*** Lesson Details ***
I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

Beginning band lessons taught using the school's chosen method book

About Todd
Music is my life, and is something that I want to share with others! Because of that, I try my best to give positive experiences to all of my students. I have a byline that says "Music is Much More than Just Learning Notes." I believe that! Anyone can learn notes, fingerings, etc. What I try to do is add that "soul" element that each person has and cultivate that into meaningful music!

So, with all that said, here's what I try to instill:

A lesson is a place to share! I listen to students as well as teach. We all have something we can learn from each other!

While I want lessons to be fun and informative, I strive for complete understanding, which means any student will gain the needed mechanics with complete knowledge of why things happen and what they do to and for music. From there, I attempt to teach the "soul" of mu
sic and how emotion and spirit play a huge part in memorable music.

I don't believe in brow-beating, but I also don't want to pass over things. I don't believe practice makes perfect, but I do believe practice increases awareness!

I really try hard to help students move beyond the notes on the page. We may listen to music and describe how it makes us feel, or paint pictures both physical and mental of what the music is showing us. That is where I see the soul stepping in.

My Education

As stated before, I started on a little Magnus Organ. My grandmother told me years later that I would listen to television jingles and then try to play them on the organ!

Once we settled in our permanent home, my parents brought home a piano and I began working first with Robert Warnick, a local music teacher in the schools. He taught scales and chords. Then, Midge Bishop took me through John Thompson Grade 3, but then had to move away. Finally, I studied under Victoria Hope, lasting 13 years until I went on to college. She taught me the fine art of piano by continually challenging me to approach each piece as an artwork. She had me use the music to paint the picture. Naturally, the element of the soul came through as I put color to music.

My Experience

Throughout my elementary through high school days, I immersed myself in band, choir and drama. I played piano at church starting very young. I then began trombone in the band during 4th grade. Upon entering high school, I joined choir and participated in marching band, concert band, pep band and jazz band. During those years, I picked up the rest of the brass instruments as needed by my band director. In choir, I excelled both in voice and on piano through accompaniment. Later in high school, I joined up with the drama department where we ultimately had the opportunity to write our own musical. By the time I entered college, I had mastered all the brass instruments, piano and snare drum.

During college, I participated in the marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band, pep band, trombone choir, several pit orchestras, and the symphony orchestra. I also participated in the choir.

Since that time, I have mastered the woodwinds, organ, drum set guitar and bass guitar and a little violin. I have over 25 years experience teaching lessons. They occurred off and on throughout my younger days.

Ages Taught

5 through 114 (I haven't seen anyone older, have you?) I believe it is a good idea that a child can read the written word. Reading music occurs in similar ways.

*** Lesson Details ***
I ask lots of questions so I can get to know you better. This is also an opportunity for you ask questions of me. At the beginning, I encourage parents to attend so they can see what these lessons entail. I give you assignments to work with and then you play them for me to receive praise and constructive suggestions. I also try to challenge my students to move beyond the normal curriculum to play other things that interest them.

Depending on the instrument and the experience you have helps me determine what curriculum I want to use. Again, I cater my lessons to the needs you have and by how you like to learn!

After 3 to 6 mos, I hope you have a good working knowledge of how music works and are now moving into intermediate level work. However, each student is different and work a different speeds. My main goal is for you to feel successful whenever you leave my studio!

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

Thomas is a great piano teacher who is incredibly professional, patient and helpful. He is fantastic at noticing deficiencies in your playing and is able to get you to fix them without ever being overbearing or too harsh. He's incredibly patient, knowledgeable and incredibly flexible in his schedule. There were times when I had to change my lesson times and he always made sure to find time for us to get our lesson in. Thomas offers the best lessons for the best price! Whether you're a casual player or looking to help improve your chops, Thomas should be your first choice.

I've just picked up flute after (literally) 50 years and been taking lessons with Thomas for several months. Lessons are enjoyable, and Thomas has taken great pains to gear them toward my goals for learning. Every lesson includes technique, musicality, and theory, with the theory taught through practical application rather than just as an abstraction. He also gives me guidance on how to practice, which was one of my key goals for taking lessons. I was concerned about whether I could find someone who understood how to teach adults - and am very pleased that I succeeded!

There is nothing like the crisp, clear, beautiful tone of the clarinet. I have a great appreciation for the beauty of this instrument.
Mozart himself had a great love for it too, as he was once quoted in a letter to say: "“Never,” wrote Mozart to Stadler, “would I have thought that a clarinet could be capable of imitating the human voice as deceptively as it is imitated by you. Truly your instrument has so soft and lovely a tone that nobody with a heart could resist it.”
Why not learn the clarinet? It is truly a gift to this Earth!

I emphasize teaching proper technique, the ability to express oneself through music and having the utmost fun, enjoyable experience while playing it.

Hi! My name is Ashley and I'm a recent both music and writing graduate of William Paterson University.

I am a passionate multi-instrumentalist.

Do you want to learn how to play your instrument and make up your own music too one day?

If you'd like to try out a teacher who truly loves what they do, I may be right selection. My primary instrument is piano, though I play several others such as flute, clarinet, guitar and violin. I am most proficient on piano, flute, clarinet and guitar so I feel more comfortable teaching these instruments in order to give students the best possible musical foundation. All students are welcome to learn from me, and I have a soft spot and understanding for special needs students.

Music has been in my life since I was a young child, as my grandfather who was proficient on both organ and clarinet
, taught me how to read music and play keyboard. Music is something that can never escape my life! I practice my instruments on a daily basis and avidly compose my own music as well. Besides being involved with piano at school, I was a member of the William Paterson Symphony Orchestra where I played second violin, as well as a member of the school's flute ensemble. My goal is to have a career in which I can instill within my students the same love, endearment and appreciation for music that has grown with me over the years.

I am someone who truly has a passionate love for music, as it is what my whole life is about and brings me immense happiness on a daily basis. I am not just a robotic teacher who is providing lessons as a financial opportunity, but someone who honestly cares about the growth of a student's musical ability and love for music itself.

A huge part of music is not just learning how to play the notes correctly, but to come to understand the amazement that can be experienced from the act of playing an instrument. Paul has been a tremendous instructor for me and my journey on learning acoustic guitar. During lessons he has also taught me music theory and explained it simply, and through that I feel like the guitar and music in general has been opened up to me and I now see music more clearly. Paul is an amazing teacher and mentor. Today we tackled harmonies while recording and it was so special to me. Paul is dedicated to his craft and his students. He prepares for each lesson, whether vocal or piano, and pushes me further along while reinforcing what we learned previously. Michael A Tate graduated from the prestigious Music Education Program and Psychology Program at Ithaca College in 2012. Ithaca gave him the incredible opportunity to hone in on his musicianship and compositional skills. He was also able to discover a new medium of composition, film composition. Tate immediately fell in love with the art of writing music for film and was able to make his first musical debut on a film directed by Mike Blaney. Tate is currently finishing as a music teacher Brooklyn Scholars Charter School (BSCS) and Music Content Leader for National Heritage Academies (NHA) New York Branch. In the fall Tate will be returning to school to study the psychological benefits of music education for children
and adolescents, while teaching private lessons.

Within the first few lessons, you'll be able to play a few folk songs and as time goes on you'll be able to treble clef fluently. I specialize in classical music, typically use traditional band method books, and have the following tools available for your lessons: metronome, and laptop. Robin was early to our first lesson. She worked with my son easily, he felt comfortable with her. She helped him with his fingering and gave tips for the difficult notes. We look forward to working with her for the next month.

Don't trust Robin as your kids teacjher!

When we stumbled upon her - we read her reviews and ended up in requesting a session with Robin. I gave a schedule and Robin agreed to that. I was very specific in setting the expectation with take lessons that i am looking to utilize summer vacations as much as possible. Robin takes the first lesson (which was an ice breaker for my 6 year old daughter, as first lesson cannot be more than that). But as soon as the lesson was over, Robin sends the initiation that she is out for 2 weeks. Not only that, the very next class she just abruptly cancels the session. She very well knew that how keen we were for her to cover up as much ground as possible. TO explain a 6 year old such a behavior is not easy. It's negative attitude from Robin and had to somehow makeup something for my daughter. We ended up canceling all her sessions. Robin did not even feel necessary to call and schedule in such a way that its a progress for my daughter. I wrote 2-3 emails and we called 3 times. She did not respond to any of our calls. I you are looking for your child - i would not recommend Robin to be trusted. Just keep away from her.

This was my first clarinet lesson for ten years, and I couldn't have asked for a better person to accompany me. Elia was friendly, enthusiastic, and quick to figure out what I need and understand what I want to achieve. I look forward to having a lot of fun rediscovering the clarinet in our subsequent lessons.
