As a lover of music, I have strived to learn the most that I can. As an experienced teacher, I strive to provide the best tutoring possible. The learning environment is friendly, encouraging, supportive and paced to the student's abilities.

About Russell
As a music lover, I have been a curious student. Starting at the age of five, learning general music and singing, learning piano from a private teacher at the age of nine, concert band (French horn) all throughout junior and senior high school, and guitar.
I began teaching at the age of seventeen, in 1985 at a music school in Des Moines, Iowa. I have continued on teaching at other music studios and now teach at my own home studio.

Very kind and understanding when it came to the lessions. I have issues with my hands and he showed me ways to hold my guitar and still be able to play. I loved working with Russell and hope to have more lessions from him.

I took lessons with Russell for several years. He's a great instructor who always gave great lessons and got me involved with several opportunities outside the classroom to grow my abilities!

Knowledgeable, credible, experienced, caring and has a desire to share his expertise in piano and guitar with others. I would highly recommend Russell Nollen as a private music instructor.

Guitar requires foundation to be able to play the fun stuff. In teaching guitar, I assign classical pieces along with pieces that bring joy to the player. I specialize in improvisation and love to see players playing things not written on the staff while still able to play their Carcassi studies.

About John
I am currently pursuing a Jazz Performance degree at Florida State University. However trombone is not how I fell in love with music. I started taking classical guitar lessons at age seven and successfully continued through high school, becoming part of the all state guitar ensembles. I started on trombone at age 11. Through jazz, funk, blues and improvisation I fell in love with the sound and techniques I could implement on a brass horn. I continued playing both instruments in a funk band and still gig regularly on both.

My drive to teach comes from students' learning. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a breakthrough in a tough passage, or an "ah-ha" moment when discussing theory. Music is so much more than strings on a fretboard, notes on a page, or harmonies that reach your ear. Music is therapy, it is education, it is freedom, and above all, it is beautiful. With this mindset, we look at the larger picture to assess where we fit in the sonic spectrum. We talk about parts and arrangements, instrumentation and interpretation. And everything in between!

About Darrell
I'm Darrell! I've been playing music professionally for 15 years and teaching for 10. I absolutely love the blues and anything with SOUL. I studied science and music at Saginaw Valley State University, and work as a Med Tech locally. I have a passion for music that I feel I have to share.

In 6th grade I picked up trombone, and loved it. By the time I was in 9th grade I had taught myself the basics of all the other band brass instruments, and decided to tackle bass. After a few months I decided I needed more strings to play with and purchased an electric guitar. My life changed that day. Every
day after that for the next 4 years I practiced the guitar. By the time I graduated high school I was playing lead guitar in a cover band, and getting some attention in the local music scene.

That was about 10 years ago, and since then I have established a beautiful little family, with my wife, Ashley, who gave birth to our daughter, Charlotte on New Years Eve 2017. Not to mention, played many, many shows.

I started teaching guitar at about 16, and have always maintained a studio of at least a couple students. I also offered assistance in the local band classes in order to improve my chops on my alternate instruments. I've played with several local bands, played musicals for local and regional theater groups, and was the house band leader for the Williamsburg Dinner Theater for 4 years. By my best estimation, I have played well over 1000 shows (probably closer to 1200), and that number continues to grow as I develop my band, the Darrell Boger Band.
