generally understands music theory and how to read music, has some experience improvising on their instrument, and feels confident in their ability to develop their skills in and outside of lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I teach in my home studio in North Boulder. The studio has, piano, bass drums, guitar ukelele and vocal microphones. Students should bring their own instruments to in studio lessons (drums and piano provided in the studio) Parents may attend the lessons if they choose.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide all necessary materials for lessons, however it is necessary that students have their own instruments on which to play and practice. I may request that students buy some materials such as tuners (for stringed instruments) or lesson books.

*** Specialties ***
Reggae, Afro-music, funk, soul, blues and jazz

Julian has been wonderful to teach Music Theory as well as Piano. He has interesting methods and uses very solid music theory, to create a larger picture which leads to a full understanding of how piano works, and of the music you play on it.

Lessons are interesting and fun. Also I find them very well-rounded. Julian is a positive instructor and I find him very respectful and simply fun to learn from.

I highly recommend Julian Y.

It's difficult to find an instructor and I feel extremely lucky that I ended up studying with Julian. I was a beginning piano player but very interested in a strong music theory base for my studies. Julian has an extremely deep knowledge of music theory and application across many styles. We have probably spent as much time on theory as on playing (my choice/naturally where our lessons have gone). He is also an excellent guitar player and i have paired relearning guitar with the piano so our lessons can range widely from piano practice to theory to guitar and back.

I find Julian extremely easy to get a long with, very good at explaining theory and leading me to my own epiphanies and conclusions that have made learning continually exciting. He is a good communicator about lessons times and has been probably more flexible than i deserve in accommodating my schedule.

As we have progressed we are now working on song writing, music notation, jazz/staff notation, working through the REAL BOOK, ear training, etc..

My greatest fear was ending up with a very parochial or didactic instructor. Julian is anything but that. I look forward to my lessons every week and have increased my time with him to twice a week.

My son has been taking drum lessons from Julian for about six months now. Julian is fantastic with him. He seems very knowledgeable and his demeanor is perfect for kids (and adults!). He likes to incorporate other instruments into the lesson as well, since my son can also play piano. He has a nice energy during lessons, keeping a good balance of having fun and learning. He also just led my son in his first group experience, where he played drums while others played guitar and keyboard. Julian was amazing at keeping everyone on task, while having fun at the same time! I would recommend Julian as a music instructor for anyone and everyone. :)

Shannon K.

Boulder, CO

Specialize in beginning lessons with children focusing on proper posture, hand position, note reading and music making. I have been teaching piano 5 years and been studying for 10 years.

About Shannon

I hold a Bachelors of Education in Music from Florida Atlantic University. I have been teaching music for the last 4 years to students of all ages (5-65 and up). I have experience teaching in public schools in a classroom environment! Finally I am a trained music together teacher teaching in Boulder, CO.

Music has a way of reaching us all and helping us become more sensitive, compassionate, creative people. The study of music has been linked to better test scores, more creative minds, and increased critical thinking abilities. For adults returning to music or picking it up for the firs
t time can be a rewarding hobby, a hidden passion or desire, or a change of schedule.

Music can be for anyone!

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed for each individual student. No two students learn the exact same way, so no two lessons will be exactly the same. I expect students to practice and be prepared for every lesson and be ready each and every time to learn something new. "Perfect practice makes perfect."

All piano students should be prepared begin to learning in the classical style. This course of study covers all the basics necessary to study all genres of music and will insure students learn the rudiments and technique needed for more difficult music. Piano students will be exposed to different styles of music as they progress and will also study and practice music theory, ear training, sight reading and learn about the history of music.

Voice students will be exposed to classical voice technique as well as music of their own style choice. Like piano, selections made are meant to teach the techniques involved in singing in a healthy and supported manner. Voice students will also be exposed to ear training, sight-singing, music theory and music history and will not just be singers but well rounded musicians.

**I only accept voice students 10 years of age and older and prefer ages 14 and older. As the voice is part of body it is subject to the changes involved with growing up and is still "growing" with the student. Younger students will be on a case by case basis.

*** Studio Equipment ***
It is recommended for voice students to have a recording device readily available as well as a keyboard or piano. Students/parents will be responsible for the purchasing of any music books through the teacher when required.

A piano or keyboard will be required for all piano students for practice purposes. Students/parents will be responsible for the purchasing of any music books through the teacher when required.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students will need access to a piano or keyboard (88 keys preferably weighted) for all piano and voice lessons. It is also recommended for voice students to have a recording device readily available. Students/parents will be responsible for the purchasing of any music books required.

*** Specialties ***

Shannon is just the best piano teacher ever! She is always professional, always prompt, and always fun and encouraging for my sons (age 8). It might seem like teaching twins would be easy; just give the same lesson twice! But Shannon immediately noticed the differences in their learning styles and has tailored each lesson to meet each one of them at their own learning level. We have concerts and homework. We have great lessons where they sailed though and got gold stars and lessons where we learned that more practice is needed. Shannon makes it fun for them, they are always excited to see her. But she insists on attention and pushes them to learn. I would recommend Shannon to anyone wanting to learn to play the piano!!

Mary F.

Denver, CO

I will work in the genre of your choice, incorporating music theory
and vocal training, if desired.

About Mary

I've been playing piano since I was 6 yrs. old, and guitar and organ since I was 13. I've been able to use music in so many ways, and that is the opportunity I want for my students. From singing in school and church choirs, to accompanying and directing them, I've had a lot of enjoyable experiences. I've had the fun of performing solo and with bands, and have been teaching music for about 25 yrs, both privately and in the schools. My BA is in music education and my Masters is in individual performance. I've taught K-Jr College music classes in general music, chorus, piano, guitar, and theory.
I think my favorite form of teaching is still one-on-one lessons. Working with one student allows me to adjust my teaching to their particular learning style and needs.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm strict enough to make sure that my students make progress and get a strong musical foundation. I'm laid back enough to make sure that they have a good time doing so and can feel that they are setting their own goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***

Basic Piano and Organ at Church

*** Travel Equipment ***
Supplemental music books are loaned from time to time.

Extremely patient

I've loved banjo music for years but never had the courage to learn how to play until recently. I'm a senior citizen with absolutely no musical background. What I like best about Mary is that she's totally patient and encouraging but at the same time pushes me out of my comfort zone so that I learn something new with each lesson. When I struggle with how to do something, she suggests different ways to attack the problem or ways to work around it. In just a few months she's helped me be able to play a song for someone that they can actually recognize, which was the first goal I had set for myself. I look forward to many more goals. I'm so glad to have Mary as my teacher!

Mary is an excellent teacher. Having been a teacher for 20 years, I tend to closely observe other teachers. Mary had much more to teach me than I was willing to learn. Playing the guitar is a psycho motor skill and as such it must be practiced diligently to gain the muscle memory necessary to perform the tasks. I didn't do it but Mary kept encouraging me and the more she did, the more I practiced, although I still fall woefully short of 30 minutes every day. Her lessons in music theory, however, are paying dividends since I also play some other instruments.
She is kind, patient, skilled and knows music inside out. I don't think I could have chosen a better teacher. I will start again as soon as I am able. Thanks Mary, job well done!
