Pulling off a great show requires knowledge, hard work and little bit of luck. With a performance focus we will cover how to build a good set list and interact with an audience.

About Michael
Expressing yourself is the ultimate goal of music and my job is to help you get your point across!

Like any musician, music is my life.
I love to soak it in any way I can! Whether it be listening to records, jamming with my friends or watching all the live concert footage of Stevie Ray Vaughan I can get my hands on.

I graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a Bachelor’s of Art in Music with a concentration on guitar performance. Throughout my undergraduate studies I performed in various ensembles within the college’s curriculum. Currently, my solo project gives me the opportunity to continue to grow through writing and performing my own original pieces. Throughout my career I have had the honor of performing with renowned songwriters Todd Rundgren and Charlie Sexton as well as being mentored by jazz drummer Frank Donaldson of
The Ramsey Lewis Quartet.

*** Lesson Details ***

Studying at the college level taught me a lot about what not to do as a teacher. The material is already difficult enough, so why would I be difficult with you?

I strive to be more of a mentor and friend rather than taskmaster. However, I do require structure and commitment to getting better. My curriculum will revolve around you and your needs with added material that I feel will help you succeed.

A typical lesson plan includes:

 physical technique

 chord and scale knowledge,

 soloing concepts

 and tying all of these ideas together by learning a song in a genre you love!

All of these concepts culminate in the discovery of your own personal voice!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My teaching studio is just steps away from the Belmont Blue Line stop! Our lessons will be held in a private practice space in my home. The large room has multiple amps and guitars, so there is no need to bring an instrument for lessons if you don't want to! (But, you do need an instrument to practice with outside of our lessons!)

Performance lessons focus on confidence, cues, and various styles in the music culture. The importance of audience connection and performance objective are taught as well.

About Loretta
I have always been fascinated with how music is created and who works behind the scenes of performances and recordings. I started playing the flute in elementary school, piano in junior high school, and singing in high school. Once I got to UMASS, Dartmouth I chose the Music option for my major. I then moved on to NYU. I have been teaching for over ten years now. Working with students both in person and online has been amazing. With online lessons I am able to work with students who love the convenience of being at home and in person I can show students what it is like to really grow! I love my students of all ages, and can only hope to show others how amazing music can be. I have worked with a handful of students with special needs and am comfortable teaching in a non-traditional style. I am currently preparing to begin my certification
in music therapy. Those who can do teach, and those who can teach totally do!

*** Lesson Details ***
You will set the pace for your lesson. I want you to enjoy your time in music, so your lessons will be completely customized. We will develop a goal plan for you so that our time together is interesting, fun, and we make progress! In 3-6 months, you will have a stable technical program and have started a portfolio of music for performances, no matter what level you are. We can share sheet music in person or online (I can even email you great links to amazing performances). Just let me know where you want to be in music, and we'll work together to make it happen. I can't wait to meet you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home studio is in a private music room. Parents can relax in our family space with coffee or tea and enjoy their children's learning at their leisure. My studio includes a 88-key keyboard, technology setup with an iMac, microphone and stand, a mirror for posture and musical instruments. I carry books for the lessons themselves (not for practice at home), and we can download or print out music as desired. If you take lessons online, I can email you links and sheet music as needed. Feel free to bring any additional equipment music you would like to share. I have some great recommendations for music books designed for both children and adult learners.

*** Specialties ***
jazz, contemporary, classical (instrumental), original, computer music composition

Performing is a whole different type of focus in a lesson. It takes a lot of practice on very specific things such as musicality and physical movements. I use whatever works for each student but tend to use an add on method where once we master one thing we add another layer.

About Marissa
My musical journey started in high school when my algebra teacher saw me in the hallway, grabbed my hand and brought me to the choir room to sign up for The Sound of Music auditions. To this day I cannot believe my math teacher unknowingly sent me straight down a path that I would walk the rest of my life. After The Sound Of Music I never left music. I kept singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When it came to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion and I wanted to make a life of this. When you wake up everyday and the first thing you do is sing at that point there was no other way to live. There I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I found that I am a vocal scientist
at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. Being a vocal scientist, I find it so interesting to know what exactly needs to happen when we sing in order sing in a healthy and beauitful manner.

While I was at Moraine Valley after I firmly choose music I felt I needed more of a diverse program so I can answer any possible music based question. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education. Their program intensely teaches all the band and orchestral instruments on top general education classes and your major, mine being voice. While I was there I also took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for 11 years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach in every lesson is ear training and or rhythm. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the studio room, electric piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide literature and a music stand while the students should have a full length keyboard and or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I teach rhythm, sight singing and ear training, general musical terms, as well as specific vocal techniques.

Performing is my passion and expertise. Saxophone, jazz, classical, and everything in between!

About Sean
I have been magnetized to the saxophone ever since I was introduced to the music of John Coltrane in the seventh grade. Since then I have been in a constant pursuit of deepening my understanding of music and all its beautiful forms, and sharing that knowledge with those who are interested!
Hailing from Flagstaff, Arizona, I attended Western Michigan University on a four year scholarship and received my Bachelor of Music, Jazz Studies in 2009. While I was there I had the incredible privilege of studying with the great Trent Kynaston, as well as performing with some of the most influential jazz musicians today, including Bobby McFerrin, Stefon Harris, Billy Hart, Fred Hersch, and Randy Brecker. I now live in Chicago where I teach lessons and perform regularly with my band, The Winchester Sound.
I am very passionate about music, and consis
tently see that passion transferred to my students. It is incredibly rewarding to see someone progress right before my eyes, and know that I influenced the progression.
I teach classical saxophone, jazz saxophone, music theory, jazz/pop theory, music performance, arranging and composition.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe everyone gets into music for a different reason, and therefore each student deserves their own custom curriculum. It is important for students to work at a pace and in a direction that is comfortable for them. For this reason, we will start with a consultation so I can figure out exactly what you aim to get out of taking lessons. From there we will incorporate some standard curriculum and method books that I enjoy using, as well as my own techniques that involve plenty of ear training and exercises to improve one's facility on the instrument (scales, patterns, technique).
Most importantly, we're going to have a lot of fun! If you are not having fun it's not even worth your time. I am very laid back and promote a stress-free environment!
Remember, I was once a beginner, too. I know what it's like to learn something new, so I want to be there to guide you through it!

*** Studio Equipment ***
extra music room f/w keyboard w/ seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide no equipment. Student must provide saxophone, reeds, books, etc.

*** Specialties ***
My passion is jazz. Not just jazz saxophone, but the art form in general. I love to teach people the theory behind improvisation and watch them as they explore and internalize the endless possibilities thereafter.
I am also classically trained and am equally proficient in that area, although I would say I do prefer jazz.
In summary I guess my specialties would be: jazz saxophone, jazz theory, improvisation, jazz arranging, saxophone performance, composing.

To perform confidently is to know how to be authentically yourself while being present with an audience. It's a feeling like no other, and the most profound form of communication I know. It's an experience that has added meaning to my life and I want to help my students get to that place through their singing.

I've been teaching voice for 10 years, and hold a Doctorate of Musical Arts. I have taught students from school-aged to undergraduate music majors to adult singers. My students have sung in professional and semi-professional musical productions, in vocal ensembles and even as operatic soloists. My approach is founded upon a body-oriented vocal technique that emphasizes physical ease and self-knowledge. I try to combine this technical training with an understanding of the texts, stories and history of any given piece. I hope that through singing lessons with me, students will learn to control their voices efficiently, to become more knowledgeable about the music they perform ...

About Jessica
Doctor Aszodi is a teacher with over a decade's experience and also has a serious career as a solo vocalist. Her performances have garnered praise for their “…virtuosic whimsy” (New York Times), “expressive flexibility, combined with imagination…” (The Sydney Morning Herald) and “…utmost security and power...” (Chicago Tribune).

She teaches students of all ages and musical backgrounds and has a Masters degree in music from the University of California and a Doctorate of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium. Jessica teaches in a range of styles; from opera and theatre, to jazz and singer-song writing. She is passionate about voice and helps her students to master their voices through a foundation in a body-oriented vocal technique. She encourages students to become knowledgeable about the music they perform and to develop the skills
to be clear and expressive vocal communicators.

When not teaching, Jessica is a professional vocal soloist who performs with ensembles around the world, especially in her native Australia where she has been a soloist with many of their orchestras and opera companies. She is also a recording artist on labels including Chandos, Ars Publica and Hospital Hill. As a performer, she specializes in adventurous repertoire; singing opera, chamber music, experimental, conventional and contemporary-classical music. Her love of experimentation influences her teaching. She takes an exploratory approach to finding the best ways to help each individual student improve.

*** Lesson Details ***
A first lesson will always begin with getting to know each other. It is important to me that we figure out why a student has come to have lessons and to decide on the best path forward to help them reach their goals. Lessons will include a mix of technical work (to improve vocal tone quality, range, flexibility and ease) and working on repertoire. Students can bring in songs they want to learn and we work on them together. Alternately, I might suggest appropriate pieces to complement other things we are working on (for example, if we are working on improving some aspect of a students listening skills, I might suggest a piece that helps to cement that learning, or if we are trying to improve a student's ease in a particular part of their range, we might work on a piece that uses that part of their range).

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is a room in my home with a piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***

I couldn't be happier in working with Jessica as my vocal teacher!

She is a wonderful coach and I have enjoyed my time so far working with her. I've been to 3 other vocal teachers in Chicago over the years, and she is by far the best. She is the first teacher I have been to in years who has helped me grow as a performer and help me see noticeable results.

First and foremost, Jessica is able to teach the correct techniques of signing and she brings this to the forefront. She is clearly very knowledgeable about the physical aspects of great singing and clearly explains and shows how everything within the body works together to create sound. She is very creative in recommending exercises and things to practice in order to improve overall technique and capabilities.

Don't let the technical approach fool you, though; Jessica is extremely expressive and has a real passion for singing and helping others sing to the best ability. She has a wide repertoire and can teach music of all different genres and styles, making it fun along the way (whether classical, jazz, modern, show tunes, opera, etc.). She provides in-the-moment feedback too help push to make pieces performance ready.

Finally, she is a great overall performance coach, providing recommendations on ways to calm nerves, act with a piece, etc. and has some great tips and perspective on helping prepare for an audition.

I would highly recommend Jessica as a teacher.
